    ○ Introduction to the work
After his "Till Eulenspiegel," Richard Strauss drew inspiration from literary models a few more times: in 1896, he completed "Also sprach Zarathustra," probably the first tone poem based on a work of philosophy. With "Don Quixote" (1897), he again took on a figure from the narrative world literature. Strauss then followed a more general poetic idea: the notion of the hero - the free man caught up in the struggles of existence, who must confront hostility, bring his works into the world, complete himself. The work bears clear autobiographical traits - demonstrable in the second half, in which themes from other tone poems by Strauss are echoed. The "Heldenleben" is the tonal balance of the artist's own fate, which an admirer of Strauss, the French writer Romain Rolland, compared to the imaginary hero of Beethoven's "Eroica": "The old, revolutionary features have disappeared, and like the outer world, the hero's enemies [...] occupy a large space [...]. There is further in the 'Heldenleben' a scourging contempt, an evil laughter, such as we never find in Beethoven. Little goodness." The hero reveals himself in the powerfully sweeping E-flat major theme; in the counterpart, "Des Helden Gefährtin," (the hero's companion) Strauss's wife Pauline Strauss-de Ahna is meant - in the form of the soulful solo violin, which unites with the hero in a duet. Beforehand, however, "Des Helden Widersacher" (the hero's adversaries) appear like a caricature: know-it-all gentlemen of criticism with pointed, unattractive, "buzzing" (according to the score) contributions that displace the hero's theme in the bass. The "flight from the world" becomes a spiritual exaltation - represented with a quotation from "Also sprach Zarathustra".

Einfach wundervoll!

Admittedly, some parts of this are played a little faster than we may normally hear, but the conductor appears to be on a weight-loss program as he expends a huge amount of energy in obtaining the small increase in some of the tempi. However, no complaint, as he achieves an excellent performance (I always feel for the orchestra leader.while watching a performance of Heldenleben, as he or she needs to be able to play at a solo recital standard with some of the interludes). This is glorious music, one can wallow in portions of it, and I find myself enjoying it a great deal. I've only discovered the WDR orchestra recently - is it a recent addition to UA-cam? Whatever, I'm impressed with the standard of their videos. Thank you, except for one complaint:- why must the audience reaction get severely curtailed-, and not only with this release? It's enjoyable to hear that reaction, it's almost a part of the performance.

@@WDRKlassik Thank you - and greetings from Melbourne, Australie. I don't know how I've missed your channel up to now, but it's been my loss. This makes two German orchestras that I like and place ahead of the Berlin ensemble. That group, of course, is very good, but has a polish that veers toward being plastic or manufactured, a problem not found here -- just good, responsive and disciplined musicianship.
