Thank you! You’re the 1st of MANY sweet potato videos to clarify they can’t be grown like whites - instead they only tell how to start slips either in water or soil - which kept me asking “Can they grow from the sweet potato itself or a chunk of sweet potato deep down in the pot... now I know they cannot.👍🏻 Thanks again.
Hello from Tampa, I'm just beginning to garden. I put some organic potatoes in a couple pots last June. I'm trying Seminole Pumpkins and Everglades Tomatoes next. Wish me luck! 🎃☃
Should the slips be covered with shade cloth? I planted three this morning and thoroughly watered them and they appeared quite wilted around 1. I did add some shade cloth and another good watering; two out of three look pretty good. One is questionable.
@@MD-bp8vb that’s not really necessary. Mine always look really rough the first couple days I’ve put them in. Just baby them really well for a couple more days and then they should bounce back.
Great video. We just harvested our first sweet potato try and not so good 3 little potatoes and many roots that look like green beans, lol. I live in south Florida, Broward County, I planted my slips on 4-15-24 until 8-30-24. They got full sun 9-2 and lots of water in ground 4x4 size, however iguanas ate all the leaves x2 events. So I think trimming the vines is probably not a good idea, also do you think I should leave in ground longer?
Oh man that’s disappointing. They should have had more than that but it could be from the loss of leaves if the iguanas took a lot. The plant might have spent more energy on replacing the leaves rather than growing the roots.
I'm at the very south of Hillsborough county and have been binging your channel in hopes of curing my black thumb. I just ordered one of the steel beds off of Amazon that you recommend and I'm planning to give sweet potatoes a go. Do you use one entire bed for the sweet potatoes or are you able to plant anything else in the same bed?
You can definitely plant other things with the sweet potatoes. Aim for a taller plant that can hover above the sweet potato leaves. I grew a to of zinnias and beans with my sweet potatoes last year
Bummer. How long did you have them in the ground? I started planting mine late April till end of May. I did the same at my moms house but hers didn’t produce any. It was crazy
Thank you again for your wisdom. I am super excited to try this. One question. Does 1 slip produce 1 sweet potato... Or can one slip produce many? Thanks again :) Bonus question I am in zone 9 Florida... can I buy slips now and begin? with a harvest later this year? Thank you.
It's the end of May here in West Pasco County, Florida on the Pinellas line. Is it too late to go to Publix and get my organic sweet potato to start my slips?
Great video - tons of useful information. Have you grown any of the white-flesh sweet potatoes? I've heard that they're quite good substitutes for gardening disadvantages like ours. I have never seen one. Thank you for sharing your work.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I have seen those potatoes but haven’t tried growing them yet. I usually grow the traditional orange and the Japanese purple. I suspect they would do well here since so many other varieties do. I might give them a shot next summer.
Thanks so much! More than likely they should. I imagine if you planted them in September, they were pretty big. Don’t trim them or anything. Just leave them be. They will either recover or resprout. If they regrow and then we get another hit like this week you may have a smaller yield or loss. Fingers crossed 🤞
I start creating my slips in February. It can take 4-6 weeks for them to be big enough. Then I immediately plant them which ends up starting in April and I keep planting till end of May or whenever the potatoes stop making slips.
Thank you so much. I have the slips and I'm waiting a couple of more days to plant them but I will use 10gal grow bags. How many slips I can fit there?
@@burself8105 probably 2 for each bag would be good. The potatoes get pretty big the longer you leave them so I like to give them extra space. If you have a shorter window to grow, then do 3 and you will just have smaller potatoes but more of them.
Thank you!

Excited to harvest and put my vines back in the bed for another round!! Thank for the great idea!
Good luck! 💚

Awesome information. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I live in central Florida and now have my slips ready to plant. So excited!
Yay! That is exciting 🎉

Mine came out small on the gulf northern side of Florida.

One slip should make about 4-6 potatoes and you can still start them now to get a harvest before Christmas

No, it’s not too late. You may not have sweet potatoes by Thanksgiving but you should have some in time for Christmas.

Whole Foods Market carries organic white sweet potatoes.
Thanks I’ll check it out
Great video Petrina, Thank you so much for this wonderful info. I'm loving your videos.

Planted mine in Sept. they froze last night. Wonder if they will respout and continue on? What say you?? Love the channel

When would you recommend planting slips for Hernando county area? Ty

How far apart you plant your slips?
I like to give them 1 square foot each. Gives them plenty of room to grow big
