Im a mexican rapper and composer. im glad to find this kind of channel, i feel im gonna need it sometime...
I believe out of BMI and ASCAP, only BMI collects publishing for you if you dont have a publishing entity. With ASCAP, you need to register as a vanity pub entity in order to collect the publishing side. Also, mechanical royalties are paid out to the composition owners, not the master owners. This is not collected by your PRO though, its collected through other entities such as the MLC. It's all overly complicated and confusing.

Any tips for other countries that don't have a centralized copyright office like the US to protect your copyright?

What about those of us that are song writers but we are using AI to generate the vocals and or instruments? I wrote my own lyrics, I am doing all the video edits etc, but I can't sing or play an instrument. What can those of us that fall into that category do for publishing?
I can't wait to become one of your clients.

🎉❤
hey! Is it normal to sell an exclusive vocal/song for £500 and keep 50% of the publishing? that's what I'm doing and I think it's reasonable. it protects me as a writer, and an upfront fee feels normal considering they own 100% of the master. but i'm having people go off at me saying "wow you want people to pay 500 pounds AND you want 50% of the royalties?", and i'm fighting for myself explaining the difference in royalties and how i wouldn't make any of the streaming income... but they haven't replied and now i'm second guessing myself. !?!
for reference, i've over 240k monthly listeners and have been a writer for over a decade. have had lots of releases on dance labels which is in line with the toplines i'm selling. only saying this to justify the upfront fee i guess! i'm not necessarily a beginner. ahhhh
So if as a rapper I’m buying/ leasing the beats and writing and recording all of the lyrics.. do I own the rights to all the publishing and the masters?
Great question. I have a ton of videos on publishing if you can go take a look. I believe there are playlists for them? Lots of knowledge!!
