I love how the director turned the story of Vanessa finally knowing Mona is her mother and watching with pride with her little face lit up as she was thinking "That's my mother". Good job Minnie Driver and great acting Hallie Kate Eisenberg.
But how could Vanessa be thinking "that's my mother" during Mona's song, when Mona didn't reveal the fact that she was Vanessa's mother until after she had been chosen as the winner.
If you’ve seen the movie (it’s awful), it’s a way of trying to make it believable that she would win: the other contestants do traditional “talents” like ventriloquism and baton twirling. This was in a totally different league: sensual, stunning.
I just heard @TaylorSwift version of this song and loved her version which instantly brought me to my most favorite ever Minnie Driver version of this song.
My boyfriend unwillingly watched this movie with me and he said, "Singing a song about a one night stand is not very Miss America" LOL!!! Couldn't stop laughing.
Lol! I don't think it's about a one-night stand. I think it's about 1 of two things: 1. The lover is fickle and keeps changing their mind, so the singer wants to finally know what's up, or 2. The singer has been hurt many times by lovers who said they loved her and then suddenly left when the relationship didn't suit them. Because of that history, she wants to know, before getting too invested, if the current lover is someone who plans to stay around. I don't think there would be so much talk of love if it were a one-night stand.
Minnie Driver's character had obsessed about winning this pageant since she was a kid, but was never the most beautiful or talented girl up there (by far). So, yes, in the context of the story, the singing and dancing aren't supposed to be great. It's her emotion that's supposed to come through and grab you. And omg I can't believe I just thought about that so deeply. (I watched this movie a LOT a long time ago... LOL)
@Erin Oleno That is interesting, because I saw it differently. The other contestants did very corny talents. This was totally different. It was sensual and emotional. I noticed as well that in the evening gown competition, her gown is a much more flattering cut than the others. I thought both were designed to make it more believable that she kept advancing, because as you said, she was always an underdog.
I love Minnie Driver. Great actress and singer.
If you watched the movie and understood the meaning of the movie and the storyline, you wouldn’t be asking if the dancing is supposed to be bad 🤣
Ive watched this movie more than 20 times. Love the whole movie. Great ending. ❤

When they had a conversation right before this scene it was pretty obvious that she was her mom

It could potentially be a one night stand or not since she's singing about the night before
I want to see her as a native singing
I love her song Invisible Girl!
