For Víctor Erice, in authoritarian post-war Spain cinema was “a country not marked on the map”, with no customs or passports, where he could travel to meet citizens of the whole world and discover just how much they had in common, thanks to the universal language of images. In this 2014 conversation, held when he was in Locarno to receive the Pardo alla carriera, the great Spanish director speaks of his filmmaking practice as an existential experience, one that allows him to investigate the world and communicate his findings to anyone, anywhere.
