The name „Espenæs“ rightfully makes a lot of people swoon: Liv Kristine and her sister Carmen Elise were a vital part of a magnitude of gothic / symphonic / folk metal milestones - but so far a supergroup involving both sisters sharing microphone duties was only the stuff only dreams were made of. December 14, 2017 gave fans the ultimate pre-Christmas surprise -Midnattsol added a second vocalist, Liv Kristine.
Their fourth album The Aftermath profits massively from the addition of another voice; the fragile track ‘Vem can segla‘ oozes pure magic and depth, whereas the reendition of the traditional Swedish ballad ‘Herr Mannelig‘ revels in somber glory and folkloristic air. Especially in comparison to its predecessor The Metamorphosis Melody (2011), The Aftermath relies much more heavily on folk influences lending atmospheric density to the melancholic symphonic metal compositions. A sumptuous and sensual affair and a shimmering highlight in the discography of this German / Norwegian team!

I own all Midnattsol albums, but this one. Been a fan of Liv Kristine since Theater of Tragedy and Leaves Eyes. I originally bought the first Midnattsol because of Carmen Elise being Liv's sister. Unlike some people I immediately liked Carmen's Vocals, and I liked the Nordic folk elements. I think Carmen and Liv sound great together, but I am disappointed that Birgit is no longer in the band, guess they can't have 3 blonde females in the same band. Also from what I've heard the production isn't up to par . Hopefully the physical product will sound better than the online. It's been a few years now since the release, but oddly enough I just found out yesterday that there was a Midnattsol album that I failed to buy . I went to a few Record stores, and never saw a copy, or I definitely would have already owned it

I'm going to give my critique on this - of course some will like it, some will hate it. I am a big fan of Liv Kristine from her days in Theater of Tragedy and Leaves Eyes. I have also been a big fan of Midnattsol, well their last 2 albums. They replaced most of their musicians from the previous albums. I was looking forward to hearing the two sisters sing together (I had often pictured how previous Midnattsol songs would sound with Liv singing them, maybe I will get that luxury live some day). I was a little disappointed in the sound of this song though. I know it is a cover so I will save my judgement until I hear an original song. I still plan on buying this CD when it comes out. I am just hoping that their originals are better than this cover.
Yeah, whats up with that? Ive been listening to some of the tracks with Liv (she is my queen!) but the music production for the tracks are crap. What gives, they are on Napalm Records yet the tracks are sounding like demos.

I met Liv in Tacoma, WA, USA at El Corazon; pretty sure I was the only one there to see Leave's Eyes (don't care for Hatebreed). Not only does Liv have a BEAUTIFUL voice, she's also the most sweetest and sincere people I've ever met! Just talking with you was a highlight of my younger years and inspired me to discover more band of your genre! Thank you Liv for giving this nerdy metalhead a hug; it's a story I tell to this day!

Ganz anders sieht das mit dem ... ich nenne es mal vorsichtig „growlen“ aus... also das passt weder in dieses harmonisch melodische, noch hört es sich gut an... eher wie ein rülpsen oder so...
Ein Like gibt es trotzdem, da ich das Lied an sich sehr gern mag, über das „rülpsen“ hinweg sehen kann und trotz InExtremo, dieses Lied zumindest eine guter 2. Platz ist! (in MEINER Liste)

@@oskarmatyszkowicz2597 So i stumbled across this video and saw your comment, its been one year. But yes, I can confirm that I can hear their Norwegian accent when singing and me being a Swedish speaker by tongue.

@@iloveyoushima Yes, especially their "bokmål" accent, however it does happen that an accent can be too thick, but I even have trouble understanding other Swedish dialects if its too heavy, maybe not 1 on 1 conversations but like if we are in a crowded space with lots of other noise such as a restaurant.

Garmarna has done this song and she's done it better. Idk, metal doesn't suit that song well. Garmarna made it more perfect.

The singers are norwegian, but they sing in swedish here. Norwegian is my native language
Lyrics is original, old swedish. ( i specially asked to swedish people, couse i don't understand swedish) In middle age there wasn't difference between dansk, swensk and norsk. Now there is 2 norwegian languages - bukmoll that close to dansk and swenska language and nunorsk that's old language that they speaks in countrylands, this is close to icelandic or fororskt (for example, see norsk band Tyr)

I apologize. I have read up on the subject now and it's clear I was in error. But, having said that, the swedish text is medieval and sung with a clear norwegian accent to boot so perhaps it was not so strange that I mistook it for Norwegian. My bad.
So, maybe. But main word is "medieval' , I think, in the middle age there wasn't difference between these north languages. As i know, for example, in 13 century, Dansk was a language of international relation, as the English now. Because they (vikings) have got theyr expansion to all motherf...damned Europe, since Espania to Volga region. For example, now there is danish roots in english language and in russian language.
Interesting, I prefer garmarna's version because it feels more authentic without instruments but it's definitely a great cover. I also dig the end solo

It's not a drummer, It is a Virtual Instrument.
I agree. If not the whole kit at least the bass drum is sampled. I even think I recognise the sample from the Drumkit From Hell library by Toontrack which is a expansion for their drum plugins. That might be the reason why the kit is not much upfront in this mix. That's neither good or bad but I think I can hear the virtual component which makes it sound very artificial in my opinion.

I like this version, but there is another one which kicks ass pretty much. The version from the German Band In Extremo is also a force to be reckoned with.
