  • Jonathan shares about the challenge of being self-critical as a creative person. Whatever we create, we can often struggle with feeling not good enough or that our work isn't as good as it could be. But there is freedom to be found when we switch off that voice and lean into the joy of creating.

    Me tries this.
    Lifts pen off paper.
Realizes my pen has no ink 😑

I did this exercise for a community college drawing class years ago, and I remember how seemingly silly yet freeing it felt to me. Not to mention it also forces you to improve your attentiveness and observation skills as you create. Love what you had to say here! I'll have to pick up that exercise again.

Such great advice. I find for me, letting the critic in after a project is finished, and it's too late to change it, is a good way to do things, as the critic of the work helps shape future projects but doesn't get in the way of current projects.

I loved this! I was just talking about this a couple of days ago with other artists. I love that exercise where you don't look at what you're drawing until after it is done. I've experienced the same thing when learning how to draw these characters of an ancient Filipino writing system. It was fulfilling to see it all come to the paper and even tho it wasn't perfect, I knew it was progress and it meant something. To be free in your creativity really means to silence that inner critic inside of you.

This is honestly a big part of what God has been talking to me about throughout my music journey so far, from my very first release God made it very clear that it needed to be submitted before I thought It was ready, and that has continued for this first year, and it has been so freeing and encouraging to know that even in this raw, messy and unfinished state, God can still pick up the pieces and use it to speak to people. To reveal what He needs people to hear at the exact time needed because God's timing is perfect.

This is amazing! Wow, thank you so much!
Personally I've been trying to draw lately and I have these ideas of what I want to do but when I try to draw those ideas it just doesn't come off AS GOOD as I plan on my mind and I just feel like WHY? And feel immediately discouraged. It's just like you guys said: to keep practicing and not judge what we're doing and just ENJOY the process. That's something I miss. God bless!

Back at this as a reminder to trust God in the journey of my creativity and silence the inner critic that says "if it’s not perfect, don’t start"❤

Loved this video! Especially during the primary ideation process, silencing the critic is so important so you just get out as many ideas as possible. Choose the best ones later.
Wondering what you guys mainly use your ipads for? J.O. I know you already use a macbook for music making. Just got one myself so going to try out this drawing technique!

I guess the perfection lies in the process, in the mending, twitching and adjusting, not in the end product. Funny enough, I've been allowing this inner critic to push me towards the quality end product but forgetting how the content, how the emotion and effort made my previous work all the more perfect. Thanks Jonathan & Shibata!
