Why Apple stock is an 'opportunity,' and Boeing is a 'trap': Main Street Research's CIO

  • In the latest segment of Yahoo Finance's "Good Buy or Goodbye," Main Street Research CIO James Demmert joins the Live Show to analyze why investors should consider Apple (AAPL) a buy and steer clear of Boeing (BA).
Demmert suggests investors consider Apple stock as a potential buy. He notes that Apple's share price has declined from its highs, stating "it's getting no love from Wall Street," creating "an opportunity" for investors. He also highlights Apple's investments in artificial intelligence (AI) technology for its iPhones, which he believes is a strategic "refocus" will drive future stock appreciation.
On the other hand, Demmert advises investors to avoid Boeing stock. He cites the company's persistent production issues, safety incidents, and manufacturing setbacks, saying Boeing has severely undermined the "decades [it takes] to build a good reputation." He also mentions that the valuation has declined significantly, and the company continues to "lose money."

My advice to new investors: Buy good companies stocks and hold them as long as they are good companies. Just do this and ignore the forecasts and market views which are at best entertaining but completely useless.

Absolutely, I've been exploring the world of stock investing recently. There's so much information out there, and it can be overwhelming. I'm thinking about tech stocks, given their historical performance, but I'm not sure where to start. Any advice?

I've been investing in stocks for a while now, and it's been a significant part of my retirement portfolio. Diversification is key. I've had success with a mix of growth stocks and dividend-paying stocks. However, staying informed and regularly reviewing your portfolio is crucial. Have you considered consulting a financial advisor to help guide your stock investment strategy?

Great video, I've been interested in investing ever since I came across articles of people making up to $150,000 and more in this period, thanks for the video but is it really possible for a retail investor to achieve this in months?

Starting early is simply the best way of getting ahead to build wealth , investing remains a priority. I learnt from my last year's experience , I am able to build a suitable life beause I invested early ahead this time.

Apple has not really invented a whole lot. It is more the latter decade with the m-chips that they actually invented something.
But they are the ultimate masters in implementation and marketing. They take existing tech, refine it, and implement it in (unfortunately) proprietary ways. Combine this with excellent marketing where you buy a lifestyle, not tech and the sheep..., I mean loyal customers, will buy it and pay whatever price to get into it.
That is their real strength - ultimate customer loyalty.

Apple drops because in the current economic environment, people are holding up to their phones longer and opt for cheaper models. Ironically, iPhone users are more likely to do so since iPhone can stay better for longer than Android ones.

I learned that the stock market was a rich man's game (yes, grandparents lost it all back then and preached that forever) but I've been around long enough to really taste how great it can be. To be profitable, with inflation at 6.1% These are surely desperate times, but in my opinion, there is no market condition that a good financial advisor cannot navigate, especially those that have existed since the crisis of 2008 and before.

Regardless of whether you're a wise person, it's best to consult a professional advisor right away. As a business owner in the service industry as well as an eBay reseller of all product categories, I can attest to the fact that we are in a severe recession and that everyone is running out of money.

The first to market is the most profitable. First touch screen phone, first ev car maker, first company to AI hardware. So unless Apple can reinvent AI they are not doing crap. After Steve Jobs passed away what was the most innovative thing they have brought to market?

So random brokerage guy talks their OWN BOOK. On stocks that BOTH have valuation risks -- but claims the opposite about them. Cluelessly, and making a random prediction about Apple sans evidence.
    Got it.
If Boeing were trading over $500 on short term good news, he'd be recommending it....

Yeah. He comes across as sleazy.
The problem is that Boeing is not being regulated. It has one of the greatest monopolies on the planet. The company won't change until the criminal probe makes a decision on what should happen with the company. Nobody is going to get rid of it, but it needs to be cleaned out and go back to the way it was before the McDonnell Douglas merger, as a company designed by enginers, instead of being a feast for top shareholders who are gorging it out.

I'm ok with Apple Stock eating sh!t for awhile. They've been overcharging people while making things less convenient (ie: dongles. 5gb icloud. the "cut" they take from the exclusive App store). convenience and innovation left this company with Steve Jobs. It's actually sad to see how greed is ruining them.
