Hopefully you will find native tobacco planters on the west coast. Also, if the colonist is working on a prime resource, the chance of becoming master planter is greater, even more so after you plow the square. You can build a colony close to the prime tobacco (even though it is very far inland) - for maximum chance of learning the skill, and also to allow New Amsterdam to start using the education facility.

I've never had much luck with the auto-learning of the planting trades - but of course I often interrupt that process with education, being impatient. I did get my tobacco planter in the end, though.

There is another time factor aswell .. if you fail to declare independence later on past a specific date not long after 1777 and you get a bonus if you achieve or declare before 1700 too i believe. One of my favorite games.

+100/50/25% bonus for being the first/second/third to declare independence, and another bonus if it is declared before 1780. Hands down my favorite DOS game. :))

I'm aware of those time factors, but on higher difficulty settings the first hurdle tends to be the AIs gaining their independence for free. Granted, that could be stalled with massive warfare to deny them to ever have more than 40 colonists, but it'll spread your forces very thin when you start your own war of independence.
I'm still a bit undecided whether to worry about score - I have plenty of room to expand, especially if I decide to battle the natives. I won't have time for that if I'm to beat the AIs to independence, though. Colonies take a while to build up, after all.
