Craig, you make me so envious. I wish i wasn't 74. disabled and still had a couple of acres or even 1. I love cuttings, but now i only do flowers. Lovr your videos & still learning. Thanks.
Heck Gheeze, No wonder I have been having a very hard time getting the cuttings I have taken to root out. I have been using the brown wood and discarding the real nice soft green wood 🤦🤦🤷 Thank you for sharing your advice and knowledge again! I was actually going to go back and rewatch your older videos to figure out what I have been doing wrong. 🌱🌱🌱 Side note, I spent the morning planting another arborvitae purchased at the big box store 1/2 off. 😁👍 Yep, take good care of your plants and they will be good to you. 🌱💚 Can't wait to give it another try. I have all my supplies ready to go 👍😎🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
Great video! We start softwood cuttings up further north in a few weeks. Hope to have a banner year. The exponential factor is what makes it work. With the room you have now I can see many more mother plants growing of different varieties. Love your misting set up! Inspiring! Have to get that on the to do list. 👍🌲🙏🏼👍🌲🙏🏼
Hi my friend I am new to your channel and you put up some great contact. Thanks for sharing and such a great chit chat today and some great information. Hugs and kisses from grandma, Sandy, and Debbie.
Arborvitae won't grow here but Junipers the Italian one does well here .Last year after watching your video how to propagate green giants I picked up two junipers that was on sale and made 78 cutting there doing great. I planted the mother plants.
Absolutely! No reason to not do that... I just planted these few arbs for the express purpose of taking hundreds of cuttings multiple times a year. But, I actually have many others that I plan to do just as you described.
@@savvydirtfarmer thank you. Just wondered if there was a way to cut down on water if no drain holes and more like standing water like some propagate in a glass of water. Thanks keep up the great job.
Can I put those cuttings in perlite or vermiculite and get the same results as sand and pine bark mulch thank you in advance greetings, Central Florida
Any tree with a leader needs to be left intact. If it's cut, it will branch from that point, and multiple leaders will then form, making a wonky looking tree. For my purposes of making cuttings, I want these parent plants to be thick, bushy, and loaded with future cuttings, so the leader is a non-issue in this application. But normally, leave it alone.
I took about 40 cuttings from a green giant late winter and stuck them in sand. I used a kitty litter box with holes in the bottom. Most look like they’re still alive. When is the best time to check for roots and repotting?
I would leave them alone until they are winter dormant. Give them a gentle tug. If they stay put, they are rooting. If they slip out easily, they need more time. But since you're going to leave them alone til winter, it really doesn't matter.
That's a 60% shade folded in half. Pretty heavy shade. I'm still trying to dial this new system in... totally depends on your water flow. Right now I'm running it for 10 seconds every 20 minutes. That still seems too wet though so I'm trying to work that out. I used to do it 7 seconds every 10 minutes on my old setup. This one is just different.
@@cyndismith4939 Not in the summer sun I would say try on north side of bldg. Out of sun with a small type green house type high humidity. Glass window over a box.
What does it do if you cut the leader Off? Will it continue to grow, or will it like stop growing at that point? Or Will it always have a flat top like what will happen if you do?
Typically, people are planting these as screening trees, and they want a tall, straight, uniform look. If you cut the main leader, it's going to branch from that point and give the trees multiple leaders and turn the tree more bushy. It will continue growing very well, it just won't look like a tree.
@@savvydirtfarmer Okay, so it would not economically viable to put these into hydroponics. You have inspired me in general, though. I have about an acre and I'm going to find a few tree shrub varietals I can babysit over the winter.
With the cuttings, when do you expect to be able to sell the average ones that grow well - how many months down the road? Ball park price on what they would retail for when you do sell them (price range)? I love your UA-cam videos, please keep it up.
The cuttings, if rooted well, would sell for about $1.50 this winter. Then before Spring warm up, they could be potted and grown out for the Summer, and by fall, they'd be close to filling out a trade gallon pot for $8. In another year, potted up to 3 gallon for $19.
Any kind of masonry or all purpose sand. Just don't buy sand that's real fine, like flour. Coarse, rough sand is what you need. I got mine at Home Depot or Lowes
@@stevenbasham No. Fertilizer is not needed to root plants. Once they're rooted, apply fertilizer... there are a million fertilizers that would work fine, that's just the one I use for pretty much everything.

Arborvitae won't grow here but Junipers the Italian one does well here .Last year after watching your video how to propagate green giants I picked up two junipers that was on sale and made 78 cutting there doing great. I planted the mother plants.
Is it possible to just carefully remove the new, green growth from the arborvitae and leave the parent plant only pruned?

Do you have a video on hydrangea propagation? Your videos are so helpful and you make it look so easy.
Several… a quick search through my channel will get you there

One question on the white container. Do you have drainage holes in the bottom or no?

Should be fine
I've always heard "don't cut the leader", but what is the result of cutting the leader? Does it basically stop the plant from growing vertically?
Any tree with a leader needs to be left intact. If it's cut, it will branch from that point, and multiple leaders will then form, making a wonky looking tree. For my purposes of making cuttings, I want these parent plants to be thick, bushy, and loaded with future cuttings, so the leader is a non-issue in this application. But normally, leave it alone.

Are these cuttings then two years away from being $7 retail plants? Or will they be ready in one year? Really enjoy and appreciate all you do!
Propagate this year, grow out next year. Sell by end of next year and/or beginning of the next. 1.5 - 2 years, generally.
Knocking out my cryptomeria’s now and then going to hack into mine as well! Great stuff! 👊🏼
How long does it take to find roots on your cuttings. If you do not have a mist system how often do you water.
About 4 weeks, varies by plant. No mist? Put cuttings in full shade and water at least twice a day.
@@savvydirtfarmer Thank you. We are trying to propagate green giants.
What do you do with the cuttings during winter. Will they freeze?
They stay outside all winter. They freeze, flood, thaw, snow... whatever.

Only in winter... TBD if we have any this coming winter.
