  • We are thrilled to release our latest URSA Exclusive with Production Sound Mixer Amanda Beggs CAS.
    Amanda has been a Sound Mixer in Los Angeles for over a decade. Since moving to California, Beggs became one of the youngest women to earn membership in the prestigious Cinema Audio Society, and has worked on numerous projects with powerhouse indie directors like Greta Gerwig, Gia Coppola, and Mike Mills. Amanda has also mixed second unit work on blockbuster films like Star Trek Beyond, 10 Cloverfield Lane & Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
    We comb through her beast of an audio kit to find out how she captures clean, beautiful sound anywhere the job takes her.
    If you have any questions about Amanda’s kit, please go ahead and drop them in the comments. Be sure to hit subscribe so you can stay updated on all of our content.
    In our next video we talk to Amanda about her work on two great films - Lady Bird and 20th Century Women.

      Yeah, agreed. We learned a lot from this particular interview. I have loved doing the sound WHILE interviewing. It just felt like a fun touch that was unique to us, but the more I do it, I realize it's not the best way we can be capturing sound. We run into issues that are hard for me to catch while mixing, talking, and moving around in front of the camera. Thank you for putting up with the little imperfect bits here, and focusing on all the great stuff Amanda has to say! We appreciate you!

      @@KyllandMusic I had one of those moments recording a radio documentary where I just couldn't tell if the sound was any good because I had to juggle many roles at once (interviewing while booming and mixing, walking with my mom). Turned out the limiter saved my behind, lucky enough for me. A humbling experience for me. It's a great touch! Love these videos! :)

    As a DSP chip design EE, I love seeing what creative people do with my designs. This is fantastic. PLDs are in every piece of equipment ms Beggs is using. I know, it may be silly, but it is exciting for me to watch.

      @ronspi 3 роки тому +1

      @@amandabeggs3198 Although I can't mention company names due to NDA with current contracts, Altera (now Intel), Analog Devices, Cypress, Yamaha, and others who used my FPGA, CPLD, and other memory chip designs, were some of the names who used my designs. New designs have larger mBGA chips (check IPC-D-275) for more complex designs with many more features on small boards. This makes the equipment smaller, portable, and lower power consumption devices - which in turn, makes it cooler to handle. Keep creating and pushing the limits. It makes me very happy. If you only knew how all this started. LOL

    25:20 - camera doesn't pay a penny for their gear in general, where us, sound people do. So yeah there is no patience, but it's ridiculous same time. I do love your rigs though. Love colour coding. Follow cart is quite large indeed, but I can't agree more, that it's good to have all you need accessible at all times. Really fun.

    • @christophschultz3500
      @christophschultz3500 3 роки тому

      Have you asked a DP under 30 if they pay for their gear? Or a 1AC? Speaking with 17 years of experience in the camera department here, the real shame is not getting a kit rental fee for standard day rates equivalents. Sound is taking it on the chin the same as other departments.

    • @kappabravomusic2101
      @kappabravomusic2101 3 роки тому +1

      @@christophschultz3500 good on ya. But in reality most of camera crew barely owns anything. Unless it's a union show or a small budget film where DP owns everything. But looking at camera department throwing staff all over the place including very "cheap" cameras, lenses and cracking filters in halves in my 17 years of work taught me that in general they are the ones who actually doesn't really care about any gear is rented for them by production. Of course they'll care about their own gear. It's owned. But rentals nope.

    • @christophschultz3500
      @christophschultz3500 3 роки тому

      @@kappabravomusic2101 Generalizing gets people into arguments though. I work primarily in the non-union / low budget space. I have no idea how any young DP gets started without owning a camera these days. If someone has figured that out they need to tell everyone else about it.

      @kappabravomusic2101 3 роки тому +1

      I am listening on headphones, the dt770 pro from beyer dynamic. Kims voice is perfect, but there seems to be some radio interference or something having to do with the connector of the lavalier, or maybe it does have something to do with distortion. It annoys me to a bit. But I am still eager to learn more about her specific cart and I am already looking forward to the video about the production sound of Lady Bird.

    Just remember when you watch a pirated video, it is these people you are taking money from, the investment that freelancers have to put into their living is insane.. There is easily £100k in that garage, and that is one person in a massive family of people who love their job. Lighting, props, all have similar investment levels, if not more (especially lighting). so next time your complaining about the £15 blu-ray the money pays for these peoples living.

      we agree, and learned a lot from this particular interview. I have loved doing the sound WHILE interviewing, just felt like a fun touch that was unique to us, but the more I do it, I realize it's not the best way we can be capturing sound. Thank you for putting up with the little imperfect bits here, and focusing on all the great stuff Amanda has to say! We appreciate you!
