    Thank you, I have a pair of Advent Mini's from 1988 that a friend gifted me and they have sat in my basement for a decade. I finally connected them to my Marantz 2252B receiver, and within a minute you could tell the woofers needed new surrounds. So your video and a re-foam kit will bring them back to life. So thank you. Not sure what I'll do with them after they are repaired but I just couldn't throw them away.

      Definitely worth fixing and keeping. The Baby Advent is a top rated vintage bookshelf speaker. Checkout this video from Skylabs. ua-cam.com/video/Loa1HUdTj4E/v-deo.html

    Was given Laureates and the foam was completely gone. They have the same 6.5 woofers as the baby, just 2 each. They have the foam replacement kit for all 4. Like you, I didn't replace the dust caps. Great video. Thanks.

    Nice job on the Video. Very thorough. I re-foamed a pair of these before watching and it was pretty much the same process. Very easy to do.....These Baby Advent speakers sound surprisingly loud and clear for their size. A really good sonic balance of Bass and Treble. Work great with lower wattage vintage receivers like the Sherwood 7100 or 7200. Great for a small apartment, bedroom or office.
    Don't understand the 2 thumbs down, but I do know these usually come from people who never attempted to make a helpful video.

    I just refoamed my Advent Legacy speakers. My speakers were almost exactly like the speakers refoamed in this video except larger. I like the way he applied the glue to the foam instead of the speaker cone the way that Simply Speakers does in their video. This video does a good job of showing how to deal with the curling that occurred when I glued the foam to the basket, which the Simply Speakers video does not. If the frame on your speakers is round and they have gaskets over the foam then I highly recommend watching this video before refoaming them.

      John, Thanks for the comments. I refoamed a pair of Advent Legacy speakers about 4 years ago. Those were the ones that I was comparing the Advent Baby II's to at the end of the video. Great sounding speakers!

    In preparing to restore my Baby Advent II's I watched your video a couple of times. Absolutely perfect! The hardest part for me was removing the gasket around the speaker. A little tough. I also went ahead and recapped the crossover and after finishing the project they sound amazing! Thanks again!

    Mine were inspected by LP and tested by EW. More stuffing is not necessarily better. Sometimes it seems like the sound deadening material is just thrown in there hap hazard. It's most likely not. I've played with the deadening on speakers and they usually sound best with the exact amount of insulation installed at the factory, exactly where they put it. Sometimes it will just be laying over a bottom corner.

      The Foam is COMPLEATLY gone on 3 out of 4 woofers, and i can see they are cocked. Dont really want to apply power until the VC can operate in a linear manner. I like the battery trick to check polarity also

    I have a pair of Baby II’s that I got in the late 80’s. I like them a lot so I re-foamed them a while back. I had never re-foamed speakers before but I had heard people talk about it and they seemed to portray it as very doable. I bought the new foams and looked up a YT video like this one (was it this one?) and re-foamed them. The speakers sounded very nice again. Thanks for the video. 👍🏻

    i have a pair of Advent 4002 from 1984/85. They do not function as the woofers foam surrounds have deteriorated. They now sit in a storage shed. They have been replaced with some fine sounding modern Monitor Audio speakers. But even those i will be replacing with a pair of Totem Rainmaker bookshelf or Arros floor standers. I have not decided which. At any rate, I do plan on "resurrecting" the old advents and putting new foam surrounds. One thing i noticed about those old advents is they do not really sound good when called to reproduce the whole audio spectrum. When i hooked up a sub woofer with them they really did shine. The mid range sound by those advents was awesome if they do not have to reproduce the lower bass frequencies.

    • @mguess
      @mguess  7 років тому

      Let me know if you want to sell those old Advents, I'd love to own a pair. I really like my 87 vintage Advent Legacy's. Your speakers should be fairly easy to re-foam and get them singing again.

    Thanks for sharing, i didnt see where you cleaned off the old foam and glue from the outer edge of the cone?

    • @mguess
      @mguess  2 роки тому

      Thanks for commenting. I believe that I started showing the cone cleanup about 10 minutes into the video. As I remember the glue was a bit tough to remove on that pair of speakers. I was able to remove it well enough to get the new foam surround to install properly. The owner of the Baby Advents reports that he is still using the speaker and sounding good.

    Great video. I'm about to do the same thing on an identical pair of Baby IIs. I see that you don't use voice coil shims. Have you ever run into rubbing after a refoam? Should I not bother with shims?

    • @mguess
      @mguess  7 років тому +1

      Hi Steve. When I first started re-foaming speakers about 15 years ago, I used the "shim the voice coil" method. A few years ago I discovered the shim-less method promoted by Simply Speakers and others. I've re-foamed about 5 pairs of speakers using the shim-less method and never had the voice coil rub. Some of the speaker folks on UA-cam claim that you need to use shims but I have had 100% successful results using the shim-less method. Like I said in the video I think it's a good idea to preserve the original voice coil dust cap. Good luck with your project. Great little speakers. The owner of the Baby II's that I worked on in the video mounted them in his garage workshop. He loves the sound.

  • @johnb9187
    @johnb9187 5 років тому +1

    not quite as simple a process as those selling the foam surrounds would lead you to believe. in fact it`s more a 3 hour process for a pair of 6.5" drivers plus dry times.
    a recipe for disaster with that glue`s chemical reaction warping and curling the inner/outer lips of surround during such a delicate procedure where getting voice-coil`s perfectly centered is imperative and professional `looking` results matter. use aleene`s tacky glue or some other water-based adhesive.
