    With the Etchr Slate I think the misunderstanding is that it is advertised as a bag, while in fact it's, functionally, a pochade box. I have and use sometimes, but in a way I would use a pochade box - so rather when I'm expecting to sit/ stand for some time, working on one piece than to urban sketch or nature journal.

      You’re right, that’s a great way to think about it! If I had a car and could take the slate + supplies + tripod it would be fab 😊 but for daily use it’s a bit too much for me!

    Jose, thank you for sharing. I bought too many art supplies of all sort, that I do not use. I am a beginner, do not know how to paint in acrylic or water color. I got no space for all the stuff. On top of everything, I have an anxiety disorder. I have not painted for a year. No more buying art supplies for at least a year. This is like an addiction.

    The Etchr Field Case is most definitely the best and most useful thing they’ve made. The larger bags are kind of awkward and heavy; like the idea of them is amazing but the reality is less so. I totally understand the buyer’s remorse there! 😂

      Yep I use the field case every time I go sketching, it’s perfect! But yeah the slate is just too bulky for me…

    I draw only on the right side pages of any sketchbook to the end, then turn it around so the blank left side pages are on the right, and continue. This way there is never any problem with the binding getting in the way.

    Another nice video! My biggest regret with art supplies is that I just have way too many watercolor paints. I have come to realize that less is more, and now I am a lot more selective in the number of paints I am using and buying. :)

      Thank you! Yes I'm the same, plus too much acrylic, oil and gouache on top of all the watercolours 😂

    I live in my Etchr Field Case and the Art Satchel. They were a large investment, but they go with me EVERYWHERE! I have never owned the Slate. I agree it looked a little small for me.

    I actually prefer a ring bound sketchbook. You can fold it over nicely and it’s so convenient. The binding in my other sketchbooks always gets loose and sometimes breaks.
    I’ve been extremely picky about what I buy so I can’t really think of many other regrets.

    I know what you mean about the rings on the sketchbook being annoying. I prefer the feel of “proper” bound books (also with ring binding, it’s too tempting to just rip out pages I’m not happy with). I love binding my own books to get the size and thickness I want. Maybe you could use the nice paper and make it into a smaller bound sketchbook. (If you’ve not done book binding before, SeaLemon on UA-cam has some good tutorials)

    I almost talked myself into the mini slate but it did seem cumbersome to use. I also thought there was not much Rome for stuff. I still got a hard decision but I think this helped. I actually been looking at the Darsie Beck field easel and think I may like it more. I just don’t know though and they are both pretty expensive. The mini slate would probably be the one if I knew I would use a tripod sometimes.

    Hay Josie,
    Sweet video. I was considering getting the etchr field case but you made some good points about it. I also never put too much thought into it before but once you said it I agree with you that ring bound notebooks suck hard AF. I don't know why I didn't realise that before!

    I have the Etchr slate mini. I like it as I wanted something small and light to be able to take minimal supplies with me. If I would have gotten a bigger bag I would have taken more supplies that I didn't really need, and then would have had to carry more weight around. I do just fine with the mini.

  • @LuciaDeGiovanni

    I love Indigo paper, so I bought their ring bound sketchbook and used it only once, because... ick. So I cut out all the pages, put them in a leather folder and I also made a couple of mini perfect bound sketchbooks with a few pages. I feel you on that!

    • @JosieViolet
      @JosieViolet  2 роки тому

      That’s such a great way to recycle the paper! I should probably do something like that with mine because the paper is still good, I just hate the ring binder 😂

    I love spiral bound sketchbooks. The paper lies completely flat. Hard and soft bound books always seem to have a poofy part near the spine that makes me crazy. Almost bought the Etchr Slate but it’s seriously ugly and I’m all for functionality over looks, but these are art supplies and ought not to be so unattractive. One purchase I regretted instantly was the Etchr Mirror. Should have returned it.

    Tarp or drop cloth on top of the beige carpet. Can sell the silk paintings after.
    Just saying. Put a drop cloth down if you care about damaging the carpet, easy solution.
    A drop cloth or tarp is helpful with plenty of arts/crafts if you are afraid for the floor!
    Hope my comment helps someone.

    I have the etchre bag. Ikeep it ,
    and use it in the car when I’m sketching out and about. Most of the place I would go I would still be close to the car for snacks and such. I don’t keep much in it. I use the Derwent ArtPack canvas case for my on the go art supplies. It fits in my EDC backpack. I don’t use Tomboes. For drawing. I use the Faber -Castel Pitt markers. They are light fast and I only use the gray shades and the skin tone ones. I despise rings for watercolor sketch books. I don’t use hard bound either to heavy to carry with me all the time. I am currently using a 100% cotton soft cover A5
    Strathmore mixed media book. It is not perfect but is very nice. I also love Hahnamuhle sketch books. A5 is the perfect on the go size for me any bigger and I don’t take it out and sketch/paint.

    • @JosieViolet
      @JosieViolet  2 роки тому

      That sounds great, I think if I had a car I would have a completely different set up because there’s so much more room for carrying things! Agreed on spiral bound books, I don’t like that you can’t go across the page if you want to 📖

    I like spiral bound art books if they have lessons I might want to copy, but as far as sketchbooks go, I like the hardbound ones. Spiral sketchbooks feel junky and impermanent. Not that I'm creating any great art in them, but I do like to go back and see things I've forgotten about.

    • @JosieViolet
      @JosieViolet  Рік тому +1

      Agreed, I think it’s that hardbound books feel more like real books! 😊

  • @natashakorff5574
    @natashakorff5574 2 роки тому

    Agreed! Ring bound sketchbooks are just obnoxious. The stick out and the books look untidy when you store them. Yuck. Hardbound all the way. I made my own little traveler's notebook for going out and about, as well as a hardbound 100% cotton sketchbook that travels quite well.

    For silk painting I use sharpies or just alcohol markers and then spray or drizzle on alcohol it comes out beautiful and so wasy

  • @craftycrandall
    @craftycrandall 2 роки тому

    Huh! I've never heard of silk painting. That's pretty neat! I can see where it would be a pain compared to other painting methods if you don't have the space though. Do you have any recommendations for supplies similar to the etchr case (with the same functional intention, not just your average bag) but perhaps with a bit more space? It looks like it would be convenient, but I agree I'd want it for hiking.

    • @JosieViolet
      @JosieViolet  2 роки тому +1

      It's a lot of fun but definitely risky to clothes and carpets! I know that Etchr does a bigger satchel that's more of a messenger bag style (probably not great for hiking though). For me, a good quality backpack and the Etchr Field case does the job perfectly!

    This was super interesting to me, as I had the slate mini on my 'some day' wishlist! I do like the field case also, but wish that it also could be just a little wider. It is a struggle to fit my phone or even a small passport size notebook in the front exterior pocket. If I add my sketchbook inside the case along with all my pens and supplies, then there seems to be no room to add anything in those tall interior pockets at the back. If there were in-between sizes of all the cases that would be good! :D

    • @JosieViolet
      @JosieViolet  2 роки тому +1

      I do have the larger slate, so maybe if I had the mini it wouldn’t be as annoying to carry an extra bag along with it! Check my vid on how I sketch outside with the etchr field case which shows how I can fit a small sketchbook along with watercolour palette 😊 But yes it is definitely a tight squeeze, the front pocket of the field case is basically pointless, it would fit a debit card at most!

    • @SquibbleDesign
      @SquibbleDesign 2 роки тому

      @@JosieViolet Thank you! Yes I saw that one when you released it - it's why I tried my etchr field case again after shelving it for so long! But that very small external pocket is kind of a deal breaker for me as I was hoping it could be my 'grab and go art bag' with the shoulder strap! I have since been using other more roomy cases and have even made my own with lots of extra pockets!
