Oof I wanted a back story for my character that was original and unique but my DM made mine for me to fit with the story and how my character is there and so obviously I had to get the parents brutally murdered somehow and me being an illegal immigrant of some sort... 😤😤
I played a character that had lovely parents and was trying to surpass them in skill and reputation, to do them proud by achieving success in the magic item trade.
Got to admit that about half my characters have this 'original' back story. I even had one that came with a wife and 2 kids, still alive, and adventuring was simply a job

I like to travel and be my own boss. The money is good, and I use a pseudonym so that no one retaliates against my family. Between quests and adventures, I go home and spend time with my wife and kids, amply saving for their apprenticeship, dowery, or tuition as well as my eventual retirement.

I've played in a group that all had edgey backgrounds. Eventually they turned their attention to my Halfling Warlock "Luke Evergreen". They all had assumed I was gonna be edgey when they found out I was a warlock, the look on their faces when it turned out that Luke's entire family were alive and well, he wrote to them all the time and he was in a friendly partnership with a celestial unicorn was priceless lol.

His mother was a tavern owner and his father was the tavern chef, he had four sisters and three brothers who helped run the tavern. When Luke walked through the door, he was nearly trampled to death by the stampede of family members trying to hug him.
And that's why i like realistic backstories, like the the son of a noble lord who became a knight errant because he is the second born and won't inherit his father's estate, it was either that or enrolling into the wizard's academy. It also gives an advantage, like being able to borrow your big bro's army.
Rogues are also often assumed to have a tragic backstory. The surprise on my party's face when they saw the huge mansion my very much alive family was living in. "I thought you grew up in the streets ! - What ? I never said that ! - So you are not poor at all... - Nope. - Why are you always stealing then ?! - Family tradition. -... wat. - Our ancestors made their fortune by stealing kings and nobility. Killit's happy-go-lucky attitude is adorable. Our druid is similarly optimistic at all times, and his innocence and friendly nature are a great way to get us into trouble.

One day, he saw a busker being praised by a crowd of strangers and among that crowd he found purpose - by studying music and becoming a bard he might finally be noticed, might finally be loved. He stole the busker's loot while the they were busy showboating to the crowd - his forgettability finally paying off - and spent the next several years honing his skills. Eventually, he became proficient enough to be confident to take to the streets, earning a meagre amount at first that grew with each passing week as he now developed his talents as a performer and could afford to buy products to beautify himself - no longer the greasy 'street-rat' with a drowned out voice, puberty and money made him a handsome man with mane of soft hair and a voice that could fill a town square. Adoration came to him, young women swooned over the charismatic stranger as he wondered from village to village bringing a sense of adventure and excitement to the otherwise dull atmosphere and yet... This adoration was hollow; no mother or father would let their daughter to marry an out-of-town stranger, no sane person would long leave the comforts of home, family and friends for the dangers and discomfort of the open road and once his songs were sung he was just another poor wastrel with no place to call home. Most would balk, yet to Andreus, he had found home. Dousing the fireplace before stray embers found purchase and righting up the furnature that had been thrown aside by the raiders who ransacked the cottage only hours before, Andreus proceed to wash the bodies, re-clothe them in whatever wasn't stolen or torn apart and assemble them around the square dining table - each sat infront of plates meticulously reassembled (though not fixed) by the delusional bard. With the house restored to a semblance of order, Andreus sat down, shared his rations out with his 'family' and told them all about how much he missed them and what he'd gotten up to. He was so proud his 'little brother' wanted to be just like him and promised that next time, he'd teach him how to play the lute. Since then, every week or two Andreus returns to the increasingly dilapidated hut to reunite with his family and tell them all about his adventures and the friends he's made, every week or two a new layer is added to the decaying filth of rotten food that sits upon broken plates before the skeletal remains of his immortal family. Every week he leaves with a contented smile on his face, and no one - not even he - knows how much is real, and how much is the mask. That edgy enough for ya? ;P

They were kind of happy to send her off because a bored trickster doesn't make life easy for people around them 😂 She did understand where they were coming from, but also couldn't change her nature. So everyone was happier with her out adventuring lol

Infact a group is most easily defined by who is left outside, instead of who is let in. This is true from childrens playground to global politics. Hate against immigrants is used to gain political power. In WW2, nazis gained power through persecution, and the holocaust was a consequence of their growing desperation on a losing war. Creating a common enemy seems to be easier to humans than just being friends.

This is perfect because I actually made a Bard with this this same thing. Loving mother and father, youngest of 6 children, decided to become a Bard and adventure the world spreading joy with music, with his family's support. And my friends at the table all have massively horrible backstories.
My half elf bard is the middle of seven iirc on her (human) mother's side and she lived with her mother, stepfather and some other stepsiblings she's a bit of a jerk but has a soft spot for sweet younger tieflings in particular because they remind her of her little sister who I later played in another campaign in the same universe she's the 3rd youngest of a boatload of children, a warlock/bard who accidentally made a pact with her "auntie" but is overall a sweetheart who just wants to make people happy and is adventuring because she listened to a lot of stories from her older siblings and wanted to be like them, she's one of my few good aligned characters and the charlatan background is from learning to play and win games from her sister and being taught to never use her real name on dodgy contracts or around questionable people

I started playing in my first ever campaign and everyone in the party already lost their parents, land or had none to begin with and I just joined the ride with both of my parents safe at home and a little brother that I haven't seen since my pc was a child.
@@garwinna1258 Negative modifiers apply only to the results, a die roll itself is always natural, or you read it as it says. The only difference being d10, which has number zero, but you always read it as 10. Unless you are rolling percentile chances, in which first is always tens and second is always ones. So two zeroes would be 100 but a first zero is always followed by another roll, which will result in 1-9 or 100. So, you can get a result of zero, with maluses, but then, you can go to negatives with that too, zero is not special. A dice roll can never be zero. With d20 system, as the intro uses, lowest you can get is 1, which is worse than zero, because zero simply fails to be as good result as is needed for success, usually 10 for something easy, 15 for mediocre challenging. 1, however, is a Critical Fail. Whatever you attempt, fails automatically, no matter how good you are. If your skill is 20 and you need only 10, a 1 from a roll still always fails. Just as natural 20 always succeeds. Some systems/situations reward a natural 20 with extra success such as extra damage on attacks, usually with a modifier of 2/3 or 4, and cause extra problems with a 1, like, the arrrow you meant for the enemys ear now is stuck in your foot anf you take the damage instead. Anyway, in any case, 1 is a critical failure and cannot succeed in any circumstances. So 1 for All is both part of the motto of Alexandre Dumas's Three musketeers, but with die roll it means everyone fails as badly as they can.

There is no rule that says anything against it, so it's a decision for the player or the group. 2.: A Nat 1 is not a critical failure outside of combat and a nat 20 is not a critical success outside of combat. Nixie sets the bar on fire, killing everyone inside including the party and herself Episode 2: Antrius fails his stealth, Evandra fails her intimidation, so Nixie kills the guard without consulting the party, putting them all in danger because there's more guards Episode 3: They all fail their night watch and get their stuff stolen Episode 4: Antrius seduces his way out of a death sentence after Nixie burned half the city and Evandra beat their target to death without letting him talk Episode 5: Antrius tries to make a distraction after Evandra killed three people because she didn't want to pay two silver, and then she tries to get rid of the bodies, before being seen and killing the entire crowd (along with the children) and being happy with herself Episode 6: We learn that Evandra was hated by her family, that Nixie burned her down her house with her whole family inside it and that Antrius has a happy home life He's always been the sane one out of them
I, (insert name here), hereby predict that in one of these episodes, Antrius will save the gang from being horribly murdered by *the mob* by playing epically on his ukulele. So epically, the gods themselves observe this rare occurrence, and reward Antrius with a magic guitar. Meanwhile, Evandra and Nixie are probably trying to either kill people, or disguise an accidental burning or hitting their head so hard it collapses into itself.
Antriuses is like: "As a handsome, talented young male who is a college student whose parents are alive and well and love him very dearly, I too understand the pain of loss and persecution."
As someone who both hate and love tragic backstories. However, something I am always a MASSIVE sucker for is when the people overcome their backstories.
1:28 Tieflings are not "possessed" by any evil entity. The curse merely affects their appearance. But many people believe otherwise. Nixie might be living up to people's expectations with her cruel and destructive personality.
It was never said they weren't. ^.^ Given the shut down of the 'why are you all here?'... I am pretty confident that is EXACTLY what they were there to do and he just got the jump on them with kindness and they hesitated. and there were smores.
Y’know, looking at Nixie’s character sheet, the fact that it’s so chaotic and disorganized while still actually depicting her backstory makes me kinda sad about her mental state.
I swear I am the only person who doesnt always do some tragic backstory. Nope just a dude who lived in a good household and wants to see the world, nothing crazy or grim.
You're not. You'd think becoming a parent was the most dangerous thing in the world, after seeing the lame backstories people come up with. (Who the hell would have a child at that rate?) Some people have other circumstances besides dead/bad families for getting stuck in adventuring. Some of my characters hate adventuring, and want to return to a normal life eventually. This isn't just for fantasy/D&D games either. No matter what genre or system you play, you don't need a traumatic backstory all the time. Mix it up a little. On a similar note, focus on a characters current motivations and goals, for the forestory. (Yes, that's the actual antonym word).
@@Warhammered dead on, my current character is just trying to secure his own position and power since he stands to inherit nothing from his family. Great upbringing just too far down in line of succession. Having goals to work towards rather that angst and tragedy is almost refreshing these days.
0:46 Them are some fighting words coming from a human in D&D. Unless the campaign specify that you are in a world which humans are pretty much slaves to other races. Humans are almost never persecuted in D&D, they are the most superior race in numbers(if you do not count Goblins, but they often get eaten or killed by each other or other races), Can use magic, has the most land under their control and conquest the most of all the races(while there are some races that had empires, they often do not last and are eventually taken over by humans) in D&D lore
I did that in one of my last DnD groups, we were all asked to make elaborate (or attempt to do so) backstories, and everyone except me had horrible experiences, while my PC had a happy home life. Made my character much more grounded (vs being a murder hobo).
In the party I'm currently running, two players died in their backstory and came back. They were sacrificed, coincidentally, by two separate cults (one for Myrkul, one for Zariel). The first one was brought back by another god to destroy the Myrkul cult and the second was sacrificed willingly as a part of a ritual to be reincarnated as a tiefling.
This was great! Made me think of the, we were so poor, Monty Python skit. "Luxury. We used to have to get out of the lake at three o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of hot gravel, go to work at the mill every day for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would beat us around the head and neck with a broken bottle, if we were LUCKY!"

In a project I saw, there was a group of semi professionals and a professional drama teacher, and the secret was to him acting worse than they, so the stars could shine, otherwise he would have set the level of expectation and everyone else would have looked worse. My Pathfinder character, a human Princess/Paladin who's the daughter of my last character who became king in that long campaign, totally gets it. It's rough being human, and royal, and famous.

One day, he saw a busker being praised by a crowd of strangers and among that crowd he found purpose - by studying music and becoming a bard he might finally be noticed, might finally be loved. He stole the busker's loot while the they were busy showboating to the crowd - his forgettability finally paying off - and spent the next several years honing his skills. Eventually, he became proficient enough to be confident to take to the streets, earning a meagre amount at first that grew with each passing week as he now developed his talents as a performer and could afford to buy products to beautify himself - no longer the greasy 'street-rat' with a drowned out voice, puberty and money made him a handsome man with mane of soft hair and a voice that could fill a town square. Adoration came to him, young women swooned over the charismatic stranger as he wondered from village to village bringing a sense of adventure and excitement to the otherwise dull atmosphere and yet...
This adoration was hollow; no mother or father would let their daughter to marry an out-of-town stranger, no sane person would long leave the comforts of home, family and friends for the dangers and discomfort of the open road and once his songs were sung he was just another poor wastrel with no place to call home. His loneliness returned in full force without the mitigation of a dream or even the vague comeraderie of his fellow orphans and he fell into a pit of despair that was all the deeper for the mask he had to wear in public - the happy bard from a happy home singing happy songs. Time passed and despair became delusion, his pretence of a family became so deeply rooted he actually started to believe he had one, somewhere...
Then, while passing between villages he saw smoke from deep in a forest, curious he investigated and found a sight most would balk at; a single cottage simple in its design with a single main room and 3 people - one smaller than the others - 'sleeping' outside of it in a bed of red mud. Most would balk, yet to Andreus, he had found home. Dousing the fireplace before stray embers found purchase and righting up the furnature that had been thrown aside by the raiders who ransacked the cottage only hours before, Andreus proceed to wash the bodies, re-clothe them in whatever wasn't stolen or torn apart and assemble them around the square dining table - each sat infront of plates meticulously reassembled (though not fixed) by the delusional bard. With the house restored to a semblance of order, Andreus sat down, shared his rations out with his 'family' and told them all about how much he missed them and what he'd gotten up to. He was so proud his 'little brother' wanted to be just like him and promised that next time, he'd teach him how to play the lute.
Since then, every week or two Andreus returns to the increasingly dilapidated hut to reunite with his family and tell them all about his adventures and the friends he's made, every week or two a new layer is added to the decaying filth of rotten food that sits upon broken plates before the skeletal remains of his immortal family. Every week he leaves with a contented smile on his face, and no one - not even he - knows how much is real, and how much is the mask.
That edgy enough for ya? ;P

I had a character with living parents and siblings. They were kind of happy to send her off because a bored trickster doesn't make life easy for people around them 😂 She did understand where they were coming from, but also couldn't change her nature. So everyone was happier with her out adventuring lol

This is perfect because I actually made a Bard with this this same thing. Loving mother and father, youngest of 6 children, decided to become a Bard and adventure the world spreading joy with music, with his family's support.
And my friends at the table all have massively horrible backstories.

My half elf bard is the middle of seven iirc on her (human) mother's side and she lived with her mother, stepfather and some other stepsiblings she's a bit of a jerk but has a soft spot for sweet younger tieflings in particular because they remind her of her little sister who I later played in another campaign in the same universe she's the 3rd youngest of a boatload of children, a warlock/bard who accidentally made a pact with her "auntie" but is overall a sweetheart who just wants to make people happy and is adventuring because she listened to a lot of stories from her older siblings and wanted to be like them, she's one of my few good aligned characters and the charlatan background is from learning to play and win games from her sister and being taught to never use her real name on dodgy contracts or around questionable people

Love that It's not so weird to not have a tragic backstory. I started playing in my first ever campaign and everyone in the party already lost their parents, land or had none to begin with and I just joined the ride with both of my parents safe at home and a little brother that I haven't seen since my pc was a child.
Nixie's look of joy at "Kill it with fire" had me rolling. Love her!

@@garwinna1258 Negative modifiers apply only to the results, a die roll itself is always natural, or you read it as it says. The only difference being d10, which has number zero, but you always read it as 10. Unless you are rolling percentile chances, in which first is always tens and second is always ones. So two zeroes would be 100 but a first zero is always followed by another roll, which will result in 1-9 or 100.
So, you can get a result of zero, with maluses, but then, you can go to negatives with that too, zero is not special. A dice roll can never be zero.
With d20 system, as the intro uses, lowest you can get is 1, which is worse than zero, because zero simply fails to be as good result as is needed for success, usually 10 for something easy, 15 for mediocre challenging.
1, however, is a Critical Fail. Whatever you attempt, fails automatically, no matter how good you are. If your skill is 20 and you need only 10, a 1 from a roll still always fails. Just as natural 20 always succeeds.
Some systems/situations reward a natural 20 with extra success such as extra damage on attacks, usually with a modifier of 2/3 or 4, and cause extra problems with a 1, like, the arrrow you meant for the enemys ear now is stuck in your foot anf you take the damage instead.
Anyway, in any case, 1 is a critical failure and cannot succeed in any circumstances.
So 1 for All is both part of the motto of Alexandre Dumas's Three musketeers, but with die roll it means everyone fails as badly as they can.

1.: In many cases people give the roll after modifiers. There is no rule that says anything against it, so it's a decision for the player or the group.
2.: A Nat 1 is not a critical failure outside of combat and a nat 20 is not a critical success outside of combat. Else you would have a 5% chance to, for example, lift a mountain. All the time.

4:00 for once he was the normal and sane one out of them.
Episode 1: Evandra gets herself drunk. Antrius plays music like a foot. Nixie sets the bar on fire, killing everyone inside including the party and herself
Episode 2: Antrius fails his stealth, Evandra fails her intimidation, so Nixie kills the guard without consulting the party, putting them all in danger because there's more guards
Episode 3: They all fail their night watch and get their stuff stolen
Episode 4: Antrius seduces his way out of a death sentence after Nixie burned half the city and Evandra beat their target to death without letting him talk
Episode 5: Antrius tries to make a distraction after Evandra killed three people because she didn't want to pay two silver, and then she tries to get rid of the bodies, before being seen and killing the entire crowd (along with the children) and being happy with herself
Episode 6: We learn that Evandra was hated by her family, that Nixie burned her down her house with her whole family inside it and that Antrius has a happy home life

I, (insert name here), hereby predict that in one of these episodes, Antrius will save the gang from being horribly murdered by *the mob* by playing epically on his ukulele. So epically, the gods themselves observe this rare occurrence, and reward Antrius with a magic guitar. Meanwhile, Evandra and Nixie are probably trying to either kill people, or disguise an accidental burning or hitting their head so hard it collapses into itself.

It was never said they weren't. ^.^ Given the shut down of the 'why are you all here?'... I am pretty confident that is EXACTLY what they were there to do and he just got the jump on them with kindness and they hesitated. and there were smores.
Y’know, looking at Nixie’s character sheet, the fact that it’s so chaotic and disorganized while still actually depicting her backstory makes me kinda sad about her mental state.
I swear I am the only person who doesnt always do some tragic backstory. Nope just a dude who lived in a good household and wants to see the world, nothing crazy or grim.
You're not. You'd think becoming a parent was the most dangerous thing in the world, after seeing the lame backstories people come up with. (Who the hell would have a child at that rate?) Some people have other circumstances besides dead/bad families for getting stuck in adventuring. Some of my characters hate adventuring, and want to return to a normal life eventually.
This isn't just for fantasy/D&D games either. No matter what genre or system you play, you don't need a traumatic backstory all the time. Mix it up a little. On a similar note, focus on a characters current motivations and goals, for the forestory. (Yes, that's the actual antonym word).

0:46 Them are some fighting words coming from a human in D&D. Unless the campaign specify that you are in a world which humans are pretty much slaves to other races. Humans are almost never persecuted in D&D, they are the most superior race in numbers(if you do not count Goblins, but they often get eaten or killed by each other or other races), Can use magic, has the most land under their control and conquest the most of all the races(while there are some races that had empires, they often do not last and are eventually taken over by humans) in D&D lore
I did that in one of my last DnD groups, we were all asked to make elaborate (or attempt to do so) backstories, and everyone except me had horrible experiences, while my PC had a happy home life. Made my character much more grounded (vs being a murder hobo).

In the party I'm currently running, two players died in their backstory and came back. They were sacrificed, coincidentally, by two separate cults (one for Myrkul, one for Zariel). The first one was brought back by another god to destroy the Myrkul cult and the second was sacrificed willingly as a part of a ritual to be reincarnated as a tiefling.
This was great! Made me think of the, we were so poor, Monty Python skit.

In a project I saw, there was a group of semi professionals and a professional drama teacher, and the secret was to him acting worse than they, so the stars could shine, otherwise he would have set the level of expectation and everyone else would have looked worse.

thank you for allowing the backstory into the videos. some don't realize how wonderful the backstory is so the DM can take into consideration the game ahead and allow each character's backstory to profoundly shape the game! Kudos!
