I use every open space for storage. I use my front door hall way which is unheated for potatoes and downstairs which is 10 degrees cooler than upstairs for onions and my food storage for every thing else. Got to learn to use what you have. Great video! Thank you.
You're a woman after my own heart. I lived off the grid for 15 years, most of it as a single Mom, 50 miles outside of town and still have the property. (Need to rebuild the house.) I would home can everything I could. After my divorce I ripped out the central bathroom, the pipes always froze in there, and turned it into a little pantry. I had an organic greenhouse where I grew 70-75% of our produce. Flat top wood stove where I cooked when the propane truck couldn't get in. I love it! I would go to town every 4-8weeks. No cow but used whipping cream (longer self life) and dry milk to make "milk". Chickens for eggs. Now I'm teaching my DBF the joys of having a stocked pantry. We're turning a whole room into our pantry. 😀 He loves my home canned spaghetti sauce, chili, stews and soups. WHOO HOO!
I just found food grade buckets at Lowes. The lids are like a 2 in 1. They have a inner lid that screws out so its easy to scoop out supplies. Gamma lids I think they're called.
Excellent topic! 💚 In my opinion, homesteading, prepping/self sufficiency, it all blends together! It’s exciting seeing more & more people jump on board! Self reliance is a beautiful thing! I turned an entire temp controlled extra bedroom into dry storage with shelving, love it.
Hey Jill, heard you just fine. Thanks for the tour. I’m a glass jar fan also. I keep as much as I can in them! Love to look and see exactly what I have. 🥰
We took a small walk in closet and turned that into a pantry, added shelving on one side of the wall only, too narrow for shelves on both sides and that 31/2 ft x8ft space is holding a lot of food!!!! When I fill that up, I will shove canned items under beds and floors of other closets! Make do with what you have, make it simple and easy.
I'm impressed, and when do you have the time, you must be a great organizer. I have been doing this, on a smaller scale, without the canning, for years, it gives you a secure feeling. In fact, I used to get flack about my toilet paper backup, until this year that is.
While I am not a homesteader,I live in the country and am 30-45 minutes away from a big grocery store. I keep backups of my backups so your pantries look like mine. I was really thankful of that fact when we had trouble getting pantry staples. Thanks for the video!
I'm in the suburbs of a large city and my pantry system is similar too. I always thought it was because I wanted to be prepared, but also am sort of lazy and cannot stand to go to the store a whole lot!
I love your non perfectionist vibe and showing us we aren't alone in doing things in a lived in way! You're so very inviting! Also: I tend to keep my sesame seed oil in the fridge. It keeps it from going rancid so fast. 😉
There is captions if people are having a hard time listening. Just figured I point that out after seeing a lot of people being upset over the volume. Its probably youtube fault with the sound. One of video of mine did the same thing, had to re-upload. Annoying, but it happens.
What a sweet programme. I'm on one acre and grow my own food but we've had nothing but rain for months in Sydney Australia which is a change from the heat but crops are a disaster. I'll watch more of your ideas.
I started sticking extras years ago. Then it blew up to a working/long term pantry. I order from Azure Standard a few months a year. I just started teaching myself to can. Ive been having fun with that. Its so much more satisfying to walk into a pantry and see your own hard work v/s a bunch of stroe bought cans. I do still buy some cans to keep just in case. But im trying to stock my own of everything we eat. I do make my own mayo as well but I have a few from Azure in the pantry. I like to make myself think I live far from a store. A few years ago they put one in our tow and I have a love hate relationship with that store.
Loved the tour Jill. I'm glad to see that you have a "mason jar mess" drawer too! I started using Re-Cap lids four years ago and love them! Love all of your videos but the kitchen ones are my fav.
Great video. Growing up we had something like what you have only it was with store can goods, along with paper goods (my parents were from the depression). Us kids called it "mom's home grocery store". I have the same only with mostly home canned goods and some store bought that I don't can or have run out of the home grown. Love the jar containers for storage. Have been weeding out plastic containers though my husband prefers the plastic, he is coming around. My herbs and spices are separated and put into alphabetical order. Makes it easier for me to grab. LOL!! Thanks again.
Thank you for a very important and teaching video. Such lovely areas where you keep food and pantry items. I haven’t listened to your videos, but now I found them, I will be listening more now. A very nice, well done video!
You are the only homesteader I follow. I love how you keep your home and ranch. We have ambitions to do the same someday. Blessings to you and yours! ❤️🙏🏻
Please make a video on converting that space into a cold cellar when you do it. Also looking forward to the grain mill video, we’ve been wanting to get a grain mill soon.
Wow! I love all your handy cupboards with pull outs. Also, I got that same grain mill based on one of your older videos. We love it. Thanks for sharing your pantry.
I always feel better when I know the pantry and freezer are well stocked. I don't have all the space you have, but I do like it when the shelves are full. If there is a hurricane or something crazy going on, I like to know I can still cook for a couple of weeks if I need to.
This is what I do too. We are working on cellar this fall. I go to store x1 a month. Raise our meat, veggies, herbs. Natural grocery is a good source for herbs
You took me back to my 1950's childhood in rural northeastern Connecticut. Mostly dairy farms and corn, old houses and barns, root cellars, wood burning cook stoves and recycling before the word recycling existed. I feel deep gratitude for having grown up that way. You've put a modern twist on all of that. I love it. I now live in an 800+ year old home in Italy, and wouldn't you think I'd be able to live a homestead sort of life. But you would be wrong. I can by olive oil 10 liters at a time from the olive trees outside the door, and wine from my landlord's vineyard, but flour in bulk, baking soda, baking powder (barely exists) and a whole host of supplies easy to come by back in the States are hard to come by here. When I saw your huge jar of vanilla my eyes nearly popped out of my head. The tiniest bottle of vanilla here costs the earth, as lemon is more frequently used in Italian baking. I'm heading to your blog to find your recipe. Instead of a basement I have two cantinas, storage spaces sort of like low ceiling sheds, fine for gardening tools and such, but so damp I wouldn't dare put foodstuffs out there. Even firewood, unless it's seasoned to an extreme degree, stays damp. Nothing at all like the basement of my Italian grandparents in CT where the array of canned goods in glass jars was a world unto itself. Along with my grandfather's copper still for making grappa.😂😵💫 I follow you on Pinterest and now on UA-cam. I look forward to other videos. Thank you for this lovely tour and for all the memories you brought back to me.
Great advice! If you don't have a cabinet, or pantry to use one can use a solid shelving unit/book shelf. If the shelf has wire shelves, just line the shelf with wood or cardboard. I use a couple of shelves in my dining room as my extended pantry. My plan is to hang a curtain in front of it eventually.
We have been working on this as well. I've always been a big believer in preparedness, but when all this stuff hit, I realized how woefully unprepared we actually were. I'm now challenging myself to see how long I can stay out of the grocery store. We did a big pantry stock up for staples recently, our garden is producing, our pullets should start laying in the next couple months, and I plan to do a large meat order in the fall - some of which I will freeze, and some I will can so we're less dependent on electricity. Thanks for sharing your pantry tour, I always love seeing how other homesteaders organize their pantries.
I have a grocery store about 10 miles away but being a rural area they don't always carry all the things I might want/need for a recipe or if they do it's expensive. My amin goal for a well stocked 'larder' is being able to make pretty much whatever I want at anytime without having to run out for some random ingredient....tacos 3 days this week....I'm okay because if I run out of taco seasoning I have everything to make the seasoning. Just a simple example but that's my reason for a well stocked pantry
I make as much as I can from scratch because my only suspect for triggering my illness symptoms is additives in commercially supplied foods. Where I live, a hurricane can cut the exit from town during the warmer seasons and a blizzard during the winter. I am 30 min from the nearest grocery store Because of those, I keep a one month supply of perishables that I have to buy, 3+ months of non perishables, and try to grow an entire year worth of storage crops. A basement cellar is an excellent idea. My cellar is some distance from the house. Quite an inconvenience during winter.
Why does your sound, sound so quiet? I have the volume all the way up and you keep lowering int he beginning there? I had to install a Bluetooth speaker to increase the sound and it's still very quiet. Maybe use a microphone or listen to your videos after working on them?

I keep my flour in the freezer to keep fresh that root cellar is perfect for flour and spices I also keep spices in freezer stay fresh as day I bought them .
Thank you so much for showing us how to get started on stocking our pantries. This has really helped me to getting more serious about my family's food supply. Very thoughtful of you for doing this for us.
I started my pantry when I was 21. I budgeted a certain amount every month for groceries. If I had money left over, I began using that money to buy beans and rice initially-my line of work was feast or famine so I thought it would be a good idea to have some food that I liked on hand when I didn’t have money to go to the store. I’m very envious of your pantry!
We bought a rental this year, took lots of hard work to get it up to the rental standard but it is great way to invest both time and money, to restore a home that needs some love : )
Just subscribed! Love your style & tips:). Your basement storage is totally #goals!!! Lol. I’d love to create an area like that in my home. I have lots of things stocked but with 6 kiddos my teens eat ALOT😁. The Lord always provides but when stores are showing shortages coming again it makes this mama take extra steps to make sure we have what we need. Thanks for sharing, blessings! ~Shannon
Hi Jill, love all of your videos, however, I had trouble hearing you as volume was too low. Perhaps it had something to do with where you clipped your microphone to your shirt. Just thought you should know!
I appreciate and love all you tips!! Question, have you ever thought of using a food vacu saver or silicone vacuum lids for both bags and jar storage? We don't blog, but have had our Fetta cheese last 3+mos and lettuce a month. ( 1) FoodSaver FM5000 Series 2-in-1 Vacuum Sealing System (For bags and external hose for jar lids); 2) Casabella Silicone Lid and Splatter Guard (tried others this is the best)
Jill I just moved into a different home & when creating these areas. Veggie curing area :Pantry or : basement storage area :Root cellar What are ideal temp or lighting conditions, I noticed your pantry is your laundry room also Thank you for letting me puck your brain 😘👍🏻 God Bless🙏 Linda from Ct
Great video! Enjoyed the tour. The volume was extremely low when watching it on my tv, even when I had the volume all the way up, I decided to pull up the video on my cellphone and it was much better!
Would LOVE a good gluten free, dairy free lard pie crust recipe. I've heard of adding baking powder to improve texture but I'm intimidated to play with it tbh.
I don't know if you have bees I can't remember if I saw any bees on your property. If not have you thought about getting bees and then for the winter when it's really cold move them into the greenhouse where they're still dormant but they're protected from the winds and the snow.
There is a problem with using coconut oil is that because of the lauric acid in the oil, it can raise your LDL cholesterol level, so if you have high cholesterol already then coconut oil will raise it more.
Thanks for sharing! This video makes me even more grumpy about my coconut allergy! Haha. I have celiacs too so no gluten for me either. Still we make it work.
Great & helpful video! (I'm wondering where that stash of quart jar pinto beans is though, your refried bean recipe from your cookbook certainly upped my canning them, haha)
Great video! We stock much of the same thing. I’ve got the same bag of Rice Ramen in our pantry (Costco, right?) haha! Still trying to figure out what to do with it! Also, I had no problem hearing you, so might be different on different devices, just so you know:)
Anna I like to saute up some onions and cabbage from the garden and make chow mein with the Costco Rice Ramen noodles. Toss in some soy sauce or coconut aminos, pepper, salt and rice vinegar or mirin. Delish!
Where can you store home canned goods if you don't have a basement or root cellar? We're off grid (without ac and heat with wood in the winter) and I am worried about temperature fluctuations inside the house.
Hi Jill! Just love your channel and I also have your cookbook, which I love. I do have a question about your tee shirts. How do they run for women? Big, small? I see you are wearing one on your blog and just wondering about the fit.
You can get a 25 lb bag of salt on Real salt's website, its pricey but lasts forever, and is the cheapest per ounce. I put it in a bucket with a Gamma Lid, and just refill a jar and shaker every to often.
@@NS-pf2zc Thanks! I didn't think to check their website. *face palm* I love this salt! I usually get the bag with the pour nozzle from my local co-op but have just discovered that it can be bought in bulk quantity!
My Question Is why You Don't Own a Harvest Right Freeze Dryer I just Purchased One but it won't be here for 6 weeks after harvest is over. But I am Still Excited to do stuff Like Milk and Meats .
Great video! Thank you so much for sharing. Do you mind if I ask where you got your cabinets?? They look like hickory and I’ve been looking everywhere for a good quality Hickory cabinet that doesn’t break the bank.. :)
We're BACK after taking a little UA-cam Break! To get the awesome mason jar lids I mentioned in the video, go here: @t

I could barely hear anything you were saying😩 I love your site though!! Thank you for ALL of your amazing videos!
Great Post❤
donut store buckets are great. BUT sometimes the smell won't comebout even with bleaching! it's fine to us but maybe others won't
Can you post a link to the coconut oil you like?
Yes please to grain mill video!
Great & helpful video! (I'm wondering where that stash of quart jar pinto beans is though, your refried bean recipe from your cookbook certainly upped my canning them, haha)
I would highly suggest switching your flour to completely organic flour as doing so for me help me with issues
I love that contraption you keep your baked goods in! Did you remove the shelves and insert that yourself? Where can I find this?
My oil is homemade Ghee. It seems to be better than crisco in many ways
Delish!
How do you keep your potatoes so long without going green?
Love the Coconut Liquid Aminos, so Delicious in foods! Also, I use a Kitchen Aid Grain Mill, is that not as good as your Free Standing one?
Where can you store home canned goods if you don't have a basement or root cellar? We're off grid (without ac and heat with wood in the winter) and I am worried about temperature fluctuations inside the house.
Hi Jill! Just love your channel and I also have your cookbook, which I love. I do have a question about your tee shirts. How do they run for women? Big, small? I see you are wearing one on your blog and just wondering about the fit.
This looked like a video I'd love watching, but I couldn't get it very loud. All the other videos on YT I'm watching are loud enough.
Love this! Thanks! Do you make your own lard?
FYI GLASS JARS BRWAK. PUT SOME KIND OF BOX , PADDING OR BOARDED IN CASE OF EARTH QUAKE
Beautiful! Loved it!!❤xxoo
Love this! Where did you get the big bag of salt? I love that brand but the largest amount I've found is a 10 lb bucket on Amazon.
@@bernadettejohnson7430 Haha. I never thought to either until someone told me about it! I'm just paying it forward!😉
@@NS-pf2zc Thanks!
Great organization! What do you do with your garbanzo beans?
I am super curious what was on the shelf above the soap making supplies? There were a bunch of round drum containers.
Those were freeze dried items in #10 cans looked like the brand “Thrive”. Can purchase at Costco and internet.
how do you control pantry moths? I wish my pantry had home canned, but I do have a pantry of store bought canned veggies, meat and fruits.
Really wish the volume would be higher on this video... thanks
What were in the metal canisters in the downstairs storage room? You didn't talk about those!
My Question Is why You Don't Own a Harvest Right Freeze Dryer I just Purchased One but it won't be here for 6 weeks after harvest is over.
But I am Still Excited to do stuff Like Milk and Meats .
Love your videos , but this one has volume so low my tablet will not allow me to turn up level on my earphones .
Great video! Thank you so much for sharing. Do you mind if I ask where you got your cabinets?? They look like hickory and I’ve been looking everywhere for a good quality Hickory cabinet that doesn’t break the bank.. :)
