$122,500 For A Spacious & Innovative Cruising Sailboat for Sale - EP 13

- Опубліковано 22 лип 2024
- This week, we find a newer sailboat for sale compared to our usual 60s/70s/80s classics. This one is also quite a bit more expensive then our normal price range so we decided to check out this sleek 1997 Beneteau 461 and see if it's worth the extra $$$. See if Captain Q might take a liking to this "newer" boat (that is over 20 years old)... does it meet his criteria??!

Just to dream about sailing away into the sunset, waving a tearful goodbye to the missus as she sees me and our retirement fund heading over the horizon. Glad to see the channel gaining momentum.
As the Padrie's say, "Go small, go simple, go NOW."
I found the channel a few days ago and have been bringing since. The Captain is an encyclopedia of boat knowledge. Thank you both!!
I'm soooo happy I found this channel! I close on the sale of my house in NV on the 18th, afterwards I will be shopping for my 1st floating home on the east coast. I LOVE how most of the vessels you show are cheaper than a used car. Keep the content and positive vibes coming 🤘⛵
Good luck!!
Thank you, I have enjoyed watching your channel. After watching all of the Millennials on You Tube, it's nice to see someone with your breath of knowledge.
Wow, thank you! I have to admit i was a millennial once ...about 50 years ago thank you though
Thanks for this!!! Can’t ‘thumbs up’ it enough.
I was able to get onboard one of these years ago while I was in the coast guard. It was a grey misty morning, and walking down into the warmth and openness of the main saloon was just jaw dropping. I felt like I was walking into a hotel lobby.
I say if you have the money, go for one of these!!
In my situation I’d rather get a less expensive boat and tinker away to get it just how I like it.
He always does such a fantastic job of covering the different sailboats. Glad to see his subscribers going up over 1,000 every time he posts a new video.
I know,... kinda makes ya wonder?... 17k subscribers in 4mos!?

I just came across your channel and it's fantastic! As somebody getting into sailing your videos are well done and packed with helpful information. Love your sense of humor and enthusiasm. Sweet pants too.
37 years old here. Saving for my first boat. Great to see so many options and styles. Keep up the great work.
Welcome aboard! its a great world hope you can make the most of it thank you for your note
Great episode but the STAR IS CAPTAIN Q...Such a delight listening to his explanations💖💖💖💖💖

My NEW favorite boat on your channel! Thanks for the great insight and the great videos!
Thanks very much!!!
Loving this channel, Captain Q’s knowledge, descriptions, terminology and positives in every boat are refreshing. I haven’t sailed in 20 years (went to the dark side with Trawlers) and enjoy the sail refresher course each episode. I would love to see a review on a true blue water passage maker and the key features required for crossings.
We have a really interesting couple of blue water cruisers that would do for your crossing coming up stay tuned ( hey trawlers are part of our rites in the end or close to it right ? no lines no storms ( stay at the mooring until they go by etc etc howabout the Great Circle i think that would be fun Ive done about half of that in a way
@@YachtHunters I'm glad you don't overwhelm your posts with to much jargon, you've struck a beautiful balance that makes it a complete joy to watch.
I have nothing against modern designs in general, but an unprotected spade rudder is where i draw the line.
The first thing i learned about sailing is - think what coulg go wrong and prepare for it. Spade rudder never ever for me.
But keep these episodes coming, you're on the right track to find my next boat :)
You got it ... Our pleasure
I like seeing both newer and older boats. Thanks for doing this.
Our pleasure!
@@YachtHunters I have always been into boating but very new on sailboats. I follow captain Rick Moore’s adventures on his Jeanneau. I think it is amazing what can be done with solar and water making, etc
G'day Cptn Q & Ran-day! I started with a trailer sailor when l got the sailing Bug. Quickly upgraded to a 32ft Halvorsen motor sailer, now 5 years after full refit...I bought a SV to enjoy and easily maintain with my wife. Now sailing Queensland Australia in a Beneteau oceanis 400. Love your show, thanks.
attaboy nice path to the freedom and
joy of the sea
Please Please, come to the west coast(northwest) I'll buy all the pints you can drink! Love the show.. I'm a addict.
I'm a seasoned sailor and I always learn something from your show..Thanks Captain.
To your question: I'd rather have something smaller for costal/offshore. 35-40ft less $$
It's great to see so many different boats and see the positives of each layout; helps pinpoint the more desirable boats
We've got some funky ones coming up in the next few episodes... :)
@@YachtHunters the weirder the better LOL
Nice boat ,nice episode , I like the terminology you use , for the boat parts 👍
Great job showing these boats, Captain Q & Ran-Day ! You provide lots of great comments about them with good filming. I am soaking it all in. We want to buy one these more modern 20 yr old boats like the Beneteau 423 or the Jeanneau 40.3. They are all 15 -20 years old but seem to be more solid than the brand new models.
I laughed at that comment about the used car and then showing the dingey. I like your videos Cap'n Q. I try to watch all of them.
Great looking boat and I absolutely love the dark blue hull & spacious interior
2:18... "No come on RAN-DAY!"... LOL 🤣
I enjoyed the tour and video, Captain Q. I chartered the 461 many years ago in the BVI's twice. They sail great and provide a fast, comfortable, safe platform for fun cruising. Judging by the layout, fridge, and engine hours, she was probably a Moorings charter boat at one time. Extensive equipment list. Interesting description in the listing of the "new" electronics installed 13 years ago in 2007. Great boat, but the future buyer should be prepared to drop another $50K (min) on replacing equipment due to things just wearing out. I think the 461 is one of the better Beneteau sailboats ever built.
Thank you...we loose track of time and of course .everything ages some more than others depending on usage but this girl looked like a lot of her stuff still worked and may not be up today with all the bells they keep hanging on the electronics , but maybe you don't have to add all that extra expense right off. Dont forget that firstt of all the asking price is simply what is reported to us but what price is never negotiable and think of the cost to go buy all this boat new today ...wow serious saving Thank you for your note and stay tuned
I do appreciate how you focus on less expensive boats but this definitely adds some nice perspective!
Glad you like them! if you eat hot dogs all
the time you will never know what a good hamburger can taste like
We're really enjoying your videos! Thanks for putting them together!
Thanks for watching!
Of all your videos (just found you a few months ago and have caught up) This one is my favorite so far... :)
Montana boy and have never been on a sailboat. Afraid of ocean tbh. Just wanted to say I really enjoy your videos and find them interesting due to your expertise on the boats. Keep up the great work.
Thank you Q. Beautiful boat!
Just got yourself a new subscriber Captain Q. Thanks for the quality educational content. Great boat that looks ready to go to sea!
Welcome aboard! Thanks, Tim!

Very nice yacht but I still think some of the older ones possess a character the newer yachts have lost. Still I enjoyed this video very much and look forward as always to your next one.
15:19 you could have opened the convertible engine room door! The stairs lift up! Nevertheless, I LOVE this channel. Keep it up! Good job Captain Q and Ran-Day!
I grew up in Georgetown and I used to sail back there every year from Portsmouth New Hampshire to see my parents until last year. If you ever need a place to dock or moor your boat in Georgetown, just reach out to me. Love your videos!
Thanks Jim i too am looking for a boat , probably my last , but i will keep that offer open for when i do find one ...Very kind
As a 1st year student of The Captain and his side kick RanDay and with the new knowledge I have acquired from these very well narrated videos I must say … As I watched this video the one word that kept coming to mind was “ DELUX” . It’s quite the boat and the layout and fit and finish is well, impressive . Just wondering if one person or a couple to handle that boat alone ? Kudos to the designers 👌 Captain Q , see you on the next one 🍺
those port/starboard suspenders are fancy schmancy. I really enjoy the channel. I would love to sail on that Scheel.
Glad you like them! We would like to have sailed on the school but she got stolen out from under us Next time better luck thanks for the "bracing" thoughts
Love watching your channel grow!
Hi captain Q, very nice boat 3 heads, large below area ,galley nice beneteau, thanks for the vlog.
Found your channel and I like the explanations! A lot to learn.

Another great tour thank you Capt Q.
You're in! wait a few more hours something cool and different
Thank you for this beautiful video. Have fun with recording the next videos.
Hi Captain- really enjoying your video tours. You ask what I would like to see- I would like to see a higher percentage of sloops and cutters. I know older guys like a ketch, but to be honest the majority of us are shopping for sloops. Thanks!
Very insightful and well-made video 👍👍👍👍
Greetings from the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, Australia. What a great boat this is and I’m guessing a fraction of the cost of a new one. I would love to watch an episode of you taking us sailing with you on a Beneteau. I learn so much from your UA-cam episodes. Thank you
You are correct and if we could launch her i would have you first on board Please stay tuned
You guys are awesome. Thanks so much! I prefer to keep looking into more affordable boats.
Glad you like them! stay tuned they are coming ... but here are those with a little more latitude financially than the rest of us and....also bigger families lol
Very nice boat. Bring checkbook!
Love this edition., more boats like this one please.
HI Douglass
Happy new year. It certainly is nice to see something oh bright and shiny and ready to go with lots of room for all of your relatives and still have a viable strong offshore boat. They have packed a lot into her and she certainly is rigged for easy handling. We will look for more like this for you and others that have requested it. Thank you for your kind note and have a happy new year
Yes some of us aren't the best Handymen when it comes to boat repairs. We need some that don't require as much repairs.
Loved your video on the Hinckley B40. I just lucked into Zanetia, the last (16th) of their Sou’wester 59s, built 2001. Not a millionaire and never thought I’d own a Hinckley, but it’s so far and above all the other boats I looked at over the past 4 years that I feel like a kid in a dreamland candy store!
YOU HAVE SCORED BIG TIME ....CONGRATULATONS that is so cool .You will never look back i can guarantee if you go to the beginning of episode one (Cal 28 ) you will see why i am so enthusiastic and a little jealous thanks for sharing
Lovely lovely lovely, thank you for the walk through. Love this boat, and honestly for the bang for the buck, this is definitely a 10 🏆
I absolutely enjoy these videos entertaining and very informative, I have learned a great deal about Sailboats from you guys ! Any advice for someone who has little sailing experience but wants to begin sailing and possibly purchase a boat at some point? I am 62 but have always dreamed of sailing, a boat like this would be very comfortable for the family and friends! Keep up the good work!! Thanks
Thanks from the Great Lakes! Keep em coming.
Cheers and welcome aboard!
What a wealth of knowledge, I look forward to Captain Q.
thank you I love this world and i may not get it always correct but its part of me and the part that screws up is the really old part lol
You should mention the construction and structural issues found on these production boats. Also that keel is cast iron....
I think you are probably right but i will confirm thank you for mentioning it
Nice job Cap’n & Ran Day. Good to see a range of vessels, options & features.
It’s a very pleasant way to see & learn more. As if sailing doesn’t teach us enough. Thank you.
Thanks 👍
That boat looks like it has been sailed very little. What a sweet boat.
First of all, I love this channel because Captain Q comes across like a father/grandfather type wanting to show and teach you all these things that go into these older boats. A better suggestion for the his ratings, how about rotating the number of the helm ratings instead of the top of the mast of the sailboat when Capt Q hands out his ratings?
Great suggestion! I will discuss with my meter man Ran-Day who is always open to discussion thanks
And I have to add he IS a GREAT Dad and Grandfather and is always happy to dole out the advice...(even when we were not open to accepting it as stubborn kids)..but as he always said "Hey, it's free..." Thanks for the nice words about our "Pops"
@@hamptonsynnott4360 that is how he comes out across the camera which makes it enjoyable for myself and hopefully many new viewers to the channel to come. Liked: ...not open to accepting it as stubborn kids... certainly can relate within my own family when I was at that age. :-)
Love your channel
Watched so many of your videos on the cheaper older boats. They are great boats but when you see this Beneteu it really shows how much sailing has moved on. Especially the winches and operating everything from the cockpit. For a retired person the heaviest manual physical work would be just cleaning a vessel like that. That engine was the proverbial "eat your dinner off it" clean.
Really like how you always give the price. Nice boat.
Thanks 👍
aaaand it's sold. Thx Captain Q!
Always Love Your Video Walkthrough. I am NAVY

So excited to see another vlog posted this weekend, you guys make me (and us I imagine) want to be there with you, at least to hold the ladder! What and interesting review, and another lovely boat, so far I wanted every one of them. What is Captain Q's view on such open spaces in a boat while under way?
which open spaces please?
Captain Q, it appears to the untrained eye (edit: untrained eye being mine), the space behind the cook in galley seemed would be difficult in rough water to brace oneself. I think you addressed it in another post I commented on within this vlog. Really enjoy this format
Beauty of a sailboat
Well done Capt Q, as always. Do you remember the Morgan sailboats of the eighties? Not sure if I remember my Dad telling stories of inferior construction. There is a 82 Morgan 60 Schooner in Boston for 126K that looks like a little elbow grease would put her in great shape. Just cant remember if they had a problem with the hull delaminating.
I like this one. More like this, please.
A lot of nice design features on her…
Gorgeous boat.
Another nice boat Cap'n. I went ahead and subscribed. I've told you before I'll never own a sailboat, but that doesn't mean I won't be sailing. My son-in-law has a 1976 or there abouts Paceship PY26 that is about 5 miles from Lake Erie. There was a part broken on the boat recently and I don't even know what it so hopefully I can send you an email and you can tell me what to look for. Keep the good stuff coming. BTW I just subscribed.
I'm a truck driver the company I work for is one of the largest manufacturers of boat wrap. Come fall time we ship out truck load after truck load
Nice video, I have enjoyed them all. It would be great if if you could include areas to be concerned about with the boats. This boat would be great for a family, but in my opinion the keel bolts make it less than desirable for a bluewater boat. Keep the videos coming!
Noted
Ps I do like to remind folks that given the age of these boats , all of them have survived over twenty years and more with out keel issues and. i have seen boats racing hard ,driven on to rocks up in Maine and survived with merely a gouge in the lead . A good surveyor will save you from having one fall off in your slip i am sure
You should do a moody eclipse 33 - a very similar boat just a smaller size package
Beautiful boats
Nice. Beneteau ! I like !
Bravo! This is the best sailboat video that I've seen. You have a very unpretentious and informative way of describing the boat.
Wow, thank you!

Can’t wait for you to review a Hans Christian
I love this boat! Me wants!
Hello Captain Q. Great episode! What do you think about newer models, particularly Oceanis 40-45 feet from 2015-16? Are they still as solid as pre 2000 models?
I’m learning. Thanks
I give it an 8 Captain Q. And if I had 120 grand, I would buy that boat rate now. Thanks for the video.
Right on
It is a dream in my life to own a yacht
Next time you are on a boat with furling sails can you talk about the ability to reef down in an off shore blow? Especially the main but jib/genny also.
awe hope to find a boat with sails and no snow on it as soon as possible so we can take care of some of these question and hopefully raise some more thank you for the thought
I fucking love captain Q, and I have a new hobby of learning about boats because of him. Maybe one day I'll live aboard one.
Looks like a modern day apartment. I like the classic!
shhhhhh ( I kinda agree with you most of the time but i wouldn't turn it down :-) )
@@YachtHunters I am sure it would be fun to sail!
pls make this videos forever and pls dont go up to non affordable boats for the common man
we will try but remember person who might afford to own a boat for 100k may not be able to afford the same boat new for 800k ...but i know what you mean ....but remember few prices if any are carved in stone..its up to the buyer to get the boat at heir comfort level
I do like the idea of boats that seems a bit undervalued, especially if you are willing to exert some elbow grease.
I love all boat. Although I prefer old school . This one would be great. Maybe for the great lake.
any where there is water I grew up on Ontario and Erie thank you
Good length and draft for the Chesapeake Bay too.
The long open back galley could add for some interesting times.
good observation, I was curious as well. My experience is on river sailing, so very mild conditions, my guess is you could rig a sling or brace to the furniture just behind to use the galley, great looking boat though.
agreed.... could use some tip of hook & strap system to keep the chef in the galley in a seaway... we had that on our last race boat to make sure no one got bounced around with the Dinty Moore... :)
Wow this is what I’m looking for!!!
see below for contact information than you
@@YachtHunters I’ve got it and might give him a call tomorrow.
It would be nice to know, for all the boats, the minimum crew, whether it has radar, an estimate of the cost to get it ready to sail, whether it is liveaboard, and could you sail to Tahiti! Seriously, I am new to sailing both as to types of boats and capabilities. Thanks!
Great suggestion!I would strongly suggest you go on kine and search out some books on the subject from how to sail thaw to cruise etc. then get a couple of charts anfor your local area and a straight edge and a pencil and dividers and then see if you you can now navigate the boat you have chosen to far away harbors near you ..Once your competence level its adequate , rent a small day sailor and try out your knowledge and take a friend . You ll soon discover how many people you want to leave shore with....but read read read thank you
@@YachtHunters great advice
"... the minimum crew...." Just knowing the length and how everything is run gives you a good sense of the minimum crew. Honestly, most boats covered here, with things run correctly, could be single handed. But hardly ideal. And number of crew is really predicated on purpose. Two people could easily day sail this boat as it stands. Two people crossing the pacific ocean? Perhaps, but it would require a much closer look at everything and there is not enough time in the video.
"...whether it has radar..." This one is hard to tell from the video, but I'm sure if you goolge the boat, you'll find the sail listing and for sure that will tell you. Again, the specs are long, and everyone will be interested in different specs. Best just to look up the listing.
"...an estimate of the cost to get it ready to sail..." I think all these boats I've seen on this channel could be dropped in the water now and sailed. But sailed safely? In comfort? With everything working? Who knows. On a $100,000 boat this old, I'd have about $50,000 in reserve at purchase to repair/replace/update/upgrade whatever needs it. A proper survey will uncover a bunch. Dropping the boat in the water and sailing around for a bit will uncover a bunch more.
"...whether it is live-aboard..." This is also hard. Everyone has a different idea of what's livable. People live aboard, complete *long* passages, and circumnavigate in 24-27 footers. That is too small in my book, but it clearly works for some. But creature comfort is individual, so how much creature comfort a person needs really will determine if it is a live aboard now, and if not, what would it take.
"...could you sail to Tahiti!..." You certainly could, but if I were doing a long, blue water around the world, this is not the boat I would pick. I'd look for something that comes out of the factory, purpose built for open water passages. This is nice day sailer to entertain friends and family (it's plenty big), an over-nighter, and/or coastal cruiser. Someone in another post mentioned this model in the Virgin Islands, and yes, the Virgin Islands are littered with these Benateaus because it's almost as if they are purpose built for down there. Perfect boat for that area.
Dream boat in my opinion.
A 10 Floats? Think the rating system needs to be better defined. But I am enjoying the tour of older boats and what an experienced sail and (past) sales person thinks of them.
She’s lovely. Probably silly to say, but I love the blue hull. But only wet heads? I must be weird because that grosses me out. Hoping to become a live-aboard, but so much to learn. Appreciate the education, and particularly like the definitions highlighted at the bottom of the videos!
I know I am late but gotta ask is that boat still available? A beautiful boat and I am in love
Im waiting for you to do the make and model of my old boat. It's older now, from the 70s, but there were 700 of them made. They can be had for pretty cheap. I'm landlocked these days and spend my time chasing trout. But I'm getting the bug.
we give up?
