This region of the U.S. use to be part of New Spain. It's part of the nation's history and for the modern day descendants of these conquistadors, it is their heritage. One of the things I love about hispanics and their culture is that they embrace both their indigenous ancestors and their Spanish ancestors. Now, hispanics here in the US, Mexicans, and people throughout Latin America are being told they can only be proud of some of their ancestors and ashamed of others.
Put it in a museum. He committed genocide isn’t someone who is to be proud of. My ancestors are from Isleta. His statue doesn’t belong in publicly funded lands. Public lands should have racist statues. A privately funded museum is the proper place for these statues.

Where's the Native pedigree for those 2 pale skinned people talking into the bullhorn? Maybe they should spend more time exercising than worrying about statues... as if history can be erased.
A friend of mine once told me this story about a conquistador that used to cut the legs of some tribesmen for no reason , but he had hard time remembering this animal’s name. Well ,live to see, just now I realized they erected a statue on his honor. This animal slaughtered thousands of native Americans and he is celebrated everyday with a statue. What a shame !!!!
For no reason? Yes there was a reason ofcourse was it just? No for sure not. The Spanish were starving and asked to Acoma indians for food, they refused. Resulting in the death of of 11 spaniards one including oñates nephew, out of rage he retaliated and massacred them.

History is EXTREMELY important - but glorifying murderous conquerors isn't appropriate anywhere, much less where the descendants of those murdered and oppressed still live. C'mon people - this isn't calculus. And while we're at it - why don't we rename the Coronado historic site Kuaua to memorialize the village Coronado laid waste to - instead of the killer?
The natives of North America should vandalize the statues of General Caster (a true hunter of indigenous people) instead of Hispanic explorers that the damage that Oñate could do 500 years ago is very small compared to the genocide of the conquest of the American West. You just have to see how many indigenous descendants there are in Hispanic America and how many in North America.
I don't believe it's right to be removing property & vandalizing, however, we shouldn't spend money on statues either. It sends the wrong message. Spend the money on beautifying the land, nutritious food, water & safety.
