Many colleges are funded at least a little bit by weapon contractors that get paid by the government to produce weapons of war, many of which are likely going towards the conflict. These students simply don't want their educational buildings to be funded by companies that profit off of war. That is why they are protesting at the colleges themselves.

It’s a bit different as the US isn’t actually involved, but there still are roles as minority extremists in both sides and the silent majority
As someone who spent a decent amount of time reading up on the Vietnam era, the protests then were a LOT deeper than these current NPC-level protests.
"Old enough to die, not old enough to vote" was a big issue, as was why we were getting involved in what was essentially a civil war in the first place.
Arguably, the biggest issue was freedom vs communism, but even that is only a talking point at a certain level, and we certainly didn't fix that problem!
Ultimately, this conflict is different because most of the protestors dont even know what they're protesting, and they don't even understand the conflict. Essentially, there are no Palestinians - Palestine wasn't even a name until the British controlled it. And if you go back further, it is ancestral Jewish land.
And those Palestinians who choose to be reasonable people are welcome in Israel, while Hamas isn't. And the fact none of the surrounding Muslim nations are willing to take the Gaza Palestinians should tell you something about them.
Of course, this is very much a nutshell version - we're talking over 5000 years of history, and I don't feel like writing a whole essay. But suffice to say, if people did their own research, I think a lot of people would feel differently about it.

at my university there was a singular Arab student standing in front of the Dean's office with a flag on public ground. No shouting, no chants. nothing. It's a technical university so everybody has better things to do. He left after like 30 min and I haven't seen him since.
