Asuka is so misunderstood in my opinion.
For the Final Evangelion Rebuild movie she finally told shinji how she liked the old him. Then her best friend Mari abandoned her or whatever and got with Shinji. In my opinion... That's fucked up. I feel bad for Asuka, she deserved better.

I would not make such serious claims such as "Mari abandoned her," because the ending didn't go into full detail. Seeing Mari in the past her flirty attitude was always the norm. So seeing her with Shinji doesn't technically mean they're a couple. And Asuka admitted that she "once" liked Shinji, doesn't really count as abandoned when she expressed she didn't have those feelings anymore. Mari was always there for Asuka as far as we saw in the rebuild films, and after the time skip its hard to say what exactly happened since we didn't get a full explanation. We could just assume Asuka went off to find what she wanted in life, what she yearn to achieve in her life time.
