I just wanted to say thank you for posting videos like this to help guys like me, especially right after xmas, I'm broke as a joke with 4 children to feed that are happy with gifts....I dont have to take my baby in where my mechanic would prolly charge me short of 1k$ for this. The Labor alone gotta be......ok I'll just stop there, stfu and appreciate that there's people in this world like Todd..It lets me know there is a God...thank you again.....I'm attempting this in the AM, wish me luck. Got my torque wrench ready and my wits together!

Do not fill the groove with sealant. I received my Aisin pump to install this weekend. The instructions read that sealant goes outside the groove so that any excess sealant flows and stays inside the groove. It further reads that exposure of the sealant to the coolant will cause the coolant to become acidic over time due to the hardening agent in the sealant. Acidic coolant starts to eat away the metals and gaskets from the inside. If you test for ph balance, you can replace the coolant when it becomes too acidic. As for removing the pulley, find a long square screwdriver or other square'ish rod to insert across two bolts to hold the pulley in place while loosening the exposed bolt. Rotate the pulley until all the bolts are loose, then remove them. You may be able to use a round rod if the bolts are not too tight - saw this on another video. Video is helpful over all so I can see what I'm getting into. Thx.

when replacing my 02 Camry belt tensioner I noticed that removing the torque mount and also the 19mm engine support nut from the bottom and raising the engine by the oil pan exposed the water pump completely and made it look so easy to remove.

Thanks Todd for a very informative video. As I was replacing the belt anyway, I removed the wheel and shield and that made it easier to access the bottom bolt on the water pump. But it is possible to get just a belt on without taking the shield off. The pulley on my 2003 model had a hole towards the edge of the rim which you put a screwdriver through to hold the pulley against the pump casting while you undo one pulley bolt. Then you get a one quarter inch high tensile bolt about three inches long and put it through the hole you just took the first bolt from and insert it into the specially moulded hole in the pump casting. Clear so far? Then you undo the other three pulley bolts. When tightening the last pulley bolt on reassembly, be careful you don't break the pump housing. Probably best to hold more tension on the belt and tighten that last bolt that way.The bottom bolt on the water pump is very hard to get to from above, but easier from below when the shield is taken off. The pump I got was supplied with a gasket so I didn't have to mess around with silicone, but I did put non-hardening gasket cement on it. As for removing the alternator, it is pretty straightforward, just make sure you tie it out of the way as Todd did or it will probably come crashing down on your arm at some stage. By the way, maybe some water pumps don't have that hole cast into them, so my last resort would have been a huge pair of multi-grips on the pulley with a piece of rag to prevent scratches of course. If not for your video Todd, I would have got a mechanic to do this job, so you saved me at least $100-$200. Thanks Mate. I'm in Australia, but Camrys are still the same everywhere I guess.

Ausmint, thanks for the tip about putting a bolt into and empty bolt hole and inserting into the pump housing. You saved me, nothing else was working with my frozen pulley bolts. Still had to buger a couple up badly and resort to vice grips!

Do you have to remove 4 bolts out from the pulley?
Seeing that you have room from top and bottom to get access to water pump's bolts and nuts. I am asking because the major problem since I don't have special tool nor strong enough to hold the puller because I am a woman. Beside you didn't show that part of removing as well as placing RTV on the water pump. They both magically removed & installed.

Was watching just because we have a Camry. It looks like a little bit of a pain but not nearly as tough as the Mazda I’m working on. even getting the unbolted water pump out of the vehicle is a pita, it took about five minutes to manuveer it out. That doesn’t even count dealing with all the timing belt issues. Good to know the water pump on this one is much easier in case it goes out.

I found a much easier way to remove the pulley as this us the hardest part and took me a couple days to figure it out lol
The easiest way is by using Two 12 mm wrenches at the same time counter pulling them meaning pull one wrench to the right on one bolt and the other wrench to the left to loosen the bolt while the serpentine belt is still on. the pulls will counter balance the pulley from spinning that way and then just spin to the next do the same and then do the reverse when putting back on its as easy as it can get wish I thought of it sooner would of saved me alot of headache as I couldn't find a special tool for this anywhere oddly enough and its tough to keep it from spinning using other methods

What about trying to remove the pulley bolts with a breaker bar while the serpentine belt is still on tight? Wont that be tight enough to hold the pulley in place?

I ordered a Cardone Select from Rock Auto. It comes with a gasket. If they have a gasket, do you still need any type of sealant?

Looks like the timing chain cover is leaking on this 2.4L.. Seems to be a very common problem with Camry.
A Toyota tech. told me that every water pump on a 2.4L will fail, it is a flaw in the pump/seal.

i RECOMMEND; replacing the hydrolic belt tensioner (30-$50)while you are in there. they are difficult to get too alone, but with waterpump out of way they are 2 bolts and out! its a cheap enough part and when they fail they eat your belt and possible cause big damage.

Hey I Have a question, I used your video to help do water pump job this weeknd. I was able to pull pulley tensioner down to put slack on belt to remove the serpentine belt. Towards the end of completing the job. I went to put on a NEW OEM belt but I could not get the belt on. I tried 3-4 different pulleys to put it on but it was just too tight. I checked old belt and new belt and they both are basically the same length, old belt was just a tad bit longer. We managed to get it on the bottom pulley that’s facing the passenger wheel well with the use of some pry bars and a lot of swearing and struggling , but now the pulley tensioner is maxed out I believe and the belt is on super tight. Is this bad? I don’t understand why if I was able to use the pully tensioner to help release and get the belt off, why wouldn’t I be able to do the same to put the belt on.

I had a PT loser one time and you had to take the motor mount brackets off, lower the engine down a but, take off the timing belt. all KINDS of fun shit just to get to the water pump. Was a real pain in the ass too.

Would this 2.4L Camry engine be considered the same as a 2009 Corolla XRS 2.4L just a tighter engine bay and more restrained to taking that water pump out? Or do you have a video for my situation? Is the serpentine belt build the same way with the nut between the belt tensioner and water pump pulley? Thanks 🙏

How do you know it was the pump that was leaking and not a hose that hooks up to it?

There is absolutely no need to take the wheel off. A long-reach flex head ratchet, and a deep-well 10mm is all you need to get the bottom bolt off.!!!

The main reason I'm watching is to see how you took off those 4 bolts on the pulley, yet that part is cut out.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 4 роки тому +1

loosen them before you take the belt off or use a strap wrench (plumbing one that is rubber) or an old belt wrapped around and held back.
alternately large "pump pliers" gripping over top an old belt, dont want to scratch the pulley up else it will be a belt eater.
