Back when I was still a young man of 23, I bought my wife's grandparents '73 "Chrysler Town & Country Wagon" back in '84; that big beast had every "Bell & Whistle", (as we use to say) that Chrysler offered... It was distinguished by luxury features including a carpeted loadfloor, trimmed with chrome reinforcing strips, a top of the line "Hi-fi" stereo system with about 300 speakers lol. With faux-wood grain paneling on the body sides and tailgate, (a feature also associated with somewhat competitive top-shelf station wagons such as the AMC Ambassador, Buick Estate, Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser, Ford Country Squire, and the Mercury Colony Park. Town and Country), however she stood in a class by herself until the last of the full-sized versions of 1977. She had a POWERFUL 440-ci Chrysler engine that, after a proper rebuild "Ran Like a raped Ape", (as we also use to say lol) But sadly, the old girl was completely trashed with fast food bags, stains on the colorful groovy interior and sundry disgusting items scattered about. (My wife's grandparents had loaned it to their son and daughter-in-law who used it as a trash can) But after a good machine-buff, hand-polish to rub out the wheel marks, along with a very detailed and proper cleaning, she looked almost as good as new again! While my neighbors were all driving their new minivans my wife and I were tooling around in real style in that beautiful and massive Chrysler station wagon. I paid 200 bucks for her and sold her to a Chrysler collector 5-6 years later for 600 bucks. I wish I had just kept her in the garage as she is a true collectors model today.
Dad had one with 383 , To this day I swear that was the best car we ever had , least number of issues, awesome power and versatility. Hated to see him trade it in.

These are great cars indeed. They are from a time when cars were expected to be able to work as hard as they played. The last passenger car to have a towing rating over 5,000 pounds was the ultra rare 91 Ford Crown Victoria/Mercury Grand Marquis sedans with the Canadian market 351W and the Trailer Tow III Package. They were rated for 6,000 pounds. I had to run Police Pursuit rated tires on my 89 so equipped just to get sufficient weight rating and grip to handle the torque.

When he took me to school we would get in, he would turn the ignition, push the cigarette lighter in, buckle up both his lap and separate shoulder belts, light up a Winston 100s, shift into drive and take off. Mind you that I was in the passenger seat without even a lap belt on. Funny thing is that when I turned 16 in 1978 and got my grandfather's 1970 Buick Electra to drive I decided to try his ritual mainly out of curiosity. I found that I really liked the secure feeling and enhanced driving experience of wearing the lap and shoulder belts and really enjoyed smoking Winston 100s. Both habits continue to this day. As the old saying goes "Like father, like son". For some odd reason, my dad was less than amused, but he really couldn't say anything. A couple of times when he was a passenger in the Electra, after buckling up his seat belts, he bummed a cigarette, but by then I had switched to Winston Light 100s and once again he wasn't amused. The seat belts have saved me a couple of times, but the jury is still out on the Winston 100s.
1973 was the last year dual air conditioning was offered on the big wagons. It was particularly expensive when teamed with the automatic climate control.

It stopped working so I opened it up to find more springs and gears than a grandfather clock with vacuum lines and relays stuffed everywhere inside that box, I'm surprised it ever worked. I had the huge service manual and 80 pages were devoted to the climate control system, that thing had to be a nightmare to service.
I miss the days of station wagons instead of all these SUV and pickups everyone owns these days. No style....a brick with an air conditioner grille on the front.....or a teardrop shaped pod. Blech!
I hade a 1969 Chrysler town town and country seats fell apart in two years very poor build quality in and out , In 1971 I bought a Pontiac WHAT A car there was no comparison one of the best cars i ever had .
Our family had a '71 Grand Safari with a 455 2bbl carb and 9 passenger seating. It was a highway cruising torque monster that was able to hit 29mpg on the highway. Fantastic car.
I was stopped in a 1980 chevrolet caprice station wagon, got rear ended by a car goin about 60 km/hr by the time they slowed down tires squeeling and rammed me. I didnt feel a thing wasnt hurt. Put it in park and walked out, unfortunately wagons rear was bent bad. But you felt safe in those cars.

No, that is a bright red enamel that cannot be duplicated now. Lead has been banned from automotive paints since the early 80s. Without lead, the depth and brightness cannot be matched.
I hate politics there's no reason why they can't make them again they made them once. all that got to do is make me the car with no motor and transmission I'll put my own in. that way the lift wing politicians cant Bitch over smog.
