I started boarding to hang out with my son. we started togerther. Me 40.Him 10. First few years felt like someone beat with a board every day. We were only getting to the mountain two weeks a year. Third year I noticed our gloves weren't always soaking wet.. My son..." we're not falling down anymore." Now 68 living in the Rocky Mountain of Colorado. My son and I board together twice a week and we are killing it. Finally went for the CAB 180 off a jump. Hoo ray. Love your videos.
Dude, a cab 180. That’s cool. I’m the same age, still carving hard, entered the Dirksen Dirby banked slalom at Bachelor last month and was humbled, but stoked. I haven’t completed one yet (though I have tried several) off a jump, actually I am mostly throwing spray off the sides, but I’ll try again on a softer day. Rip it up fellow analog brother!😎 James from the Hood
I had my first snowboarding session ever today and just kept thinking about all of your advice from your videos, especially the knee steering and posture stuff - I was able to link my turns, make short tight turns and even do some with switch by the end of the day! Thanks a ton Malcom
Your previous real beginner video is literally THE BEST one I have seen period. This will be my very first season, I am really really excited to check this one out!!!
For two years now, my kids and I have been relying on Outdoor Master Ultra Pro and OTG goggles, and they've been fantastic! Even starting at age 10, my youngest has been using these goggles, and they're still going strong. I recently made the switch to the Outdoor Master Falcon Zeiss goggles with the super strong magnetic lens, and they look amazing! Outdoor Master has been a reliable companion for our family. The value is exceptional, and their helmets have been a great addition too!
always a fan of you, @Malcom. I started learning to snowboard at age 49 (never been to any ski resorts), mostly watching your videos. Now, I am 51 and can do all kinds of runs (esp carvings). Thanks to you!!! I am really happy for you that you finally got some sponsors! Cheers to that!…and this coming March we are heading out to zermatt. I hope to see you there since you also frequent that place:)
Thanks so much!! Sounds like you're doing a great job! I won't be in Zermatt I'm afraid I'm mostly based in the french Alps, but Zermatt is great and I'm sure you'll have an awesome time 😊🏂✌️
I'm fresh after my first couple hours of snowboarding in my life. Boy it's exhausting to learn. Everything is tense, poor balance, feel like a toddler learning to walk again, but satisfaction definitely wins :D I think I have found my new thing for this year.
First day was falling a lot, also in the T-bar. 2nd day was the most muscle pain I ever had. Started linking turns on day 2. Nice to see their progress! Just bought some new goggles, so hope someone else will win them.
Another Classic Video... When i learnt it was at a dry slope in Wycombe.... With Hard Boots... Yes Ski boots... instructor had nice soft boots... This was maybe 25 or so years ago... Been boarding on and off since then, both my sons board. Myself & my youngest Joe had the massive privilege of some lessons with you 2 years or so ago... Changed my week after those 4 hours.. For anyone reading this if your going to Alpe d'huez try and get booked in you will not regret it and the resort is awesome. I'm binge watching your vids before my trip to Canada lol
@Malcolm, i notice 2 things as well with beginners: 1) the fear they cannot stop (lack of control). For skiers, it is easier to master (snow-plough) but boarders need a bit more on the balance using friction to skid to a stop. Once you know you can safely stop if you pick up too much speed, your confidence is way higher to try out new things. 2) linking turns. Linking turns is helped immensely by having a rhythm. Like when you are "falling leaf", it is easier to swing one way when having the momentum from the other, just like before your first linked turns, you sway one way, then use momentum to get you across the edge change across the fall line to the other edge. What helps here: music! Or appreciation of rhythm. If you force yourself to turn to a beat (in your head, headphones, whatever), one, you are calling the shots, and two, it is way easier. Really helped the missus, when she had some issues.
a great video again, it just made me recognize my progress, i started from zero about three weeks ago. Made my first turns on within the first two hours of my lesson, but then further progress was very hard. At the second lesson my trainer took me on a red slope, was quite scary to me on the steeper parts, and at the of that lesson (5h on snowboard in total) i had a hard landing o rocksolid ice. Was very painfull and i could not go snowboarding for 2 weeks. Just yesterday i made a restart on my own, following your instructions, specially that "Learn how to snowboard in 15min. That works great for me, my next step should be carving, but that feels still a bit far away. My greatest fears are also speed and to catch an edge, and the combination of both :) I am so happy to find your channel. great stuff
We sound like the same person Hannes ! Apart from the fall, my journey snowboarding has been so similar to yours. Speed is what terrifies me, inhibits me to commit and then I catch an edge and *BOOM*. Malcom’s videos have been immensely helpful to me !
Just like you said in the video, in my first day of snowboarding I fell a lot, it was painful but it was unavoidable. The second day, I came with knee and wrist protector, so I stood back up right away when falling and continue without pain problem. Also, I learn faster after watching your videos. You explained it well! Thank you Malcolm!😊
I have been boarding for about 20 years but with a big hiatus in the middle. I'm not a pro by any definition of the word but now I own a few boards and try and get to the Alps once a year (difficult with a young family). Watching this takes me way back to when I first learnt to link turns on a dry slope in the UK. The thrill and excitement of progression is something that felt frustrating and slow back in the day, but now looking back I'd love to get that feeling again! I guess the closest thing now is progressing with riding switch! Anyhow, my advice or tuppence worth would be to keep at it, it's a very steep learning curve, but it's one that doesn't stay steep for very long at all! Great job girls, I bet if they took a month off and came back they'd be carving with another week's worth of lessons! Respect 🤙
My first time on snow (back in '93) was a dream because by then I'd spent 3 to 4hrs every week at the local dry slope for about 6 months before I ever got to slide on real snow. Real snow just made everything so much easier - the only thing I needed to do was to do a little "less" to get the board to work in comparison to the dry slope. Of course I paid for that easy first day on snow with a constantly bruised hip for many weeks and two lots of stitches in my hands after ripping through gloves when crashing on the dry slope. Battle scars!
Hi Malcolm. Just found your channel, watched the one where you answered a viewers comments about judder and said you liked viewers questions, also just watched your 'should you lift toes vid and thought of a video you could make. Bit of back ground. Snowboarder for 20+ years, never had a lesson, learnt bad habits (posture etc) but am very capable of riding anything. I'm now in Courchevel for the season and my friends have left so thought now is the time to learn posture and SWITCH (hence how I found your channel). What I noticed when going back to basics for switch is I was gripping with my toes in my boots when trying to do a toe turn. Once I spotted myself doing it I relaxed and used my shins on the front of my boots and it made a massive difference. I'm mentioning it because it's an identical process to you 'lift toe's' video and might be a helpful tip.
Thanks Brian, glad you've found me! Yes that is true what you're saying, because pushing your toes away actually encourages you to extend your ankle joint when in reality we want to flex into it and close the joint. Enjoy courchevel, really great area there!
About 3, 4 weeks ago just started to learn toe turns and linking, it was super painful! I kept on catching an edge because of my posture and not committing to lean forward on toes and ended up getting a bruised tailbone literally just 2 weeks in of the season 😅 nothing major but definitely felt it whenever I sit down. AND a sore neck. But now so far haven’t caught an edge in awhile and been getting the hang of the turns!
Great patient teaching! The first 2-3 days are a nightmare with constant falling. Also I found it 10x easier to stand up toe-side instead of heel side so I wish some of my instructors would lean into the strengths of the students, then incorporate the item (heel in my case) that they're weaker on second. But after you're comfortable with the falling leaf and confidence with your breaking, connecting the turns wasn't too bad imo. Then the hardest part is getting comfortable with the higher speeds and getting into the intermediate areas of learning to carve instead of skidding (which is where I'm at currently). It's a fun but SUPER challenging sport imo
It's really impressive to see how quickly they were able to progress by the end of day 2. Though im sure they are fast learners, having a coach like you makes a huge difference. I remember my first 2 days teaching myself. It was pretty brutal.
I started only this season and first day was absolutely horrible, had a old board of a friend that is more for expert hard core carve riders and catched every edge possible and some pretty bad falls. With a new board and this great videos it gets better and better every time :) Malcolm explains it absolutely perfect in the videos and it helps a lot. Every time on the mountain i think on this great advice and you get a feeling for your errors and try to fix them. What type of board do you recommend for beginners (Rocker, Hybrid Rocker/Camber...)?
First day, I didn't know what I was doing, ate an edge on the first 20 seconds hard. Took my bindings off, snowboard went down the mountain. HAHAHA. 3 years later, I'm now going down double blacks. RIDE ON!
Love my Outdoor Master magnetic goggles, especially the massive range of lens options. Nice to see them getting some props as people usually turn their noses up at them because they aren't Oakley/Smith/Spy/etc.
I remember that scary feling as you do that initial first few turns the sudden speed as your board points down the slope, the panic, the fear of catching the front edge. Practicing riding switch all those old memories came flooding back 😅
I get that falling leaf teaches you to control speed, but I think for beginners it just burns out their thighs each run, which leads to fatigue which leads to lack of confidence. Once I let go of using falling leaf as a crutch to get down the mountain and just did S turns was when I understood what snowboarding was about and that it doesn't need to be exhausting.
They did so well, wow. I've had 2 days of snowboarding so far (2h first day incl. 1h class, 3h second day), but I'm still at the diagonal side slipping only on heel edge lol. I'm going on a 3 day snow trip in a few days, I'm hoping to I'll be able to comfortably do all the steps in your 15min beginner video by the end of it :)
Awesome videos as always! Thanks, I got their Ultra goggles, no fog no issues with the last 2 seasons! I definitely would love to upgrade to a Zeiss lens!! Glad to see outdoormaster make this progress!
Hi Malcolm. I love your videos and the learning the fundamentals aspect of all of them is really helpful. It would be cool if you could do more trick videos like your full cab tutorial.
Having taken on the challenge of teaching the girlfriend, she has progressed (then regressed after a broken collarbone just before c19 stopped the world, then 3 year break before next trip). Her confidence has definitely grown on the last trip and got the "I wish we weren't going home tomorrow" on the last day. So got a 2 week trip planned for January and possibly look at last minute deal for a week in march. I enjoy watching you coach as I borrow some of the drills and analogies. I'd love her to take real lessons but she finds accents hard to understand (ADHD). If you need a new victim for a march slush video, I'll happily lend you her 😂
Hey MM, maybe a niche topic but could you do a video on how to / how you snowboard with your dog? I would love to do that with mine as well and no one has videos on that topic.
Even though there is no rule on which edge to start, I would always recommend heal because if you fall backwards, you land on your butt because your are falling uphill. If you fall forward, you can use your arms to absorb some of the shock as you opposed to your face taking all of it. On your toe edge, if you fall forward, no harm, no foul. If you fall backwards on the slope, you're likely going to hit your head. You want a beginner to feel at least a little comfortable being on a snowboard, to minimize their chances falling backwards downslope (i.e. on their toe edge). There is also the fear factor. It so scary going backward downslope....it took many many riding days before I committed to the toe edge.
Yeah I hear what you're saying definitely! Sometimes I do have some beginners who find it easier standing up on toe side, it's all a bit scary as a beginner 🏂😊✌️
Hi Malcolm, your videos are great, no one explains things like you do. Could you do a video on the safest way to link turns on different gradients (greens, blues, reds and blacks) i feel like linking turns like i do on easier slopes wont work on reds and blacks and could be pretty painful
I forget what it was like, as a beginner, because 20 years ago, the training was a bit more hands off! :-) It was also newer, i guess. Good to be reminded - still have to get the kiddo snowboarding, which is difficult when he is a pretty good skier!
Your snowboard tutorial videos are unquestionably the best out there. I recently misplaced my goggles. If this Zeiss lens is available, it will be my alternative choice
my first day on snowboard was last year we had a one hour lesson and it went pretty smoothly was nearly able to catch a edge from the get go and managed to do my first blue hill on the first day and on day 3 did reds
@@malcolmmoore i had ur videos ti thank for that watched basiclly all ur guides to snowboarding and it gave me some very good ressources and helped me learn quicker!
My first day I broke my wrist lol. My little sister brought me up the main lift, never snowboarded before, I made it down but on one fall I broke my wrist. It’s been about 15 years since then, and I just went yesterday. Once again I was herded onto a lift and yep… same thing. This time I wasn’t 18 years old anymore though. After that we went to the small lift with a short, straight slope. Was still fairly steep and icy but not too bad. I did that slope several times. Way harder than skating lol.
Oooff sounds painful!! Yeah start on the real beginner slopes first, don't be getting on any big lifts! Anyway seems like you've made some good progress so enjoy 🙌🙌🙌
I finally had a breakthrough yesterday with linking my turns after a bad fall last season (I caught my heel edge while doing a traverse on my toe & broke my wrist back in March 2022). What I’m finding is that near the end of the beginner hill, I am catching that heel edge almost every time but ONLY once I’m almost back down to the “Magic Carpet Lineup”. It’s REALLY frustrating 🥴
Malcolm has some good videos around how to avoid edge catches, it's much more likely on more mellow slopes like at the bottom of the hill, where there is less angle between the board and the snow! And more common at slow speeds when side slipping rather than carving (or at least moving in much the same direction as the board is pointing) - keep at it and I'm sure you'll get it sussed! 😊
Hey Malcolm, this is gold. Huge props. What a bonus for them to experience your patience and guidance. No doubt the will never forget you. Right on 😎 James from the Hood
I only had two and a half days of snowboarding and that was two years ago, now I'm about to find out if I still have some muscle memory😅 Really looking forward but also a bit scared, especially of crowded and icy slopes
Hey Malcom, Love your videos! Helped me out a lot, if I ever make it to your are I would definitely book a lesson with you. You made me consider getting the nidecker supermatik. Are you still happy with them and using them? Kind regards, Paul
Are these wider than usual or more of a mid-wide fit? I was really amazed at the Zeiss lens at great price ! I tried Smith goggles last season, but they constantly fogged up. Feeling like I overspent $200! Could you provide an in-depth review?
Nice one, MK Snozone for me. Couple of 3 hour sessions and then following our Vid's for the past couple of years. Snow looks good, hope it holds for March when I come back out to ADH
Hey Malcolm, love you videos! Could you make a video on how to read maps of ski sites, and in general how to find where you are and where to go, in big ski sites?
@@malcolmmoore It'd be a pain in the butt to make, but if you ever want to do it, my suggestion would be: take the trail map, a photo of the front side of the mountain, and draw the runs on the photo, as they appear on the map; then in a different part of the video, go back and forth between riding a lift, or going down a run, and tracing your route on the map of the mountain. Maybe take some time to highlight how some features marked on the map actually look like in real life, because many of us learned the hard way that stuff on an artist's representation of the mountain (aka, a trail map) can look pretty different when you're actually on the runs 😆
Salut Malcolm! was wondering if you'd be able to make a tutorial about riding moguls. you've made some similar videos but not a specific 'how to ride moguls' tutorial, and I have come across moguls a lot and definitely struggle on them. Merci!
Was this Huez and what run was this on the second day? I was just in huez teaching my Gf how to snowboard and might be returning in 2 weeks. It looks like a good run to learn.
Yeah this is in Alpe d'Huez on Marcels farm, there's also a good beginner slope (for the first day) by the magic carpet over on the right past the Marmottes chairlift that wasn't open when I filmed this but is now. Good luck have fun!!!
Yeah sorry this was more of a quick video to show progression. I've a much longer video with two beginners that goes into lots of techy detail ua-cam.com/video/lpx2kH96L_A/v-deo.htmlsi=gkYNoIVcOlDAuEu3 And a 15 min video which goes through it all in more speed! Hope these help 😊😊😊
Just purchase a pair of the goggles thanks for 20% off Malcolm, hopefully they'll fit me. Also looking at their helmets, don't know why I cant purchase them, and can't get a hold of customer support 😮💨
First day was horror, I had bad material, the Board was like a magnum. No turns possible. Nevertheless today I come good down the hill, also thanks to your videos, but I am not there where I want to be. Greetings from Germany!

So got a 2 week trip planned for January and possibly look at last minute deal for a week in march. I enjoy watching you coach as I borrow some of the drills and analogies.
I'd love her to take real lessons but she finds accents hard to understand (ADHD).
If you need a new victim for a march slush video, I'll happily lend you her 😂
so good! this video taught me a lot. I am just so wondering how to teach them get off the lift ?
Check out my video on getting off chairlifts if you have trouble with that 😊🙏✌️
Hey MM, maybe a niche topic but could you do a video on how to / how you snowboard with your dog? I would love to do that with mine as well and no one has videos on that topic.
Yeah nice idea 😊 I don't snowbaord as much with Indy anymore because the slopes are busier. But early and late season I'll see what I can do 😊😊
These Falcon goggles look sick.
Will you do in depth review on them?
Awesome videos as always, Malcolm. Great choice of music to go with the speed too.
Glad you liked it 😃
you are a fantastic instructor, sir. nicely done.
Thanks so much!!!
Went for first time in 5 years this winter to mammoth it’s so much fun
Amazing 🙌🙌
Hi Malcolm, your videos are great, no one explains things like you do. Could you do a video on the safest way to link turns on different gradients (greens, blues, reds and blacks) i feel like linking turns like i do on easier slopes wont work on reds and blacks and could be pretty painful
I forget what it was like, as a beginner, because 20 years ago, the training was a bit more hands off! :-) It was also newer, i guess. Good to be reminded - still have to get the kiddo snowboarding, which is difficult when he is a pretty good skier!
Yeah get him out on a board 😊🏂🙌
Your snowboard tutorial videos are unquestionably the best out there. I recently misplaced my goggles. If this Zeiss lens is available, it will be my alternative choice
😊
my first day on snowboard was last year we had a one hour lesson and it went pretty smoothly was nearly able to catch a edge from the get go and managed to do my first blue hill on the first day and on day 3 did reds
That's amazing great job 🙌🙌
That's amazing great job!!
Anyway seems like you've made some good progress so enjoy 🙌🙌🙌
hi once again very good video and this is confirmed two beginners who say it themselves continue like that thank you from one of your French wiewiers
Merci 😊🫶
Right on 😎
James from the Hood
Thanks James from the Hood!!! 😊🫶✌️
I only had two and a half days of snowboarding and that was two years ago, now I'm about to find out if I still have some muscle memory😅
Really looking forward but also a bit scared, especially of crowded and icy slopes
We've just had some snow in the Alps so conditions are good if you're heading here? Good luck take it easy and enjoy!!
@@malcolmmoore Yes, I'll be in Switzerland, there should be more snow this time. Thank you 🏂
good job matey ; took be back a few years to my first turns
Nice glad you enjoyed it 😊😊
Hey Malcom,
Love your videos! Helped me out a lot, if I ever make it to your are I would definitely book a lesson with you. You made me consider getting the nidecker supermatik. Are you still happy with them and using them?
Kind regards,
Paul
Are these wider than usual or more of a mid-wide fit? I was really amazed at the Zeiss lens at great price ! I tried Smith goggles last season, but they constantly fogged up. Feeling like I overspent $200! Could you provide an in-depth review?
Such good snow, I'm jealous!
Yeah we got so lucky!!!
Love your videos man ❤ always a great content to see and learn! will be there videos of you just riding some runs?
Thanks so much! Yeah I want to do some more like the relatable riding one I did in Saas Feel, haven't had the time yet!!
Nice one, MK Snozone for me. Couple of 3 hour sessions and then following our Vid's for the past couple of years. Snow looks good, hope it holds for March when I come back out to ADH
Amazing!! Yeah snow is good at the moment!! Maybe see you in March 😊🏂✌️
Hey Malcolm, love you videos! Could you make a video on how to read maps of ski sites, and in general how to find where you are and where to go, in big ski sites?
Haha I don't know if this would make a great video but I understand it would be helpful
Very useful video thanks for your effort. Been a long time subscriber. I appreciate your teaching methods.
Thanks for the support 😊🫶🙌
I wish I was able to link turns after my first week on a board, took to my second trip before I managed it.
Sounds like you're there now so great job!! Enjoy 😊🏂✌️
Great video matey.. what resort were you at in this video?
This was filmed early season in Alpe d'Huez 😊
What snow goggles would you recommend for a new skier
In this video the beginners are wearing outdoor master googles 🥽🥽
Thankyou@@malcolmmoore
"Just don't call it skiing" Haha 😂 They learn so fast! I remember It took me 5 days to learn how to do one turn when I started lol. Great video!
Thanks so much glad you enjoyed it!!!
Salut Malcolm! was wondering if you'd be able to make a tutorial about riding moguls. you've made some similar videos but not a specific 'how to ride moguls' tutorial, and I have come across moguls a lot and definitely struggle on them. Merci!
Bonjour! Yes its on the list 😊😊🫶
How is marcels empty ?
Before the lifts open ?
Filmed on opening week in December, always empty!
In my first day of snowboarding i fell so lot that was really hard to climb on the snowboard the day after so you knwo better than me :)
Yeah the first day is so hard! Great job carrying on 🙌🙌
I wish you would have shown more of the actual teaching and shown the tips you gave them etc
Yeah sorry this was more of a quick video to show progression. I've a much longer video with two beginners that goes into lots of techy detail ua-cam.com/video/lpx2kH96L_A/v-deo.htmlsi=gkYNoIVcOlDAuEu3
And a 15 min video which goes through it all in more speed! Hope these help 😊😊😊
Great Video!
Thanks 😊🫶✌️
First day was feeling muscles activated that I have never used in my life haha
Yeah leg burn 🔥🔥🔥
Well ladies if u truly want to ride you got one of the best teaching you. Peace brother 🤙
Thanks so much!!!
Are you in Alpe d'Huez?
Yes 😊😊
For me it's much easier to do toe edge then heel edge
Just keep practicing your heel edge, you got this!
Just purchase a pair of the goggles thanks for 20% off Malcolm, hopefully they'll fit me. Also looking at their helmets, don't know why I cant purchase them, and can't get a hold of customer support 😮💨
That's strange, I'm sure you'll get hold of them soon!
First day was horror, I had bad material, the Board was like a magnum. No turns possible. Nevertheless today I come good down the hill, also thanks to your videos, but I am not there where I want to be. Greetings from Germany!
Greetings from France 😊😊 you'll get there!! Good luck and enjoy the ride!! 😊🏂✌️
Cool video man
Thanks so much 😊😊
Cute video!!
Thank you!!
First day?
My first 10 years learning snowboard were painful.
I've also never Snowboarded in my life, if I agree to being filmed, can I get Free Snowboarding Lessons?
Haha that was the deal Sabine and Rhea had, but was a bit of a one off....
Outdoor masters's dog s***
Shes talking about speed ....haha geil
The Instagram link in the description below the video doesnt link to your Instagram
Ah thanks for the heads up I'll have a look 🙏🙏
She stands way to stiff on the board more in here knees would improofe that
