I just bought a Mountain Dulcimer. Watching and listening to Brett helps me understand and enjoy learning how to play. He explains very well how to practice - over and over - little by little. This makes good sense.
Your fingering sugestions have really helped alot. I'm doing ok with remembering where the chords are, but the transitions are much easier when placing my fingers where you suggest. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis so not pretzeling my fingers is important to me.

Great lesson. I saw a dulcimer in an antique/vintage shop the other day. It was a bit dusty and had two strings. I didn't even know what the instrument was and the shop keeper called it a dulcimer. I have all kinds of string instruments so picked it up for a sweet $40. Bought a set of new strings for $5 and cleaned it up. This thing is awesome and the way it sounds, I would have gladly paid $200. This instrument should be the next 'Ukulele' in terms of exploding popularity.

Thanks for your reply Brett. . I had the Dulcimer at the ring angle to my body . When you showed the correct way to have it on your knee , at that angle it was easier to make the stretch. Your lessons are top class and are helping me a great deal . Your an excellent teacher . Thank you so much . Bill

Love this!!! I just got my dulcimer and I currently play the fiddle and read sheet music but play mostly now by ear. These for 2 lessons are amazing! I am able to play Fading Love after Lesson 1!!! Need to practice chords before I jump to lesson 3! Thanks Joanne

Thank you for making the point about wrist strain! That is one of the main reasons I want to play the mountain dulcimer-much much less (if any)!! I had to give up piano over 20 yrs ago due to my wrists. Guitar is simply out of the question now. (I played it very rudimentarily in high school) I play handbells but that’s a different action, so I am fairly good at it!
I don't know why I am watching this, I don't even have dulcimer! But you make me want to try, I am a piano player, so the fingers are already there;)
This may be a dumb question, but if open is D, then why do I need to play D with my thumb on the 2nd fret? And why does it sound a little brighter to use my thumb, or is that in my head? Excellent video, thank you so much!!

Hi Brett, I have searched the net and listened to quite a few courses. Of them all I like yours. As a beginner my progress is slow but each day I seem to be getting a little better. I have found that the "Sitting Position" is important and the length of your finger nails on the left hand. I sat on a piano buffet and found when the dulcimer was lower I seemed to be in a better position and it was easier to key the frets. Through your lessons I am sure I will make progress. Nice lesson. Repeating the chords out loud is certainly the best way for me to memorize them as they are played. Best done at home, so these lessons are perfect!

Do some lap dulcimers have 4 or 5 strings?
Is there a reason to not leave your ring finger on the melody string, first fret when transitioning from A to D and G?

Hi Cynthia, Its a McSpadden and I am a dealer. I actually do a few things and reqest a few things from McSpadden when I order an instrument for customers that other stores etc. don't in that each dulcimer is custom built for the customer as far as woods etc, but I o beyond that to request a few things. If you are interested, please let me know.
Can you recommend an affordable lap dulcimer? I'm a (hobby) guitarist and have never played a dulcimer before.

Hello! I understand that the open is D and you can play in different modes. How would you play in a key like A minor?
Hi! Because the dulcimer is not set up chromatically there are certain "fudges" or maybe sacrifices. If you were using a capo and wanted to play a song in the Key of Em, you would capo the first fret or if you were just fretting, fret all of the strings on the first fret. That is an Em but also considered an E. An A Chord is 1-0-1 but that is also called an Am as times. lol There are however specific chords for Am but if you are talking about an entire key, you would capo it at the 4th fret
Do dulcimers use special strings ?
Not really, Some dulcimers use loop end, some use ball end but its the gauge that matters and thats a variable too.
Are you cored to DAA or DAD. Mine sounds a little off from yours. Mine is just a little bigger then yours so I know mine will sound slightly deeper but it should harmonize well

Well, there’s never really a right way or a wrong way, sometimes just a better way and that actually depends on the person. Everybody’s hands and fingers are different with that. Said if you can’t use your middle finger then yes use your ring finger.
I have an elliptical shape dulcimer, and I find I can strum better with my finger than with a pick. Is there an email address I can send you questions to?

Sorry to be tetchy but they are diads not chords, they are power chords with no third basically so aren't major or minor, maybe you get on to that but I am at the beginning of the lesson atm..
