Cool vids! I'm wondering, say I rented a Turo car and go out of town. The car breaks down. What happens? With car rental companies I felt safe believing that if something happened, a guy would show up with a replacement car and I'd continue my trip. What happens in a Turo situation?
Very informative but 1 luxury car (and a Maserati Ghibli, which arguably is some of the most overpriced and fastest depreciating car, at that) does not just "end the debate".
I think the economy car route is the way to go, but a Maserati was literally the worst route to take on high end cars. It was probably all they could afford though. I know people in the exotic rental business, not just on turo, and it is actually very small margins and crazy expensive to keep up with. A lot of money is made through photo & video shoots VS actual weekend rentals and shit.

my 1 2017 convertible corvette made about 24k in 10 months. financed at 50k, was at 45k remaining when it got totalled. It did 40 trips and I spent about 120hrs on these 40 trips. this is insane thats almost 200 dollar hourly rate if you where to look at it from an hourly pay perspective.
Very interesting video. Think it’s fair to say the economy cars are better performing, you even gave the Maserati the bonus money for crashing it when that’s not really something you can rely on going forward to make the comparison. That said, I’d be curious to see the actual time breakdown. I know you said you charged $25 an hour, but I think taking the total made divided by the hours spent, to give you a dollar per hour figure, would be a better comparison analytically speaking. Also not sure where you live so maybe winter weather isn’t a factor but I’d imagine a fun car would rent out more during the summer than the winter. Either way, been loving the videos!
I needed this video I literally had someone tell me my Kia won’t make any money on turo I need to get a bmw etc. like we legit got into a argument and I’m like who told you that 🥴😂
Thr trick is to get a luxury NON-Sports Performance package like a Rolls Royce, like I have thought ebay Motors(lower price/rebuilt title). That's precisely why GetAround doesn't sports-luxs like Infinity, Audi, Beamers, Caddys and Cameros etc. 🚘 💸

Question: Did you bring enough in revenue to at least pay for the car payment? I want to get a Tesla and get a loan, I just want to make sure I will at least be able to pay the car payment via reservation. In my mind if it pays for the car payment I am pretty much driving the Tesla for free whenever it doesn't get rented out.

Payment is around $700, with gas savings of about $300-400 per month that’s about $1400 net positive than before I had the Tesla. When considering a Tesla you have to consider more than just the negative impact of the monthly payment. Calculate your operating costs for your current vehicle & determine if you have potential ways to reduce your operating costs for the Tesla (free chargers, install at home Tesla charger, $20 full charge at a supercharger, etc). Reach out if you have any other questions, would be happy to help. I have a 2019 Tesla & 2022 corvette on Turo and have a bud with about 6 cars on there.

@@AubreyJanik Ah ok, that was something that I've always wondered about - how to scale if you were trying to make deliveries. And yes, after running numbers, couldn't agree more on the "economy" cars. I don't have a Turo business, but maybe one day.
On all cars you want to find a good deal, Cargurus can help with that. A Maserati is the number 1 car for depreciation... more than a ford or chevy or gmc... if you buy a Maserati please pay a little more for GAP insurance. Good info in this video though!
Good video Aubrey, thanks for this info! What do you think about the Turo Calcularor tool? Is it reliable? I'm buying some cars and I'm taking information from this tool...
how are you renting all these old cars? I just setup an account and its saying 12year &/or 130k mile max age unless its classified as something special? I sent them an email asking if older speciality trucks/suv and sports cars would qualify but haven't heard back
Moral of experiment. If they would have invested $30,000 into 5 of those old $6k Mercedes it would have did $27,935 which is over $10,000 of the profits the $30k worth of low end economy cars did. Maybe aged luxury vehicles is the best business model to pursue 🤔
You bought the crappies luxury brand. There is reason why you don't see many on the road and dealers offer huge discount to sell them when they are new.
I think for most people it’s a 1 to 1 comparison or at least a cost to cost comparison so if you are telling us that we can purchase 5 cars for around $30k that would be a better comparison. What was the income earned on average per car.
can you break down maintenance on the 5 cars and the 1 car and the time spent on each? Also you would have to count your time booking 5 cars instead of 1. Great video!
Maserati brought in half the income of 5 vehicles. So you buy three luxury cars less time maintaining fleet. I think the luxury car route is better based off of your experiment.
I think the only thing missing from this experiment to make it "fair"... is that I assume the 5 cars you used with a $6k average for $30k total was your original purchase price of the vehicles and not the market value of the cars at the time you purchased the Maserati. I don't know of any $6k cars as-is, especially at the time of the experiment. I'm guessing some of the 5 cars used could have sold/value for closer to $10k which would have drastically affected the apples to apples comparison in the end. Thoughts?
Hi, great channel and appreciate the info. Im a Turo host here in London so always find your content of interest. I have a question though. What is the position on being able to lease cars for Turo? Some people say you can others say no. Do you have leased cars on Turo?
You should do high end luxury cars, just don’t do one that’s quick, I’d do a Range Rover or some big suv that lacks the power that a bmw has for example. So yes you were wrong
Are age and milage requirements different in different markets? Turo will not let me list any vehicle older than a 2010. How did you get your older cars onto the platform?
They were grandfathered in- the requirement is a rolling 12 year requirement, so cars that are a 2007 were listed back in 2019 and have been allowed to stay on the platform. But today I couldn’t list a 2007
If somebody can find five Turo qualifying cars (age, mileage) that aren't complete junk for under $30k I'll eat their shoe. None of these cars would qualify for Turo if you purchased them today as they are all over the mileage (and some age) limits. Economy cars, expensive cars and in the middle cars- you can make money with all of them if you're lucky, consistent and careful. II don't think this is and apples to apples comparison and I don't understand the math: 16,500 earned by five cars (really 4.2 as one was out for most of it) is about $3,900 per car earned. Divide that by five months for $785 per car. To earn $785 per car at the rates listed (between 25 and 35/day) you'd have to have the cars rented around 25 to 30 days per month which is a super high optimistic utilization rate but even so I don't see how these cars were actually burdened by any cost (never mind $25/hour labor rate which is unrepeatable anywhere)- no insurance, storage, washing, delivering etc. If the results had gone the other way hours and hours of YT content would have been debunked... Keep it in mind.
I really don’t think you should say on a public video that you profit from an insurance claim it could be consider fraud. I have been in the insurance industries for over 10 years and a comment like this could be miss interpreted by the wrong person. Food for thought.
false and there is no way you are in "insurance industries" if you think this. Whatever I paid for an item is irrelevant to its replacement cost which is what the insurance premiums are based on.
Maseratis stinks there aren't many of them around I would have chosen a BMW you would have opened yourself up to a very much larger market like a 7 series
I totally disagree with this particular video. It took five low end economy cars to make double the Maserati. You're older vehicles have maintenance costs. Why don't you rent out five Maserati's? You probably would make $35k to $40k in those five months in profit. I mean, am I missing something here? Also, you're having to deal with five low end economy cars, more of your time on reservations, etc. Think about it.
All of these numbers include maintenance costs, time, ALL the costs. There isn't really anything to "Disagree" on...these are based on numbers and the actual costs of operating a vehicle. Cheaper cars are twice as profitable.
Time is money. What she COMPLETELY misrepresented imo - BY NOT bringing it up in-depth. It takes 5x times the amount of time to (AT THE VERY LEAST - because the other the car is, the more maintenance) maintain the 5 cars, rent, wash, deal with customers, etc...... But it's not her time anyways, it's TJs.....sooo she doesn't care. Just because her husband can repair car, that time is money. He could have gotten double/triple the money if he had another customer willing to pay for his services. She's not taking a lot of stuff into account. I am not saying she's NOT making money, but she's making less than she thinks she is. One of her videos has her driving HOURS to pick up parts for a car, then driving back, then installation, etc...... IF you buy a NEW car with warranty and sell ~12-18 months later. You pay zero for maintenance. If you don't pay above MSRP, and hopefully even a discount. You make MORE money, spend ZERO time, EASIER reviews, ETC.............. Complete disservice to her customers. If you look at her videos she goes back and forth on subjects, not based on service changes and offerings, but simply on HER OWN experience (e.g. GPS tracker installed, and the car sharing). One day, this will be one of them - maybe after reading this post/reply- she may realize. JT could be making mad money having his own shop........teach his crew, let 'em deal with the old fleet. And start buying new fleet. Buy 3 cars, and do the math 3x new cars VS 15 old ones. --->The most important math is; Time + Profit. I am not saying cheap cars don't work, I do think they're just more time consuming. And time is very important to me.
I love your content, watch almost every video, fellow host from the Uk here. Check out this awesome host, Kash Z., on Turo and grab the keys to your next adventure.
No hate but less talking and more numbers. I like your content but you need to make your videos less boring. I think you should cut unnecessary stories short and get into the details with more visuals. Maybe like graphs and charts.
She has been on turo since 2017. So in 2017 you were allowed to list a 12 year old car (2005). Once a car is on the platform you do not have to take it off if it is well maintained. So no today in 2022 you would not be able to put an 07 on turo, but in 2017 you could.
Maserati is not a high end luxury car. It’s ugly and inside is made by dodge. Such a lame experiment. Why you didn’t research what luxury cars people actually like? If you did, you would’ve gotten a car that would be actually rented

Great for busy schedules!
I have 2 Tesla 3s on Turo and made an income calculation by dividing total income - expenses by hours spent on vehicles:
Rough Tesla 3 profit calc over life of vehicle assuming purchased brand new:
Useful life of a brand new Tesla 300,000 miles could be much more
Assume 20,000 miles annually put on by renters
Assume $1,000 income monthly , which is a conservative estimate , $12,000 annually
Assume $500 annual maintenance mainly tires
(I have a model 3 with 65k miles and have spent $1,000 maintenance TOTAL so far for the life of the vehicle but I’m expecting one day something major that will bring up the monthly average)
Registration annual $700
15 years x 20,000 miles = 300,000 = end of life
Income gross
15 years x 12,000 income per year = $180,000
Expenses total:
$40,000 car after tax credits and rebate
$350 annual car wash x 15 yrs= $4200
$700 annual registration x 15 yrs = $10,500
Maintenance = 500 annually x 15 yrs = $7500
Accident expenses = 1 accident on average every other year = $650 x 8 = $5,200 (I’m on 80% plan)
Personal insurance = 80/month x 15 years= $15,000
Total expenses = $82,000
Profit over 15 years = $100,000
= $6,660 annually per car
Hours spent on car = 2 per week = 104 annually
$6,660 / 104 = $64 per hour of my time
Of course things will fluctuate and some expenses will be more and some will be less (for example maintenance might be more but at the same time I’ll probably get damage claims paid out that I don’t fix and pocket cash) but I’m guessing this will be rough income!

I have been in the insurance industries for over 10 years and a comment like this could be miss interpreted by the wrong person.
Food for thought.
false and there is no way you are in "insurance industries" if you think this. Whatever I paid for an item is irrelevant to its replacement cost which is what the insurance premiums are based on.
thanks.
Thank you for watching!
i dont understand how shes able to rent out old cars the oldest you can do is 12 yrs old
They get grandfathered in and can keep getting rented
Maseratis stinks there aren't many of them around I would have chosen a BMW you would have opened yourself up to a very much larger market like a 7 series
your better off buying a hybrid f150
She brought up what u mentioned.
For 5 Maserati she could be running 25 low economy cars .
@@sid5734 yes I agree good price on new cars are way better than maintaining old cars

I thought you couldn’t use any cars older than 12 years old and you have a 07, 09, 2010 and it’s 2022….math doesn’t add up :/
She has been on turo since 2017. So in 2017 you were allowed to list a 12 year old car (2005). Once a car is on the platform you do not have to take it off if it is well maintained. So no today in 2022 you would not be able to put an 07 on turo, but in 2017 you could.
Yup, what @Abigail Seeger said!
👍
Maserati is not a high end luxury car. It’s ugly and inside is made by dodge. Such a lame experiment. Why you didn’t research what luxury cars people actually like? If you did, you would’ve gotten a car that would be actually rented
You lucky, literally worst car mechanically
"Experiment"
Let me do yall a favor. 75% of the time She talks in circles. 20% She promotes other content 5% is actually relevant information to the topic.
Great breakdown. Thanks for commenting for the UA-cam Algorithm 😘
I bet you would kill it at parties you werent invited to
I disagree, I think her content is really helpful 🙌🏼

Im looking 2 -3 videos of you… sorry but you talk too much for saying nothing… 8min and didn’t get Subject
This was a 6-month long experiment that I had to provide 6 months worth of context for. I also time stamp where I show the results lol.
Man people are harsh critics 😂
A Maserati is not a luxury car
Buy M2-M4 not masera
