the very best tie to use is insulated electric inner cable: wont ever break or rust and can be easily coiled! to perfection. just ask neighbours or friends or family for their unused electric appliance cords and cut open and cut in 20cm handy lenghts. thank you.
Great to the point video. We are creating a privacy fence (S) in our backyard using a screen type trellis, painted dark ( Black, emerald green, brown) and a color variety (White, reds, orange, pink) of climbing roses. The more mature /bigger sized gallon containers from the nursery the better. This is a great plan for soil that is clay hard pan from your original contractor's construction; even if you spent money on new fill dirt, top soil etc to create flower beds (Raised or not). Roses attract a variety of wild life in your backyard also. And are pretty much no care.
The tip of the main cane may produce a handful of blooms like you see in the end of this video, however the rest of the main cane is going to produce lateral canes rather than more blooms, and those lateral canes will be where almost all of the blooms grow from. It is important not to deadhead the main canes as it will hinder proper growth, which is why we recommend flagging them so you can easily which canes are the main ones.
@@heirloomroses thank you so much. Does it mean that we have made a mistake cutting some main cains to about 10cm long due to die back diseases? What we have now, are very short main canes and long laterals. So blooms are only at the tip of each lateral. What would you suggest? Waiting for new main canes to go out?
Thanks for the video . I dint understand the part to not deadhead the bloom on main cane . With bloom there will the cane continue to grow . Should we never deadhead ?
Thanks for asking. For climbing roses, we say not to cut back your main cane like you would for a shrub or hybrid tea rose. This will allow your main cane to keep growing and produce laterals that will then produce blooms. Here is a link with more information: heirloomroses.com/blogs/how-to-articles/prune-roses-that-climb
Thanks, so easy to understand. I have a question. I have a wire fence, but there is a concrete base, and edge, before it hits the grass area. The concrete on the grass is about 10-12 cm. Can I still plant a climber but then train them back with jute that leads to the wire fence? Hopefully...Thanks for your help!
Yes! There are a few smaller climbers that can be planted in a pot. Here is a link to our climbers you can grow in a pot on our website! www.heirloomroses.com/roses/roses-by-type/climbing-roses.html?characteristics=44
I just got a DA climber & of course the main canes are cut for shipping. Well in this video I learned you're never supposed to cut your main cane. So am I just waiting on the new main canes to grow up from the ground now? I wish you could do a video on the this aspect of having a climber, as in what to expect & do the first few years.
Yes, if you train the main cane horizontally it will push your plant to produce lateral canes. This will help you maximize the blooms on your climbing rose.
I planted a rose bush a few yrs ago. It was pink, and only a few blooms per year. This year, the roses changed to a deep red (very pretty surprise), and is growing like crazy. The original bush was not a climber, but this year, it looks like it is. Since I planted the original rose bush a few feet from the cottage porch, and now it is a climber…. How do I make it climb the railings when it is so far from the porch? Also, there are several main canes that look dead and are heavily thorned. Do I cut them back to the ground, or will they eventually turn green again?
Great question! It sounds like your original rose may have been overtaken by the rootstock. Here is a link with more information about rootstock and how to identify when it has taken over. heirloomroses.com/blogs/all-about-roses/about-rootstock
Hello, unfortunately we do not have a video on the construction of that trellis, you should be able to find similar designs on Google or Pinterest. Or if you're looking for an alternative design, we offer a cable trellis on our website. heirloomroses.com/collections/miscellaneous/products/cable-trellis-by-heirloom-roses
You can zip tie the lateral canes, if needed. However, when you go to prune the plant again, you will likely have to remove them in order to prune the laterals.
Really great tips! Thank you! Can you recommend some good pale pink roses that are easy to find. I have a problem with finding roses that are pale vintage pink looking.
I built a shed with these plans from Ryan [ Details Here?> *WoodBlueprints. Com* ] . The instructions were clear and easy to implement. Even a novice can be able to build fast using this plan. I'm happy I bought the plan. It also saved me much cost.
I just purchased Honeymoon Arborose. It’s a cream color with blush pink in the center. If you have more room, then New Dawn is an extremely popular climbing rose that is pale pink.
We recommend tying up the canes on climbing roses. Letting the canes lay on the ground can create more issues with disease and pests, and you are less likely to get blooms from those canes.
@@heirloomroses Awesome!!! My thornless lady banks are really overgrown. Hi, I ordered some climbing roses last week, I have a wood fence. How do I train these against a fence? Also , I had a climbing rose in my yard, which I pruned without watching these videos and I cut off the main cane at the edge, can I do something about it now ?
Your rose should be fin. It will eventually have new growth. It just may take more time. To train your rose to a wooden fence is similar to how it is done in the video, but you will attach your rose to the wooden fence panels; this can be done with twine. Here is a link to an article and newer videos on training and pruning climbing roses! www.heirloomroses.com/info/prune-roses-that-climb
Hello, we do not recommend deadheading the main cane as it can hinder its growth. Lateral canes are grown to create blooms whereas the main cane is grown to create lateral canes. You do not want to deadhead the main cane because you want it to continue producing lateral canes.
Hello, that trellis was hand build so I do not know of a place to purchase it. However we do currently sell our very own metal trellis system on our website. heirloomroses.com/products/heirlooms-own-metal-trellis-system%E2%84%A2
If you need to cut off the main cane of your climbing rose due to damage, follow these steps to ensure the health and continued growth of the plant: Assess the Damage: Ensure that removing the main cane is necessary. Sometimes, only a section may need to be pruned. Prune Cleanly: Use sharp, sterilized pruning shears to make a clean cut. This reduces the risk of disease and promotes quicker healing. Select a New Leader: Identify a strong, healthy side shoot that can be trained as the new main cane. This shoot should ideally be positioned well to become the new leader. Train the New Cane: Secure the new cane to your support structure (trellis, fence, or wall) using soft ties or garden tape. Be gentle to avoid damaging the cane. Encourage Growth: Fertilize and water the rose adequately to promote vigorous growth of the new leader. Your mix of alfalfa, bone meal, bat guano, and heirloom fish fertilizer should provide a good nutrient boost. Monitor and Adjust: Regularly check the new cane’s growth and adjust the ties as needed. Ensure it is growing in the desired direction and not being damaged. Prune as Needed: Continue with regular pruning practices, removing any weak or crossing stems to encourage strong, healthy growth.
Own-root roses will produce basal canes regularly with proper fertilization, I would suggest Founders Fish Fertilizer as well as investing in improving your soil health each season!
Climbers will slowly start to produce blooms in the second season and beyond, they spend their energy in the first few seasons growing tall rather than producing blooms.
Thank you Ryan for releasing a great product as this [ Check Details Here?> *WoodBlueprints. Com* ]. Most of the plans I have imagined in my mind are put down on your woodworking plans. This is more like a genius job. I love it!?

Yes, but you might try training it horizontal if possible to enable it to produce more lateral canes, which will in turn produce more blooms.

We recommend tying up the canes on climbing roses. Letting the canes lay on the ground can create more issues with disease and pests, and you are less likely to get blooms from those canes.
