Yeah, the best part about Galad is that he recognizes that there are others who don't follow his same path and have no wish to do so. He's never trying to enforce his views on others.
I am not sure exaactly where I read it but I remember someone groaning on learning that Galad joined the Whitecloaks but then someone responded with something to the like of: "He didn't join the Whitecloaks, he joined the Children of the Light!" And there is a difference. The Whitecloaks are, for the most part far removed from the original intent of the Children and Galad had already come far on fixing that before the Last Battle. Since he did survive I am sure that he has the chance to both return the Children to where they should be (any bets that they will be allowed to settle in Mayenne, and as a positive thing? ;-) ) as well as have a chance to have lots of talks with a certain blacksmith.
Oh, and he is Rand's half brother so yay! :-D
When Galad went up against Demandred, I said to myself, "Yes, he deserves to be the one to do this.". I was disappointed that he lost, until it turned out that Lan was the one, at which point I conceded that he deserves it even more.
Literally had the exact same reaction.
I'm a year behind, but I had to do a story time. I played a Wheel of Time MUD - a text based RPG where I could be anyone I wanted to be. I had just finished the series, and I based my character on the concept of Galad - partially cuz I knew everyone hated him for no reason, but also because he accepted people regardless of social status. I became one of the hated White Cloaks, but never was rude to channelers or arrogant. It was the most fun RP'ing I've ever had in any game period
It works so well because the trope (rightly) is always that the young hero kills the older evil villain, so after gawyns failure, we the readers, expect Galad to beat him not because of his ability in the text, but for meta reasons.
Then Lan does it, who by literary standards kinda shouldn't, but he does and its glorious (though I think he should have died, but thats a different topic)
I would have loved to have seen Rand and him talk after he learned of their shared parentage. It was one of the many things I wanted to see after the final battle. The way how Galad reacted to the news made it seem as though their encounter would have been more positive than their last. Even though I know it probably wouldn't have been written, I can't help but cringe at the fact that Robert Jordan had been pestered for years to just finish the story and pleaded with fans that he was working as fast as he could.
Yesss I wanted them to meet again!!!! Especially after seeing how galad responds to the news.....
Editing mistake and repeated myself for a couple sentences. Sorry about that!!!!
That was a great video. Honestly, the last few books of Wheel of Time made me come to love Galad, to recognize him as what essentially amounted to a saint among heroes, and while I normally don't like such characters in fantasy, Galad really embodies what I think a Paladin SHOULD be.
If you were to ever put Galad in a character comparison, I would recommend Drizzt Do'Urden, someone who similarly embodies goodness and understanding, but who responds to people differently than Galad does to what he sees happen around him.
He probably grew up feeling inadequate after being abandoned by his mother at a young age and being related to the man that caused the Aiel War.
I think that is what made this series so good, watching the chrarcters grow and develop.
galad is the literal definition of lawful good imo
I actually liked galad from the beginning his view on justice and how it was so black and white it was really interesting
Really enjoy your analysis. I also really like that there are no cutaways distracting from the topic. I’d like to see more of these.
Every time I get to the later books I feel bad that despite coming to like him my favorite scene with Galad is him getting his ass handed to him by a starving man.
I loved Galad as a character from the beginning. I think he's awesome. My favorite scene was him challenging Valda. He did so basically knowing that he would die. It was when I knew 100% he would walk the walk every time. Also I don't think eamon valda was a darkfriend, I don't remember it ever being stated or hinted that he was, just a complete scumbag.
The guy before Valda was a darkfriend right
@@saraforney3940 No, the Darkfriend was Carradin, the leader of the questioners.
Galad is (to me) the type of person you would never want to invite to anything fun or be your older sibling growing up. But if need to depend on, is on top of the short list.
I know I am really late to the game here but to me Galad is the best expression of a Paladin in fantasy.
Galas always makes me shake my head at least through the fires of heaven
Morgause did a great service by setting him straight.
I wasn't aware people didn't like Galad at first :O
In my case, the first time I read about him (via Elayne and Gawyn) made me expect... well I'm not sure what exactly, but certainly not what I got when we actually meet him. When it was learned that he had joined the Whitecloaks I was kinda confused, since I did not see him as radical in any way. Not saying that everyone who didn't like him did, but being a moral absolutist in a world where there exists very tangible absolutes in the form of light and darkness as in WoT, to me is pretty justified
I have to agree with this. I didn't like him first time reading it but I didn't the 2nd tone
Wow....i can't type. I liked him the 2nd time I read it
Valda wasn't a darkfriend though.
As you say Galad wouldn't be a good dude to drink with. He's going to be a hell of a good leader and man though.
I will say Perrin has done a couple of things that can and are blinked at as morally grey (I personally believe it's always justified, however, on face value it definitely appears morally grey). However, every time that I can think of has been caused by strong emotions. He's not like Gallad in the way that NO MATTER WHAT he will stick to his morals. However, he's probably closer than any other character (at least that I can think of).
Side note the example that came to mind was him cutting off the hands of the Shaido when torture wasn't working. But as mentioned that was caused by strong emotions. Same with him killing the whitecloaks in book 1.
Bang on. From love to hate to love to love. And although I can't say that latter love was uncomplicated, I do find that I have much to learn about hope from people like Galad. I guess I've somehow done a pretty good job of killing the part of me that is able to maintain faith in the betterment of humanity. It's funny, because I used to be so much like him as a kid, and after learning only worse and worse things about the world without seeing equivalent improvement, I find myself truly torn between trying to manifest a better future and be honest. I just want things to be better. Fast. Or be destroyed. Doesn't a rabid, old, cannibalistic, insane animal with no demonstrable chance of becoming a net positive influence upon reality deserve a mercy kill? Is that an ethically problematic evaluation of the world? I'm confused. I wish I was an ideologically fanatical prince...
I agree!
Fun fact: it took me four or five books to be able to decipher between Galad and Gawyn and it did by creating a mnemonic device of "Galad has a D in it and Galad is a dick". Now that I've finished the series I hate Gawyn and like Galad, that flipped.
Gawyn has a W in it, and Gawyn is a whiny bitch.
Do Ishamael/Moridin!
I’ve started putting my thoughts together on doing a video on some of the villains, but there honestly isn’t to much to say for a lot of them 😐. Those two, I certainly could. The dark one, Lanfear and Fain, sure, but none of the others really. Just a general FYI!
Galadedrid is a good brother.
I know you have a massive “recommendations” pile, but I would like to recommend the Age of Fire by E. E. Knight!
Oh yah I love those books.
Definitely worth a read
Praise the sun!
Meliodas always wins 😎
Perrin supreme oh yeah
No. No. No. Galad's fundamental motivation is not wanting to see people "treat each other better". That's Rand. And Perrin. Willing to start a war, with all the suffering for innocents, so he doesn't have to fail in a promise to find Elayne a ride downriver? Even more ghastly, willing to execute civilians following Perrin in order to get his way? And Valda wasn't a Darkfriend, that was Carridin. Wot is a confused mess to be sure, going out of its way to hit every false note it can, but this much was pretty clear.
Galad? More like gaLAD
Sounds like an old school Catholic. Or American Evangelical. I can see why alot of modern readers would find he rubs them the wrong way.
Just one point on this: I might be misremembering, but was Valda a darkfriend? He was a terrible person, obviously, but I don't think the books say he sold his soul.
no I don't think he was, I read it as he was loyal to his version of the children of the light, just a run of the mill bad guy not a darkfriend
Not a darkfriend just a douche
i just finished lord of chaos and i have to say i like Galad more than Gawyn.
Yea, he wasnt too bad but I couldn't stand Gawyn at really any time
Yeah, but that's cause Gawyn is the worst character in the entire series.
Ya, everyone is more likeable than gawyn. Except maybe egwene. Glad they found each other
I miss this calm, even-keeled Daniel of days past. Your newer videos can get a little over-the-top craycray sometimes.
Thank you! I never really got the Galad hate. I wouldn't want to grab a beer with him more than once, but he had his principles and stood by them, and was willing to listen. He'd be a fascinating person to talk to, as long as you didn't have to repeat the experience 😂
Galad and Berelain though ... What do they have in common other than both being ridiculously attractive. What do they talk about ... Does Berelain just tell Galad stories about that time she sexually harassed Perrin for over a year?
When Galad joined the white cloaks I was done with him. Extremism is not something I can admire. Just my take.
I have always admitted people who have strong moral convictions and have the strength to live by them unfailingly, so I always liked Galad, even from the very beginning. I didn't see him as arrogant about his fighting ability, but more as having an unwavering confidence.. I was not happy about his decision to join the Whitecloaks however. I felt that someone who believes so strongly in moral absolutes would reject such an organization because so much of their activity was morally questionable, or down right wrong. Although, it is true that he would have to join the Whitecloaks to influence reform.
I disagree with you about Perrin never making a morally wrong decision. He chose to set aside his duties in order to search for Faile. Understandable of course, but he did put his personal feelings before duty. (Also IMO, one of the worst story lines in the entire series.)
Considering Perrin had just recently lost his entire family, I understand why his mind was consumed with not loosing his wife as well
@@breezy3392 Yes, there is that. But the fact he neglected his leadership responsibilities (which I know he never wanted) weighed heavily on him after the fact and he had to come to grips with that. I still love Perrin and think he is among the strongest moral characters in the series.
@@jodiz5901 Agreed
I loved Galad towards the end. He's frustrating at times, but he means well
I started liking Galad when he commandeered that boat for Elane. It was there that you really first get to see his love for his family. His character gets better and better as the series progresses. IMHO.
Galad alignment: Lawful Stupid.
Galad, to me, is a Lawful Good character done perfectly right. That's not a popular place to exist in the postmodern world, but for what it's worth, he's been my favourite character since the very beginning.
I think sometime around when Elayne talks about him and says how he always made sure that the siblings were punished, but always insisted that he would be as well.
To me, he had this Stannis-like aura that I've always respected in the most stringent (and most well-read! At least in the books) of the Baratheon brothers, however being an idealist and generally much less jaded made him much more into who would I rather be instead of just who I am.
Seeing your old bookshelf compared to the now bookshelf🤯
The beginning to Knife of Dreams is arguably my favorite beginning to a wheel of time book (its got competition with Egwene in Eye of the world as a young girl.) Galad gathering the strength and courage to confront Valda...his superior officer and leader, killing him in 1 v 1 sword duel sent chills down my spine. Galad is always described as being so nice and too good to the point of annoyance and he constantly estranges his family members and rubs people the wrong way. Hes kinda an outcast and he feels like he let his mom down and once he hears that Morgase his mom was kidnapped and beaten and graped by Valda he just fills with quiet rage and determination to kill his moms abuser. It set the tone for the rest of the book that shit is about to go down
Yeah galad is lawful good. Shanchan lawful evil. Rand is chaotic good with a little bit of lawful good and the dark one and Padan Fein are chaotic evil as well as most of the dark friends. Most other people are either neutral or neutral good
Daniel: I have a cough
Also Daniel: Pt Pt Pt!
Great, now I want to read 14 book just to see what happens with Galad and Perrin. Thanks Daniel
btw Galad is speculated to have spark..
Valda wasn't a dark friend, am I wrong?
@@jamescharles5907 nope, he wasn't
✊I adore the consistency
Glad is a Paladin. And thus why I don't like him! He embodies everything DnD Paladin's are suppose to be.
Your ability to analyze so well somebody who is unlikeable but who is extremely honorable and admirable is wonderful. I have met a few people like Galad. They are insufferable PITAs but there are few people I would trust more when the chips are down. Before I ever read the WoT series, I aspired to some Galad like qualities. I failed utterly except for the part about not being very popular. In that, I succeeded very well indeed!
Oh Valda was definitely an asshole but I don't think he was a darkfriend.
Sounds based
