This is a cinematic masterpiece. I particularly love the moment where the lemon looks directly into the camera and says “I am the citrusy void, embrace me.” CHILLS.
I didn't have a will to live but this short video brought back my passion to keep going on. So inspiring. If only my life could be as dramatic as this lemon.
SPOILER ALERT: I don't want so spoil this for anyone so scroll down at your own peril. You have been warned. Lemon stays static. Frame stays static. Light, that bitch, does not know the plan and moves and shit.
It shows you how important lighting is to an item you are shooting. It can change and convey the meaning of your film so easily like switching a switch ~
True, but this isn't 7 minutes of a lemon in darkness. It's 7 minutes of a lemon emerging from and returning to darkness via a moving light source. Brilliant!
I saw this for a college English course in the early 80's. Didn't understand it then, still don't. But it may have inspired Cabin Pressure's lemon gag.
“Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!”
That was conceptually different. "Lemon" is about lighting and contrasts; "Empire" is not meant to be watched as a film, but seen as art in that it exists. It's existence is what makes it art,not the beauty of the film itself.
yo that's the sex number EDIT: omg you guys thanks for 100 likes EDIT: you GUYS this is unreal! Thank you for blowing this up to 690000 likes!Love you all!
Yes, because this was made fifty years ago. If you showed the class how to light a fire with matches for your thesis, you'd get an F too. Also, a class is not really an accurate reflection of the world. Grades in art school don't mean anything. If they do, you're going to the wrong school lol.
Stripped down but not as exciting as when a painter or musician cuts out excess or really anything at all. A portrait of a lemon with exquisite lighting or even mediocre care can be a wondrous thing ! to a thinking filmmaker this Frampton idea has worth and tells us of his beginnings and concerns : that should be enough !
THIS IS GENIOUS - Said no one ever, because it's not, it's common fucking sense. We should all be experimenting with light and film, and how they effect our perception of time. Rhythm and structure in all walks of life. But we don't. Anyway, although this video isn't genius it is beautiful in it's own way.

It has an endless gaze...a million mile stare. Piercing right through, so invasive is it’s little nipple.
When life gives you lemons, make a short film about lighting.
this comment is 10/10
Wow, I was not expecting that twist at the end.
The Robert Huot reveal

It illustrates how lighting can dramatize any object if you use it right, it's awesome.
Yes!
Nothin' I can do, a total eclipse of the lemon
Dude have you ever looked at a lemon? No I mean really looked.
For real doe
SPOILER ALERT: I don't want so spoil this for anyone so scroll down at your own peril. You have been warned.

This film was mentioned in my textbook!
I can now say “I have contemplated my life while watching lighting change position and therefore it’s effect on a lemon

Best time to watch it after a real good fight with your parents.
when life gives you lemons just record a light panning over and behind it
This film is about life and death.
Why?
Tour de force
That certainly was a lemon.
It certainly was.
What makes you so sure?
I don't know, it looked like an orange to me.
This is an lemon
Another one-shot film is Andy Warhol's infamous "Empire." Maybe artists in those days intended these to be some kind of live paintings...
then years later, like Hollis Frampton, you would get a Criterion blu ray release. :)
evocative
beautiful
Play 'Take a Walk' by Passion Pit in the background to this, and it suddenly gains intensely deep meaning
Pretty good, but I didn’t understand why the cops started chasing after that one driver instead of the bank robbers.
This is so lemon
Very appeeling!
that's why you don't play with your food - Dean (2015)

When life hands you lemons, make poppyseed tea.

Have you unraveled the enigma that is Lemon, yet?
Doesn't this have an audio commentary to go with it?

It do be a lemon though
I would've laughed but then I remembered there's a guy who did an 8 hour one shot of the Empire State Building.
+MysteryAccent That "guy" was Andy Warhol.
+andres65080 Still a guy, tho.

Is this why serious artists have trouble convincing a skeptical public that SERIOUS art exists?
Lemon.

If i filmed 7 minutes of a fruit sitting in darkness, I would get an F.
Yes, because this was made fifty years ago. If you showed the class how to light a fire with matches for your thesis, you'd get an F too. Also, a class is not really an accurate reflection of the world. Grades in art school don't mean anything. If they do, you're going to the wrong school lol.
If it was a film class, you might get an A.
Salut salut les gens de Paul Va (L3 Cinéma) 😁
