This reminds me of how in the Depression many people would make clothes out of flour sacks, and the flour companies actually started printing their sacks with patterns because it was such a thing!

Yes! During WW2 flour companies would compete with each other to use the nicest prints because it was such a hit that it would influence which brand people would buy. My grandmothers had many flour sack dresses/curtains/quilts!

For me, it's more about stuff like seam allowances: e.g. accidentally ending up with them folded over sideways on the arms, but flat on the torso side seams, adding a lot of awkward-to-trim-out unneccesary bulk in the armpit seam? But I'm still very inexperienced with making tops (vs skirts) so probably get tripped up by stuff that seems just automatic to a more practiced sewist! 😏

Although she seems largely unaware of it, this young woman's productions are astonishingly competent and appealing to the viewer, whether sewing-knowledgeable or not:. All of her videographic idiosyncracies -- the sly self-deprecation, the doggie subtitles, the jarring non sequiturs, the brilliant jump cuts, and countless other features of her (apparently instinctive) style -- conspire to make Rachel Maksy episodes supremely watchable. Multiple times. She is a true UA-cam joy and pleasure. Many UA-cam creators are smart, skilled, and useful. Maksy, however, defines a unique category, one for which I am grateful, and I'm sure I am not alone in that.

UK too - Great British Sewing Bee! It's very different from Project Runway because it's home sewing rather than designing.
Three challenges per episode: 1. (unseen) Pattern Challenge, where they literally give you a paper pattern and there's a full haberdashery; 2. Transformation Challenge, where they give you used stuff (ranging from men's suits to lightweight tents, depending on the challenge) and you have to make a new thing (ranging from cocktail dress to children's hallowe'en costume); 3. Made To Measure, where you have an actual living, breathing model and they have to be ready to walk five hours later (could be an evening dress or a men's work jacket). They can only prepare for the Made To Measure, but knowing the week's theme probably helps a bit - is it children's, is it summer, is it unconventional materials, etc.
It's great - look it up!

You could also sew a bunch of pillow cases together and use that as a base fabric for larger patterns. It really is a good way to avoid buying new fabric. The downside to this: Here it is actually in fashion to wear clothes made from bedcovers and sheets etc. so it's hard to find any left at the thriftstores to actually use as bedsheets (and they are rather expensive to buy from new). Buuut still love the thrifting idea
