I heard when I was searching online I see a yellow one so I think it's the truly ripe or overripe one while the people prefer eating it green just like limes.
There's an endangered garcinia in Puerto Rico that grows around El Yunque - I've heard it tastes good, if you can find it. There are only 60 of those trees left in the world, so hopefully people can figure out how to grow them.
A garcinia tier list would be interesting! Too bad I've only been able to find mangosteen so far (and that it costs $30/kg), but it's got to be my favorite fruit so far.
Hello, my child is obsessed with fruits and has learned so much from your channel and thinks it’s worth to make a small donation for all the things you taught him :D
Well, we normally use it as ingredient for hot & sour soup (usually with mackerel) and as a sourness agent in Namprik (chilli dipping sauce). Those who eat it as a snack are mostly girls since Thai men in general can't really tolerate extreme sourness :P
Can't agree more, this channel introduced me to the 'cannibal holocaust' and 'the black cat' theme which were used in his older videos. Both themes are not something everyone would like but I love them and will remember them for a long time. It's a big loss that he doesn't use them anymore.
Maaaaan, your channel is making a big comeback in my watch routine, bringing exactly the wholesome, hopeful energy one needs in what feels like Norway's endless winter 🧡
Another Garcinia you should try out, if you should ever make it back to the Philippines, is the Garcinia binucao, known as the "binukaw" or "batuan" fruit (in the Visayan region), and is used as a souring agent for some local foods. They're quite rare these days - and their numbers are certainly diminishing.
I was trying to make a book with part of it having in it every fruit and vegetable and I found ur channel years ago but u still r constantly finding new fruits so I am wondering if it will every truly end 😂 I am gonna be making my lists forever
Finally one of the few fruits I've eaten first. I had this sliced fresh with cucumber and hot red chile sauce at one of those southern Thailand style grilled chicken stalls in Bangkok. The proprietress also would make a salad similar to typical som tam but with sliced fresh madan added
I am from Southern India and I can understand the fruit that you are talking about, though it is not available in India. But we have other strong and intense tasting fruits and vegetables. And we usually pickle them. Do check out pickles from Andhra Pradesh. You will find them interesting.
@@WeirdExplorer Well, I am not being pedantic here but "achar" you had it in Northern India is totally different from the pickles of Andhra Pradesh. We've mastered the art of pickling things. If you can find someone from the state of Andhra Pradesh do talk to him; ask him/her specifically for Avakaya and Magaya. Its a culinary experience that's worth your while. Cheers and Best wishes!
Ooh its look like belimbing buluh..what we call in malaysia..but here the skin more light and almost look like star fruit minus sharp pointy edge..and its suuuupeerrr sour..more than lemon 😂
I've got a system! I carry on my backpack on the way there (its shocking the amount of times bags get lost/delayed) so I can't bring a knife. I'll usually buy a cheap fruit knife at the market and ditch it at the hotel before boarding any other flights. then on my last day before heading home, I cram my bag full of souvenirs and snacks and if I have a knife I'll check that one. So sometimes I'll make the last one a good one.
I've been using a canon m50 for about 6 years or so now, Its a good camera. The problem is I'll often use my phone out in public so I don't draw too much attention. But yeah a new phone is on the list for 2024 haha
Plant-medicine is a more crucial, important, even revolutionary subject for humanity than most of us realize yet at this time. For one, there is a core collection now of "infamous" medicinal plants we have all mostly become estranged from, as the plants have been thoroughly stigmatized, criminalized, slandered, and obscured from us in myriad ways, while government and the pharmaceutical industry tries to be the exclusive "handlers" of these original medicines, stripping and distorting them, and then distributing patentable, but neutered/partial and even problematic forms back to humanity, further serving the ill reputation of the plants. Opium poppies are a big one.
There's the sour eating culture in Thailand. Anything sour we'll dip it into a namprik be it simple salt and chilly or more complicated namprik like namplawan (a sweet syrupy namprik). I have a couple of Madun trees in my back yard, but that's more of my mom's thing. I like Mayom (star gooseberry) better, Tum (means to pound, in pestle and mortar) Mayom with Kapi (shrimp paste) is the bomb.

The one you got was under developed, normal ones are more plump. It turns a lighter color when fully ripe

good tip. thanks!
Do you happen to know if they can be cultivated?
For sour things, like unripe mangos, we use a mix of chili, salt and sugar, the sugar helps a lot to suppress the sourness.
Going thru these vids is bringing back the trip, I love sour fruits and remember this one being pretty good!
this episode made my mouth water! I will try this when im in thailand
enjoy! it's most commonly sold by street vendors

Your too-bitter face makes me laugh every time! 😂
The look on your face and your body language as you eat it is priceless.🤣
As a guy who really loves sour things, but sweet as well, I wonder if this might be good cooked in a simple syrup..
Very very different looking garcinia, i thought it was a lily seed pod from the thumbnail.

I love trying different exotic fruits in Thailand and the Philippines! Enjoy your informative updates 😊
I think it would be funny to see the locals reacting to him just straight up taking a bite out of these sour ass fruits like a crazy person 🤣
What timing, just last Friday I bought some achacha , another non round garcinia

In thailand they usually pickle those. it take away the bitterness.

The name reminds me of Explosive Madan and other similarly named moves in Dragon Ball lol.
Nice that your next video will be your 1000th vid
Have you done a video on Burmese Grapes? They look very interesting
I've got an episode coming up in the future about it. But I have had some close relatives, search the channel for rembai.
Have you ever had a dove tree fruit?
NGL I clicked because I thought it said "MADMAN FRUIT" and I like drugs.
Yet another one of those sour punch flavour x
sounds too sour for me but i love pickled stuff so I'd try it that way for sure 👌🏻
And the laxative effect?
Useful
Sounds intense!
Looks like you won't have a straight face for MORE than a week! You were so puckered!
I like that this video began in a circus in Paris circa 1889. I liked the contortionist best.
Hi Jared. Guess you know @allthefruit channel, ever thought of a collaboration? Would be great to see
Did they not have a ripe one or are they ripe just like that?
always green! I couldn't find photos of them any other way, so I believe thats what they are ripe.
Have you tasted the red mangosteen..?
Big hugs from Denmark
💝🥰🌹
have you ever tried manzanita berries?
hmm.. I don't think so.
i hear they are sweet and tart, and manzanita bushes are common all over the west coast
