5 Positional Words in Finnish: PÄÄLLÄ, ALLA, EDESSÄ, TAKANA & VIERESSÄ | Part 1 "The Basics"
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- In today's Finnish lesson, I will go over 5 different positional / location describing words in Finnish.
📝 Vocab:
⚬ Päällä = On top
⚬ Alla = Under
⚬ Edessä = In front
⚬ Takana = Behind
⚬ Vieressä = Next to
There are still a few more positional words that I think would be useful to know, but those will be covered in a future lesson so stay tuned 😊
P.S. I know some of the words I used in the sample sentences slightly different compared to the forms in the above vocab list ~ don't worry about them too much for now.. 😅

Super happy this is finally uploaded! I forgot how slow the internet in the UK can be ... xD It took 2 hours to upload the video onto UA-cam & when it was at 70% I had to leave the flat so had so re-start the upload later in the afternoon when I came back OOPS! Hope everyone has an awesome weekend wherever in the world you are! Hyvää viikonloppua teille kaikille missä lie oottekaan! :D
Hi Katja, Greeting from Ireland!! I hope you are enjoying the sights around Edinburgh, Hyvää viikonloppua!!
@@karhukivi Kiitos paljon, yes I'm loving Edinburgh! And hello to Ireland :)
@@KatChatsFinnish I know I haven't been around but you're still my Beautiful love! Lol
Oooooh, is it really SO slow?! I sympathize you, that is great you did it! ❤️❤️❤️
@@merclangrat Thank you hahah my next video took 10 hours to upload xD
Notice how all the locationors are postposition and the nouns are in genetive? Also, Katchats uses different inflections of the locator seemingly without realizing that she does so. For example when using 'takana' she also says 'mun taakse' (or minun taakse). Remember. Taakse is derived from taka (takana is the essive of taka). The ease with which Finns use the different inflections never ceases to amaze me. Thank you for the video, Katja!
Yeah I actually only noticed it myself as I was editing! Thank you for the insightful comment 😊
Thank you for putting your effort into your videos ❤️ for someone who is trying to learn Finnish (which is not the most popular language among learners) by themselves this is everything 🙏🏻❤️
Aww you're so sweet. Thank you seriously so so much, kiitos tosi tosi paljon! It makes me so happy to hear that you enjoy my videos and hopefully I can continue to make many more in the future :)

What a coincidence 😊 Good refresher then!
very informative, the example sentences are very helpful too (especially because you often use puhekieli, where it's hard to find examples online)

Kiitos Katya, those words are really necessary! Have a good time in Edinburgh (unfortunately I have never been there, I need a visa and corona restrictions are still ongoing...)

Hyvää viikkonloppu, @KatChats!! Minun täytty tunnustaa että asemoivat sanat ovat hyödyllisiä koska asun Turussa, Suomessa nyt, minä opiskelen Åbo Akademissa ja olen oikein onnellinen. Se on totta unelma olla Suomessa minulle ja toivon että minä voin paranta suomeni :)
Kiitos paljon! Kiva, että viihdyt Turussa :) Onnea suomen kielen opiskelussa!
Kiitos paljon! Sinä motivoit ja inspiroit minua tulemaan Suomeen. Olen fanisi :)
Kiitos paljon 🌺
Kiitos! :)
That was an amusing video... I like that it was informative but at the same time light-hearted! The funniest moments were those where you tried to hide your laughter.
Have a great time in Scotland! :)
... and a question that is burning on my mind! Did your take your dog with you?
And maybe "prepositon" was the word you were looking for. But since in Finnish those 'location words' come after the word that needs location-defining maybe 'postpositions' nails it better ^^
Oh! I like the word postpositions hahah. And no I didn't take Sidney 😊 I wouldn't want to take her on an airplane. She has always been our family dog so she lives with my parents and is currently still there :)
Wow, amazing video! Liked the examples a lot! Kiitos for the effort! 🥰 how is Sidney doing? Is she with you or in Finland?
Thank youuu! Sidney is doing well, she has another vet appointment today to check her condition so hopefully everything will be okay or at least on the way to being okay! She is my family dog so she has always lived with my parents :)
How to say 'in between A&B' and 'in the middle'?
Moi moi princess!!!
thank you
Kiitos :)
From now on and on i will apply the rule: whenever i see Katja's video, the like will be given AUTOMATICALLY! ;
That's so kind of you 🥺
It's interesting that "on something" translates into "jonkin päällä" and conjugates as "päällä, päältä, päälle". The same pattern follows as "under something" is "alla, alta alle", and "in front of something" is "edessä, edestä, eteen". But when it comes to "takana" it only conjugates as "taakse". And to make it more confusing "vieressä"conjugates as "vieressä, vierestä, viereen" but also as "vierellä, viereltä, vierelle". How does it make sense or am I missing something :D. Finnish is so random anyway
The full paradigm of "taka-" (behind) words is "takana, takaa, taakse". So it takes the essive, partitive and translative cases. There is also "luo-" (around) with the paradigm "luona, luota, luokse". Also note "ulko-" (outside) with the paradigm "ulkona, ulkoa, ulos", where the last form has the defunct lative case "-s". There are several other similarly behaving words.
Postpositional words that have this kind of case paradigm are very old, and their paradigms have preserved some of the oldest known uses of Finnish cases. Some forms even still use the lative case "-s", which is not used in modern Finnish by itself anymore. (The lative "-s(e)" still exists in the case system as part of the "-ssa" and "-sta" cases, which are originally a combination of lative "-s(e)" with essive "-na" or partitive "-(t)a", respectively. It also exists in the translative "-ksi" or "-kse".)
Additionally, with regards to "ete-" (front) and several other positional words, two different case paradigms coexist, corresponding to the modern Finnish distinction of "inner" and "outer" locative cases. So "ete-" can take the forms "edessä, edestä, eteen" and also "edellä, edeltä, edelle", depending on the nuance of how close the topic being talked about is to the main word of the postposition. Same thing with "viere-" (next to), the two case paradigms coexist.
There are more weird things and nuances with this class of words (such as "alhaalla, alhaalta, alas" vs. "alla, alta, alle") but this comment is definitely long enough now, so I'll stop here...
❤❤❤
Kiitos paljon videosta.
Opettaja, when I say "I use this new stove", do I use accusative or partitive?
(Accusative) Käytin tämän uuden lieden.
(Partitive) Käytin tätä uutta liettä.
I think I must use accusative.
You would use the second sentence! So in the past tense “käytin tätä uutta liettä” or present tense ”käytän tätä uutta liettä” :)
It's interesting to see that, unlike in Germanic languages, these words go behind the word they refer to. Just like in Hungarian.
Koska unkari is similar to Finnish (forgetten cousin who last with you many years ago (similar words because both are from uralic branch ) are similar
@@tamperetexsas8727 Yes, indeed. I'm Hungarian and have been learning Finnish for a while. I can definitely see the similarities, but you're right, they quite distant cousins. 😉
@@mokuscsik
The closest cousins of Magyar are geographically the farthest Fenno-Ugric languages from Finland/Finnish (Hanti and Manži) so logically the similarities are not very obvious.
Finnish and Magyar are basically in the opposite ends of lingual continuum. Many farming/nature/family/body etc. related core words are similar and the grammarical elements are shared by most uralic languages.
@@mrj.kottari8453 yes, thanks for this! I remember learning about it back in school. I since have looked it up many times and it's really weird, as I should understand what they say, but it's a very old version of Hungarian. And they write in Cyrillic. 😁 And that's exactly why we were taught that Hungarians migrated from the Ural area to where they are now (well, this is one theory, amongst many)
Great to see new video. How's your dog btw :D ?
Thanks! She's doing well thanks for asking :) She has another vet appointment to see if everything has healed or not so hoping all is well :D
Next word suggestions are Lähellä & Kaukana to keep with the Location Theme.
Good lesson. Thank you. So are you in the UK now?
Thank you, and yes I am 😊
You're back in the UK? Mixed feeling: I'm happy you're back in the country - but at the same time I'm sorry you're back in this country. So mixed because we seem to be a bit messed up atm and hope it doesn't affect you.
Hahaha all is good! Just here for a bit meeting up with old university friends and enjoying the atmosphere of Edinburgh :D Plus the weather is still so summery it's great!
@@KatChatsFinnish Oh, catching up with old friends is fun and Edinburgh's a great city - have fun! Just promise you won't use any of our (apparently) irreplacable petrol.
please explain in finnish the english 7 parts of speech
great video
Kiitos!
😀😃😁😄😄😄 Welcome back to Eginburgh! But WHEN are you coming to our continent too, Katjaさん???
Hahah I don't know 👀 It was a long time coming even making it to Scotland xD
Auto on Edessä, does that make sense? Hope you’re enjoying Edinburgh, change of scene must be nice?
The car is in front it makes.
Like when someone is passing the road then suddenly tell him
Auto on edessä
Yes, makes perfect sense! And thanks, loving it here :)
@@KatChatsFinnish glad to hear it!
Hi my name is Michael (Iso) Maki my doctors name is Hakkala can you tell me what it means. Thank you
I don't know if it means anything in particular. There are a few small cities called Hakkala though and the variation of Hakala is pretty popular.
Hi moi. Im here now in lahti pls i want to learn baisic finnish language help me thanks
Olan wa, Suppa Happy desu yo ! Gambatte Kudasai KaTiKa-san! Get around the Scotland yardo and Repotto kudasai
Share me please the meaning of "koko" . Is it pronoun or noun? I'm confusing concern with this.
There are two meanings for the word "koko" :) One is "size" so it would be a noun (Eg. Paitani koko on S = My shirt size is S). The other meaning is "whole" which would be an adjective (Eg. Koko koulu = The whole school)
@@KatChatsFinnish Kiitos paljon my lovely 🥰
😘
:)
4.25 vieressä/ääressä. Onko niillä jotakin eroa?
Mmh ääressä kinda implies you are on the side of something just to be there or huddled there.
Yeah, so äärellä would translate more to like "by the..." for example "by the river" = "joen äärellä" or "by the table" = "pöydän ääressä" the slight nuance is similar to English I think. And then vieressä is "next to"
What is her talking here?
About direction in Finnish

What? The biggest story of all and you barely mentioned it. The face of Finland is not in Finland! Is this a permanent thing? Will we be learning Gaelic next? At least the winter will be slightly milder. Take care kat.
Hahahah! I'm visiting uni friends so here for just a while :) I will experience the cold soon again xD
@@KatChatsFinnish Tabhair aire
Wow, U so beautiful 👀
Thanks 😅
Me kaikki olemme taivan alla. Tai taivan päällä jos olet astronautti 🤷🏻♂️
Hahahah yep yep! :D
I would like to learn about 'ylös, ylöspäin, ylhäällä'. That is my wish and suggestion for a video.
Päällä is good, but ylhäällä is different.
These are very helpful. I hadn't learned vieressä before.
Happy to hear that! :)
Kiitos. Kysymys. Milloin tulee Taka ja milloin on takana?
Hmm, I think takana (to my ears) sounds more like "on the behind" and taka sounds more like "back" eg. takakontti = back trunk (in a car)
Katya entä koirasi ? 🤔
Хороший вопрос= Hyvää kysymys :). Добрая собака. Kiltti koira.
Mun koira on perheeni luona Suomessa :)
