Reminds me of a VW Rabbit PU done by a shop in CA during the late '80s--it was a diesel model (no smog check) with an Olds Toronado engine and transaxle in the back. It's safe to say the fun didn't come from front.

That’s one way to solve the reverse problem. Very cool build!

The owner lives on the next block from me. I see it on the street all the time and I was wondering what the details were. Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad you found it informative. Thanks to him for bringing it down to show at the event. I wish I would have got his contact info. Anybody crazy enough to do this, earns high marks in my book.

I was just talking about doing this with a Honda fit transaxle lol

Hi John. I wasn't following how he matches output power from BEV and ICE when he said "They just sorta match each other". Did he say anymore on this? Does the ICE have a transmission?

He has the ICE tied into the accelerator pedal somehow. I believe it has to do with how fast and hard you press on it, dictates if the ICE kicks on or not. It has an override to stay in ICE for when the HV battery is low to maintain the charge as well. It has the stock 6 speed manual transmission out of the bike. If you look at the images of the front interior you can see the shifter.

Electronic throttle body on the bike engine, knob on the dashboard hooked up to the electronic throttle pedal. The knob let’s you select how much throttle signal gets sent to the electric or the ice engine, so it can run full electric, full bike engine, or 50/50, and everything between.

Oh, I misunderstood what was going on here. I thought it was a back-up engine similar to the BMW i3 Rex So both motors can run at the same time, powering the wheels (gas rear and electric front)?

It's a fully stock LEAF BEV driving the front wheels with a superbike engine driving the rear wheels. The engine only kicks in when the accelerator is floored or it can act as generator when the battery is low. It's quite something.

@@theevolvingworld Some impressive engineering going on there. I wonder how long it takes for the engine to turn over and be useful once you floor the pedal. Seems like there'd be an unnatural delay there. Still, impressive.

At least it's still an EV. But, yes no backseats & no practical cargo area (as it's now an engine compartment). Also 300 lbs. more weight does not help range. But, still an interesting science experiment.

I mean, this is literally the only leaf I’ve ever had any interest in driving or owning, so I’d say he’s done the opposite.
