IMAGINE....a cold winter night....you and the wife/hubby...sitting together no TV...the youngster/s...in bed tomorrow is Christmas!...well..you are not rich but there is love in the house...and the radio is the main form of entertainment this wintry evening..and dickens a Christmas carol...you listen to every year is coming on...starring the awesome Lionel Barrymore!!..well...just imagine.....
This was a treasured part of many holiday seasons, typically via radio broadcasts on WABC and other AM outlets in New York City throughout the Seventies, and I thank you for this opportunity to discover it anew.
Still wish they did something like this on the radio today. The music and production was something else. Want to Thank You for listening and commenting!
Probably the most famous version of Lionel Barrymore's yearly radio appearances as "Ebenezer Scrooge" on radio during the '30s and '40s [Welles himself was "Scrooge" in the 1938 "CAMPBELL PLAYHOUSE" ("MERCURY THEATER") edition]. The "Mercury Players" and Bernard Herrmann's score add to the period {and festive} atmosphere....one of radio's finest hours!
WHAT AN ERA WHEN ALL WE HAD TO WORRY ABOUT WAS IF "SCROOGE" GOT HIS IN THE END INSTEAD OF ALL WE HAVE TODAY. SOME PEOPLE NEED AN ARSENAL OF THINGS TO MAKE THEM FEEL BETTER ABOUT LIFE. RADIO SHOWS OF THIS ERA IS ONE FOR ME AND I LOVE THIS ONE WITH ALL MY HEART!!!
Thanks for listening to these shows on our channel. World is full of Scrooge's that need to feel great by being the richest or have the most. No good will left in the world. Getting worse each day. Thanks again for your support.
Orson Welles genius was the radio. Even in films he never was as creative as he was when working with the theater of the mind. If you ever get a chance to listen to his Mercury Theater version of Dracula you'll never forget it. God bless you Mr. Orson Welles.

Have always loved this story and I watch the movie every Christmas. Its so touching. Lionel Barrymore is such a great actor and made many great movies. His family continued having great actors and actress Drew Barrymore.
I wish radio stations still played these old, classic shows, even if only during the holidays. I get so tired of all these news/talk stations focusing solely on "gloom and doom" everything. Hearing some of these cheerful, upbeat radio shows, or even the dramas and mysteries, would be a welcome respite to "who did what to Congress" or stories about "being abducted by UFO's." Ugh!
@Erzhaler: shake yerself! If you can't find these timeless classic old radio programs at Christmas time, then you are unfortunately listening to the wrong station(s). These classics are replayed in countless markets. No need to be without.....just open your eyes and ears....Enjoy!
I'm getting back into listening to your many fantastic radio recordings here on your channel dear sir. You can picture families sitting around the radios listening to the progarams. 🖐👻
Lionel Barrymore was slated to star in MGM's 1938 film version of "A Christmas Carol". Unfortunately, Barrymore broke his hip on set of another movie and was unable to appear. The role went to Reginald Owen. While Owen did an admirable job of portraying Scrooge, what a loss it was to not see Barrymore on screen in the role he had made his own.
Reginald Owen's portrayal of Scrooge is my favorite, made in 1938,also starred Gene, and Marguerite, June Lockhart.Iam not sure if that is correct name of Mrs.Lockhart? This version was one I thought was the most enjoyable tho Alister Sim's version was good also.Thank you,for this radio version.
I thought it was because Barrymore had really bad arthritis. That's what I read somewhere. I also read that Barrymore was the one who recommended Reginald Owen to replace him.
At the time, this was heard on Sundays at 8pm(et)...directly opposite NBC's "CHASE AND SANBORN HOUR" [with Don Ameche, Edgar Bergen & "Charlie McCarthy", Donald Dixon, and guest star Gloria Jean].
In 1927 Campbell Playhouse announcer Ernest Chappell was the then 24-year-old General Manager of radio station WHAM in Rochester, NY. Chappell oversaw WHAM becoming an NBC "Blue Network" affiliate. One of the founders of WHAM was George Eastman, yhe founder of Kodak.
a fabulous interpretation the only thing that could have been better would have been another thirty minutes to work with you have to leave certain details out to do an hour long adaptation ninety minutes is perfect, still Barrymore was an ideal Scrooge the supporting cast was great and the narrations really captured the spirit of the story thanks for sharing
When I first saw the Alistair Sim version, I was surprised to see just how much of the original story had to be cut to fit this into the 60 minutes. Lionel Barrymore played Scrooge a number of times on the radio, but this is by far the best version. Trying to squeeze it into a 30 minute format, as most of his subsequent performances did just didn't do justice to either the story or Barrymore's superb portrayal of Scrooge.
