BMW R50 first start after restoration

- This is a rather boring 7 minute video of the footage of the final chapter of my BMW R50 retoration- the starting of the bike for the first time after the restoration and taking it off the table it was restored on. I have posted it mostly for BMW fans who are interested in viewing moments like these. Looking at it now, I note how at the end I see myself starting the bike for the first time by myself. Only minutes later did I ride it 33 miles back to my home garage where it lives now. That trip was also the very first time I ever rode a real motorcycle on a public road. It was a big day for me.
For more information on this 1958 R50 pleas see my other related videos.
Wonderful story and restoration. Thank you for sharing this!❤
Nicely done! Congratulations! I am willing to bet that now...9 years after this video was made...you are still enjoying it!
You guessed correctly! I ride it all the time. Especially during these Covid days.
I just rode it on sunday for a few hours. I have 2 little kids and very little spare time at this stage in my life, but you can bet that any chance I get that I take my dad's bike out and head for the best curvy 2 lane roads in my area! She still starts up on the second kick and I treasure every ride. I am currently building my first custom café racer based on a newer R100RT. It will be a nice compliment to my R50 and I will use it when I ride with faster bikes and go for longer day-trips.
This was my very first bike when I was 18.
Now it's used by my brother and still running as on the first day.
You have done a great job with the restoration of this gem!

thanks man. You were very lucky to have one at just 18! She's my first bike too but I was 40 when I rode it for the first time, just a few days after this video was shot.
Well done, fantastic restoration. I just saw your piece in the VBMWMO mag. I have just finished an R60 myself. I'm sure you will have just as many happy memories with this as your Dad. Good luck ...stay upright. Brownie in Australia
Remember my old R-90S starting with kickstart. The firs times was near impossible but... when you learn how to is easy!
Those old beautyes!...
She started first pop, that's gotta be a good omen. Love those grip indicators...what's old is new again !
Nice job on the full restoration, congratulations. But keep your day job .
alsways a beautiful bike, a beemer!
good luck with it
greetz from Belgium!
Thats a keeper! looks like an air plane engine. hott!!!
I understand your feelings even I only can say good job
well done...
Your advisor and mentor should have informed about cranking through wo/ ignition.
Thanks for your concern but you probably know less than you think you know.
That would be me. I am mechanically inclined, but do not take a full restoration on yourself without being prepared to buy lots of specialized BMW tools. I had a lot of help from my friend Peter in this video who had all the knowledge and the special tools. You could get advice though from Benchmark Works and you could send the harder pieces out to specialized vendors.
sorry to reply one year later. I haven't been reading comments recently. I restored this bike myself with a great deal of help from Peter Nettesheim who is seen in this video. In fact I had no idea what I was doing and he taught be how to do it all. I will restore yours if you pay me $100,000. I wouldn't do it for less, personally, as it takes me a year to do!
Who did the restoration work?? I have a '68 R50/2 that needs a total restoration.
thanks. subscribe to my videos and you'll see the new cafe once It is done and I shoot some videos.
LOL! If you don't pass the gravel test your just not worthy. Great mechanic kinda guy that would show the broke beemer guy once how to fix something but only once.
