I experienced this chicken different from the accounts given. For my first 18 years, I lived nearby on La Salle Ave. (near that park where Ice Cube made his music video - Normandie). Circa 1974, my parents would walk to Dino’s on Berendo for a chicken dinner that would feed the three of us. Like his daughters say, the man was cool to everyone. He’d offer them extra fries for my sake: “Here’s more fries. For the baby.” At the time, the chicken dinner was called “Pollo Maniaco” or Maniac Chicken. But my go to was their cheeseburgers. Something about their grill that made everything charbroiled taste so damn good. It’s from all those years of cooking on it. It’s why they tell you not to scrub your cast iron skillet. A generation of flavors was trapped on every bite of those burgers. Then the fries. . . Back then, restaurants cooked with lard and they were better for it. The fries were deep fried in that heavenly goodness. They weren’t crispy or dried. None of that. Their consistency was similar to double-fried fries. Soggy and delicious. I always asked them to pack my food to go (the diner wasn’t updated as it is today, and there were a lot of pigeons back then. My bro and I would joke about that, but…) because they would pack a small brown paper bag (the kind you brown bag your libation with) full of those fries and you instantly saw grease spots penetrating through the bag - good stuff. Thank you for this trip down memory lane.
Work near that location and loove going there. Line still wraps around the building. Pro tip: use gloves when eating the chicken and fries to get every piece of meat off the bone and so the juice won’t go all over the place
Ok remember dinos replacing jims in pico rivera. Everyone went there for like the first month cuz well, jims was gone and that was the closest thing we had. The chicken was a bit much for me at first. The fries were super thing and crispy. Not my thing. Food started to grow on my. The chicken is really good. Very spicy and has a lot of pepper. The greasy sauce that comes off the check is what the fries need to make them good. It makes them soggy and flavorful. Your lips will sting with this chicken but its good. Jims is back now and across the street. Theyre not as good as they were before but their food classic and their DUI is bomb. Overall both places have their golden child and bring in customers.
The owner made a video demonstrating how he makes his marinade. I have the link saved in my web browser of my old computer. I will post the link the next time I fire up my old rig.

In the 60s, 70s and 80s there weren't no central americans around it was Mexican all of LA. Y'all just started getting here in the late 1980s. Even the owners daughters said the recipe was started by Mexicans and Greek. And yes the chefs are Mexican from Puebla.
Hey I used to go here back in the day when I was working in the vicinity. I like the chicken and fries combo they are seasoned just right witch makes them have a mouth watering flavor and you do not need to add any tomato sauce🤣😎
