How can you really get rich quick.. are they being honest?
Welcome to the first video of my new series “Ruining the Internet” where I break down my least favorite parts about the internet. In this episode, I expose the get rich quick schemes sold by so many different gurus on the internet today.
I believe almost all of the people trying to sell you the “dream” are all bullshit. From Tai Lopez, and Dean Graziosi, to Hayden Bowles, and Sebastian Gheorghiu. To keep it 100 I bought a course from Ted McGrath an absolute nobody and a mega scammer. I just want to spread awareness and show people the lie scattered across all of these creators.
Pulled this from my notes so it’s rough but I think it’s important.
    Common things they say -
Have a come-up story explaining how they came from nothing and now have everything.
Always says it’s not a get rich quick scheme. Always have a “live” webinar that’s free that will show you how to become a millionaire
Says they want to teach you and give back
Says anyone can do what they do
Says they wanted more and they got more by learning
Says it was one small thing that helped create everything
If you're a vegan who enjoys a goof and a gaff this channel might be the place for you. I make content to entertain and to try to inform. I hope you liked this video!!
    Thank you for watching!!

Epic info man! We agree with you on the Gary Vee part. For any entrepreneur, or anyone running a small business, please do your research first and don't fall for any of these "Get Rich Quick" schemes or a "Faster" way to make more money. There is a ton of free content on UA-cam that can teach you almost anything; business, finances, how to run social media ads, how to grow a social media account (organically), marketing, sales, photography, cinematography, manufacturing techniques, lean manufacturing etc...the list never ends, you can learn anything...It just takes time.

BARBELL SAMURAI read the question and thought you were going to mention wine or books but selling viewers is a lot more interesting of a take. All I’ll say is you’re right, the more people watch him the more he builds his presence and that does lead to him gaining more business in a lot of areas even beyond his speaking engagements. Still to put watching his free content (whether you enjoy it or not) on the same level as selling a worthless course for $999 seems odd to me. If you don’t find any value in Gary’s free content you’ll find even less in a lot of these gurus premium content. I disagree with the notion he sells “you” his audience is just his leverage, a bargaining chip but he doesn’t sell his audience or monetize his viewers directly and I think that’s an important distinction. Nice thing is you can walk away hating Gary and thinking what he says is a pile of sh*t all without ever needing to spend a dime of your own cash. Interesting comment and thank for watching!!!

      @@FrankLaundry
Barbell Samurai is mostly right. Gary V's thing is to sell you, and himself, on the anyone-can-make-it mythology, which is the real product here. It is the MYTH that is the primary thing being sold, not the products themselves. The products (the stuff you actually pay cash for) are just a derivative of the myth. If the myth has been sold, then the cash product sales come naturally, effortlessly.
In Gary V's case the product, like Barbell just said, is Gary V himself or you might say the Myth of Gary V, including his speaking engagements, his public image, his social media presence, his large flock of enthusiastic converts/followers, his company and its services, etc. It starts with cultivating a large pool of gullible hopeful (and sometimes desperate-for-success) people to buy-in completely and, ideally, to begin selling themselves and others on the myth. Once the myth is established, the cash sales flow naturally.
And again, usually the guru is SELLING HIM/HERSELF on the ideas that he/she wants you to buy-in to, as well; that is integral to the whole thing. It would be very difficult to succeed without at least some measure of sincere belief. Psychopaths might be able to fake all the way through, but this is likely not typical. My own armchair assessment (what other kind is there, of something like this?) is that Gary V is not a psychopath; to a large extent he actually believes what he is saying. That would be in contrast to someone like Dean Graziosi, who is likely a psychopathic poser, liar, and true scammer. You'll note that I speak in terms of likelihoods, not certainties, because it is difficult at best (more often impossible) to know this stuff for sure.
Further: there is a paradox here, insofar as to be successful at all, in anything, it requires some "success consciousness" and a measure of pumping-up. This is why Barbell Samurai is incorrect when he says Gary V "provides nothing of value just rah rah you can do it chest pumping". No. The rah rah chest pumping is valuable. Just much much LESS valuable than he, and everyone, would like to think it is. In other words, the "bullshit" is not 100% bullshit, just 90%. You still have to get up every day and give yourself a rah rah chest pumping, in order to function well. You have to deal with your demons (expel that intrusive negative ideation), WORK, deal with more demons, WORK, etc., if you want to accomplish anything or even just survive. You won't become an internet millionaire, but you likely can and will survive, and maybe do better than just survive. And in today's (covid/post-covid) landscape, mere survival is going to be success, and better than survival is going to be BIG success.

alan2102 This perspective is interesting and really opened my eyes. Whether or not he is a scam he does open the floodgates for the other scammers around him in a lot of his content. In a lot of his content he does take issue with the fake gurus who are selling BS on the internet and he does say no online course or magic guru is going to get you where you want to go. He also says once someone doesn’t need to listen to him anymore that’s how he knows there on there way (I’m paraphrasing here haha). Still he doesn’t provide this context in all of this content and his old content may be the biggest offender in all of this as well. I will say putting out the amount of content he does naturally is going to lead to some videos lacking the necessary understanding that “making it big” is unlikely and that doesn’t excuse it and in an ideal world he would slow down and produce everything with the necessary context. You’re so right about them needing to sell themselves to you first and it’s scary that Gary is a position to convert so many people in his audience to dollar signs if he ever flipped to the dark side. Still, what Gary did for me and I’m sure for thousands of people, goes far beyond the rah rah chest pumping. Like I said in the video I was in the dupes of these scammers and caught in the “it’s so easy anyone can do it” mindset. I was avoiding actual work trying to make millions online and this lead me to such a bad spot. When I found Gary and heard him say I needed to work my face off, I needed to get that shitty job and push myself into a place where I had money and that all the online courses was bullshit I began to come out of my funk. At that point where I let go of everything and felt like such a failure Gary gave out his hand and helped me back up on my feet and Ik that means I have personal bias in this conversation but for those that need to hear what he has to say it can be life changing. I now don’t listen to Gary at all and not because I don’t like him but because I no longer need him and the biggest difference with Gary is the fact he doesn’t use his likability to directly monetize his audience with worthless and over priced info. Thanks for leaving such an in-depth comment and sharing a different opinion on the topic!!! Means a lot to me🙏🏾🙏🏾

Thanks for your reply. I am moved to write more on Gary V.
      you write:
"he does take issue with the fake gurus who are selling BS on the internet and he does say no online course or magic guru is going to get you where you want to go. He also says once someone doesn’t need to listen to him anymore that’s how he knows there on they are on their way"
YES, I have heard this kind of thing too and it is very good, i.e. Gary is telling the truth and should be commended for it.
I also agree that you don't get the full context in any one 10 minute Gary V video, nor could you, so it would be unreasonable to expect otherwise. You have to listen to 20 or 30 of his vids to get a decent take on what he is saying and pick up the subtleties. I also agree, as you further wrote, about his theme of how hard you have to WORK. This is true and very important, and it is one of the things that distinguishes him from, and elevates him above, the lower tier of the internet marketing (and related) hype crowd. I also appreciate your personal story and I can see that Gary can be a very useful figure for some people. All good.
Generally, Gary V is in-between, I would say. He has one foot in solid truth (like hard work, no magic pill, forget the expensive courses, etc.), and one foot in the other realm, of hypester/hucksterism. He is without question much better than those with both feet in that latter realm, and I give him credit for it. Just not too much credit. :-)
The downside is that, for example, while emphasizing correctly the import of hard work, he completely ignores numerous other success factors (see my list, separate comment on this video), and not only ignores them, but often dismisses and disparages them. He does this with comments just like in your video ("stop making excuses"), and often in his other videos, to the same effect. On one vid he said "stop blaming your mom", i.e. your parents, upbringing, early life experiences, etc. Well, sorry, but that's bullshit. Parents and upbringing are CRUCIAL, and if bad enough can scar and cripple you for life -- OR if good enough can give you a tremendous leg up with everything you ever try.
Same crucial nature inheres, to greater and lesser extents depending on specific item, in the other points on my list.
      - Low I.Q., like under 90? You are going to have a HARD TIME.
      - Really ugly and/or, if a man, short? You are going to have a HARD TIME.
      - Mildly autistic w/poor social skills? You are going to have a HARD TIME.
      - Low energy and low physical vitality (e.g. needing 9 hours sleep,
naps, etc.)? You are going to have a HARD TIME.
No one of those things is an absolute deal-breaker, but combinations of them can easily add up to being a deal-breaker, especially when each is severe. It is the total pattern, not any one thing, which will determine or significantly modify outcome.
Can you overcome with enough hard work, discipline, iron will, etc.? That is, can you compensate? Yes, to an extent, but there are limits to everything. No one has a completely indomitable will and endless discipline.
I am NOT saying that you should not work hard, and I am NOT advocating that anyone give up. I am suggesting that you be realistic in assessing your potentials, and that you maintain realistic expectations. And, frankly -- returning here to Gary V -- I fear that he does little to help people realistically assess their potentials. The rah rah is good, the encomiums to hard work are good; all good. But he ignores the other stuff, and actually puts it down; he suggests that you're a whiner and quitter if you pay attention to that stuff. That's ridiculous and out of touch with reality.
Dear Gary V: a guy with mild autism and no social skills, no friends or GF, none too bright, and low physical vitality, is NOT going to compensate for those things with lots of hard work and positive thinking, and then go on to be a $100,000/year internet marketer. Not gonna happen. That guy will be lucky to eke-out $10,000/year from his internet hobby business, while living on disability checks or perhaps in mom's basement. When that guy has a lousy life outcome, it is NOT -- NOTE WELL, MR GARY V -- because he is a lazy shirker who wants to "make excuses" and "blame mom". The problem is, Gary, that this guy was DEALT A BAD HAND IN LIFE, and now has to cope. There is plenty he can do to improve his situation, via hard work, positive thinking, etc., but it is limited. In NO WAY can he be compared to someone like you, Gary, a person of high intelligence, high social skill, extraversion, tremendous physical vitality, good-looking, articulate, from a family with resources (a successful business), and so on.
These are realities that Gary V does not want to see, and I don't blame him. I would rather not see them, either, but I can't do that. I can't unlearn what I've learned. I don't blame Gary for not wanting to see, but I do blame him for being consciously unwilling to see -- as I think he is. He is unwilling to see reality, because it is inconsistent with the narrative, the myth, that he wants to believe and promulgate. It is part of the classic American mythos of rugged individualism, anyone can make it if they just work hard enough, etc., and related memes such as the Just World Fallacy (look it up). Gary has bought-in to all that stuff, and he wants you to do so as well.
One more thing about Gary: his narcissism is a factor in his behavior. He LOVES to be in the spotlight, loves to be on stage, loves adulation. Whether or not he ever makes another dime (which he does not need now), he would love that stuff, b/c it feeds his ego and feels good. So I think Gary is in it partly just for his own ego gratification. This is another thing that distinguishes him from (and elevates him above) the average scammer in this space.
Much better to be merely egotistical and narcissistic (i.e. mere peccadilloes) than to be an outright thief, fraudster and liar (i.e. gross and mortal sins).
Gary V is mostly a good guy with a pretty good message, and I do appreciate his refreshing candor and inspirational quality and infectious energy and positivity -- all of which are most admirable. But, as I've pointed out, he has notable faults that unfortunately colors what he does.

I gauge myself on their " Free “ content but never put forth a cent, for anything they were selling. There’s just too much Free information out there now. Most of the courses and books these guys are now selling, are based on materials that other men had put together YEARS before...material that can now be downloaded for FREE over the internet.

These people aren’t in the finance industry. They are in the marketing industry. There is a clear distinction.

    • @FrankLaundry
      @FrankLaundry  4 роки тому +1

K A truth but as they are now “teaching” people how to create wealth they in a sense are providing financial advance to people directly and they’re making some pretty big claims relating to people’s personal finances. They are marketers but they’re now making millions trying to teach other people how to manage their money as it relates to starting and managing a business. They provide financial guidance to people attempting to do what they do and almost every sector of business requires marketing as well. These are marketers trying to teach other people how to make money so I think it’s fair to include them in the very broad finance realm. Thanks for your feedback👍🏾

I actually researched what it was and said BS. It was when I saw the course package fees that I realize they had fake marketing and the real profiting was coming from the actually course. The self help and life coaches do the same and use bad business projects as a cover. They will have some product that isn't even doing well and actually putting them in debt and will say that is how they got rich so no one knows they actually got rich of selling the course that is suppose to coach them in good habits that will make them rich. 😆😆

*Idk why they dont just teach the way they do it.. so I will tell you.*
    1. Borrow/Rent stuff out.
    2. Pretend to be rich. Photoshop if have to.
    3. Market it as being successful.
    4. Say that you know secrets.
    5. Hold 'free' seminars and take alot of pics so you appear to have power.
    6. Charge alot to ignorant/depressed people.
    7. Profit. Literally. If 50 ppl come the first and 10 ppl pay 5k. That's 50k in a few hrs. Than say that in a marketing vid with bs. "I make 50k in 2hrs, I can teach you as well. I come from blah blah." (hypnotizing 2hr speech.) Then sell again.
    8. these fools go and tell their friends and spread the message. Offer incetives.
    9. Market harder: Ads, models, rented cars, airbnb, plane trips, parties, follow and take a pic with a celeb, anything that represents the illusion of value.
    10. (Fake it till you make it.)
It's funny because they literally offer nothing. They have no product. It's just hypnosis. They just lead you on whilst milking your wallet. And then you have the most depressed ignorant fools there or even actors that convince you to fall for their trap, desperate men, kids even (18-25).
    *That's their literal formula.*
There I told you their secret. Why did you have to pay 5k+ for nothing?

They produce nothing, yet talk about how you can get rich doing something they themselves were not able to do. How to regulate the industry? Since making money online is not easy as it looks there is naturally more fakes than legit educators. I am glad we see more and more people talking about this but we need regulation. Fine print at the bottom of check out should not be a protection from legal actions. Micro print at the bottom where they say "success not guarantied" while marketing like it is guaranteed. Regulation cannot prevent scams but it should at least lower the percentage.

I unfortunately went to an event which was supposed to be hosted by this Dean Graziosi or whatever his name is. At the start of the event some guy went on stage and talked about stocks , then another about real estate, then one more came up and talked about something i dont remember. at the end, Everyone of them were pitching a get rich program for an average 1200$ each. Mr. Dean never showed up on stage instead they kept playing prerecorded clips of him pretending to be live from his home in florida or something. These jackasses were ripping people apart selling lies without any hint of shame or remorse. and the saddest part of it "people were buying that crap like crazy". Cant believe in this age of technology and information at our fingertips, we still need these D fcks to tell us how to be successful and be rich. Gary V at 14:10: "if anybody ever did it, then you can too". That is a LIE for the great majority of people. Correct statement: "if anybody ever did it, then they have great luck PLUS a whole bunch of advantages (see below) PLUS the energy, vitality and will to commit huge effort into making their thing a success. If YOU are among the tiny fraction of the population that has those three things (and remember that #2 is a whole LONG LIST itself), then you very well might be a big success".
Here's the long list of advantages, referred to above, with full detail and context: ua-cam.com/video/OjdSv7IUpYY/v-deo.html&lc=UgwMu1CnHFDzna1aa6l4AaABAg
THE LIST IN A NUTSHELL. Each one is very important. You don't have to have every one, but you have to have most. If you have a moderate to serious problem in more than 3-4 of these areas, success will come very hard, if it comes at all.
    - Social skills and emotional intelligence
    - Political and sales skills
    - Street smarts
    - Outgoing, extroverted, high-energy
    - No serious psychiatric problems
    - No autism/aspergers
    - No serious drug/alcohol problems
    - Superior general health, physical vitality
    - I.Q. over 100, prefer 110+
    - Middle-class background/family
    - Decent early family life: no serious violence, trauma, etc.
    - Good looks; for men: height
    - Circle of friends who each have MOST of the above themselves
NONE of these critical factors is EVER mentioned by the success gurus. None. Ever.
Why? It is obvious. They want you to get to the bottom of their funnel -- i.e. the place where you buy their gold-plated ruby-encrusted PLATINUM MASTER MIND LAMBO LIFESTYLE MARKETING AND MONEY MASTERY INNER CIRCLE blah blah blah blah. Only $3995.00, in four easy monthly installments of $999.00. Have credit card ready, this opportunity MAY NEVER BE REPEATED. lol
If they were to start talking about the real factors critical to success, you might not end up down that far in their funnel, and as a result it would cramp THEIR Lambo Lifestyle.
And, in fairness, it is probably true that many of these gurus have not developed sufficient self-awareness and analytic skill, combined with breadth of knowledge and experience, to be aware of all the things I listed above. (It took me FORTY YEARS to compile the above list, and it is still a work in progress.) The gurus might be, like most people, well-aware of most, foggily/incompletely-aware of others, and unaware of the rest. Or they might be aware, but authentically in denial about some of them. This is common because literally EVERYONE (including the scammers themselves) WANTS VERY BADLY TO BELIEVE in the bullshit: "if it happened to one guy, it can happen to you!". They WANT to believe that, hence they DO for the most part believe that, except for some glimmer of awareness, deep inside and well-hidden from themselves, that it is bullshit. The belief is of course aided by the fact that, on rare occasion, it actually does happen, just like on rare occasion someone wins the big lottery jackpot. One in 10 million. With internet businesses, it is a lot more than one in 10 million, but probably no more than one in a thousand get to a really high level (like 6-col income). And it might be more like one in 10 thousand.

    • @FrankLaundry
      @FrankLaundry  4 роки тому +2

alan2102 I agree with you on this. It’s very important people understand the entire picture behind success and realize that going from nothing to millions is an anomaly. The idea that “the guy next to me did it so I can too” puts people at risk for potential scams like pyramid schemes and online gurus. Still I think it’s important for people to try. I also think it’s important for people to understand all the options available. It’s a lot more probable to find a decent income and a happy life if one obtains a valuable degree or learns an in demand trade. Success is built of the backs of those who came before us (like parents who saved up to pay for their kids college or inheriting a family business) typically so for those in poverty a practical solution should be considered. People need to try and work hard to become better at those needed traits you mentioned. It’s also important to know when to call it quits which can be hard to do for a lot of people. It’s important for people to be self aware and to be aware of the world around them and to understand that maybe they aren’t going to be a famous actor but they might make a great accountant. It’s important to be practical and hard working and it’s important to try. The failures pave the way for success and I think I’m probably off topic now but you’re comment really inspired me to talk about the importance of pushing yourself and self correcting at all times. Thanks for all your great in-depth comments!! You’re providing so much value to me and I’m sure everyone else who reads your words. Your insight is much appreciated🙏🏾

Many of the requirements on this list are complete nonsense. I have millionaires in my family many of them don't even have half the factors on this list. A good portion of the 40+ existing millionaires did not even come from a middle class family. You don't need to be outgoing, the science of IQ is questionable as well as any other concept that comes out of the pseudoscience that is psychology, I'm not that extroverted and neither are many of the affluent members in my family. What they have is creativity, persistence and a strong work ethic. The one thing that bothers us the most is when people try to pin our success to luck. From my experience luck is a very poor business strategy. As for why many businesses don't become successful such generic numbers are of not of any help at all. What I have done as well as others in my family is analyze what the most common causes of failure are to begin with, and how they can be avoided. Personally I never paid much attention to statics myself, essentially because those people are not me. I use other's failure as a learning tool not as a source of pessimism. Further more you don't have to even own a business to become a millionaire my grandfather was an engineer his whole life and he retired with $7,000,000. He did it through a roth ira, investing in a 401k, and several other investments. His multiple streams of income made him rich overtime. The fact of the matter is that too many people know nothing about money. Also those same people are likely to not put in the time to perfect the skills needed to run and exceptional business. Many people just give up, or never really had a plan to begin with all they wanted was a fast path to riches. That is where I agree with you there is no fast and easy path to wealth.

@@AmazingStoryDewd Thanks for your reply, and thanks for making my point for me! You have millionaires in your family many of whom "don't even have half the factors on this list" -- which means that they DO have about half the factors on the list, and that is my point. My other point is that you cannot have very serious problems on more than a few of them and still be successful. As I wrote (did you read it?): "If you have a moderate to serious problem in more than 3-4 of these areas, success will come very hard, if it comes at all." I would be surprised if any of your self-made millionaires had a COMBINATION of serious drug/alcohol problem, personality disorder such as avoidant personality (or other), I.Q. under 90, etc., etc. Note: COMBINATION. It is not any one thing. ONE thing could perhaps be overcome; a combination, unlikely, and it becomes more unlikely in rough proportion to the number of areas of serious difficulty. I wrote that it is the total pattern that determines outcome, not any one thing.
Show me a short autistic guy with drug/alcohol problems and a traumatic childhood, (just to take a simple example), and I'll show you a guy who has an extremely hard time getting anywhere in life, even if he has a plus next to most of the other items. Is it POSSIBLE to overcome such a set of challenges and be successful anyway? Yes, possible. But very unlikely. One person in a zillion could bring to bear the indefatigable effort over a very long time that would be required to surmount those challenges and be successful.
You write that "A good portion of the 40+ existing millionaires did not even come from a middle class family." Yep. I'll believe that. But they had most of the other stuff, and did not have serious problems in several others.
You write that "You don't need to be outgoing". Yep. That's right, you don't. You just have to have most of the things on the list.
You write that "the science of IQ is questionable as well as any other concept that comes out of the pseudoscience that is psychology," That's woefully ignorant, I'm afraid. I.Q. is a very well-grounded, well-documented concept in psychology (much better than the rest of the field, some of which is as you say pseudo-science). I.Q. correlates VERY well with success, up to a point. For extremely smart people, upwards of 130 or 140, it changes because they are so much smarter than ordinary people that it becomes hard for them to communicate, and they have other problems, often causing under-performance in life. But below those levels, correlation with success is high. And at the other end, if your I.Q. is under, say, 85, you're going to have a very hard time, with rare exceptions (e.g. Les Brown). A person with an I.Q. of 85 might be able to do some things very well, like be a good craftsman, carpenter, whatever, but will never succeed in a complex business venture or high-level profession.
You write that "I'm not that extroverted and neither are many of the affluent members in my family." Yep. I'll buy that. Extroversion is just ONE thing, and it helps but is not itself a deal-breaker/maker. It needs the context of pluses on most of the rest of the list.
You write that "What they have is creativity, persistence and a strong work ethic." Yep. Those are all factors too. I was trying to compose a list of success factors APART from what is directly and immediately controllable, like intensity of effort and persistence. I was not saying that hard work does not matter; in fact I said more than once (either this post, or adjacent) that hard work is VERY IMPORTANT. Just that there are all these other things that are given no attention, even though they are, IN SUM, as important as hard work.
I also agree with you that "too many people know nothing about money" and many do not "put in the time to perfect the skills needed to run an exceptional business." True enough. Knowledge, and application of that knowledge, are important too. Those things go with hard work as factors that you can control to a large extent; those things are derivatives of hard work (or should be). The point of my list was to highlight the many crucial things that you cannot control.
You write that "Many people just give up, or never really had a plan to begin with". True. People do sometimes screw up and deny themselves the success that they COULD achieve with their particular array of pluses on the list. And, many people give up who should give up, because they have too many minuses and not enough pluses. The deck is stacked against them from the start, and conventional success is a chimera. They might as well give up, downshift, settle-in to a low-power job and learn to live very frugally. A great many people fit this description -- the extravagant promises of the self-help gurus notwithstanding. (Need I add that said self-help gurus have EVERY reason to deny what I just said, and many of them have actually convinced themselves that what I say is false? Self-help gurus have a very heavy investment -- emotional, intellectual, and usually financial -- in believing that ANYONE CAN SUCCEED. That's the myth, and they HAVE to believe it.)
Thanks again for your reply. I appreciate the confirmation.
