      If you can find time to meet with a professor or go to the gym for upwards of an hour, you can definitely find time for your friends. If you have terrible time management skills, that's not the school's fault - that's on you.

      Hey Dave, I'm planning on attending a technical college that has a 2 year diploma program with a good reputation in my province in Canada. From my research, most people who come out of the program find it very helpful in acquiring an entry level job. My only concern is that the diploma program is very concentrated on the practical side of programming and very light on the computer science and theory aspect. Do you think it is feasible to self-teach the theory aspect of computer science and if so, what resources do you think are the best currently available to aid in doing so?

    • @DaveXiang

      +kailun x
      I actually did an integrated program, so graduate life felt the same as undergraduate life. I just had to take 8 extra engineering courses over a year. The integrated program doesn't feel like real graduate school life, it felt more like undergrad. There was no PHD, no thesis paper, etc. An "Integrated" graduate program is just an extension on undergrad. I don't think I can speak well to a real graduate school experience.

    • @DaveXiang
      @DaveXiang  8 років тому +3

      +alexander babich
      Ah, that's a little tricky. Really no idea on? I think if that ever happens, you might have missed some concepts from earlier assignments. I'm not sure what kind of classes you might be taking Alex, but it's rare to really have no idea. Maybe check out some of the earlier ones and see if you missed some core concepts? The professor, if he's good at all, wouldn't give a crazy assignment beyond the scope of what people should know. That's a tough question, I don't know really.

      Those major are different a bit, but you can definitely overlap. If you really know you want to do software, I would do Computer Science and take some computer engineering courses that interest you. Or vice versa, I'm sure that will also work well.

      Yea for sure. You just have to manage your time well. If you don't manage the time well, you just lose more of it and don't have time for hobbies and gaming. You shouldn't have to pull all-nighters, etc. There were some people though who dropped out because they gamed too much. That also happens a lot. haha

      Hey MoneyCash, you don't need a program specifically for "software engineering" to pursue that in your career. Pick what interests you, preferably what you like that's related to engineering / software! Computer science, Information system, computer engineering, etc. OR you find a program specifically with software engineering.

    Hey Dave a question about the rigor level at cmu. My son wants to study Computer Engineering but he has a full ride at an easier abet accred institute/university. The problem is that this other uni doesn't have as great a name/reputation as CMU has. He is worried if he can handle the rigor so I'm not sure how you can help me with this question but I figured that perhaps scores might be a slight indicator for you to be able to help judge if he should even bother registering. satmath=760, satreading=630, gpa=3.87/4.

    • @DaveXiang
      @DaveXiang  7 років тому +6

      Hey. Thanks for your question. Has your son got an acceptance into CMU? I'm not sure of your situation, but here is my opinion. The full-ride is very nice, CMU is very expensive. That is a financial decision to make. CMU, most likely, is on a much higher level than the accredited university. CMU, MIT, etc. really do have world-class level programs for a reason. I do also strongly believe that the reputation and name of CMU carries enough weight for the rest of life that it will make it worth it to try to go there.
      Finally, CMU's baseline is very hard. If you take harder classes, you can make it harder for yourself. You can also get by with the minimum, but it will still be hard. It's really hard to judge it from high school SATs score, but those are pretty strong. I got an 800 math and 690 reading. Those scores really don't mean much though. Whatever your son has been through now, going through engineering school is going to just be really different. If he's up for the challenge, I would say just go and let him realize how hard it is and he'll learn to overcome it ( hopefully ).
      Best of luck to you

  • @syth406
    @syth406 7 років тому

    I get the impression that the best way to go is to look for schools where your standardized test score and GPA are at the 3rd quartile of the last year's accepted freshmen. That way you don't get burned out feeling like a dumbass and become disengaged but there's enough room to expand and compete that (again) you never get disengaged.
