Yes we've planned to also paint the bulwark blue and the caprail grey. But we might switch back to white with the two component coating. Currently the darker color is the better choice since white shows every rust stain and needs a better surface preparation. Something we will do in the future.
Wish you would think about the sails again! And not making any square sails on the rigging , how are the two of you going to sun up and down the sails , square sails need more work and are useless going to weather !
Square sails are less work on longer passages, faster down the wind and a square rigger meant for sailing and not only for show can sail decently well upwind. We intent to sail the ship with about 12-15 people.
Out of all the boat renovations I watch on utube, yours is the one I look forward to the most. I’m not just saying that. . It’s hats off to you two and the other ones, I don’t think I would like to take on what you all are doing. 👍👍👍👍
Good strategy for keeping the waterline where it needs to be throughout the restoration. Once you know where the final waterline will be, get the yard to weld 3 - 5 cm strips roughly every meter at the waterline so it will be easy in the future to know where to mask-up for painting. I used Hempels two pack hempadur for undercoating (two coats) and Hempels two pack polyeurothane for finishing (two coats). Below the waterline, hempels two pack hempadur (three coats), a single component tie coat and then a commercial grade antifoul (again, two coats). Flying Coney looks good in the new paint scheme. It is hard work to restore these vessels and you are persevering. Enjoy! I am approaching eight years into my restoration (67 foot Dutch North Sea beam trawler (steel)). Not quite there yet but I hope to be ready mid to late 2025. Good luck, I thoroughly enjoy watching your progress.
Great to see the ship shaping up so beautifully! All the hard work is clearly paying off. I hope to cross paths on the water someday when you're back in the Netherlands!
Same to you! The green color was the topic of the day in the whole town. Usually the choice is red, blue or black. But the green really makes a huge difference.
Barbara, you look absolutely gorgeous! You certainly have put in the hours, yet in the long run it'll be worth your effort. We are all wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Well done - what a milestone! Flying Coney looks wonderful. I was admiring the beautiful lines of her hull during these excellent painting sessions. Merry Christmas! 🎄
Had a neighbor that had a 1953 Willy's wagon. It was two tone, white up top and a kinda seafoam green on the lower half. Made me think of that, I always loved that look.
Next time you paint the hull and want to protect zincs and propeller, you might want to try applying a coat of brushed-on heated Vaseline. It will wear off after the boat is relaunched.
The boat next to us was one of our neighbors for the past 2 years. Speaking about volume and displacement Flying Coney is by far the biggest boat on UA-cam. I don't know if you watch other refit channels but although Yaba is currently a few feet longer over spars we're three times heavier. Sarinda from Ship happens is about half of our displacement and we're about four times the size of Tally Ho. I'm just saying this because the size brings some challenges and it's just a different kind of project. Bigger doesn't mean better but for what we want to do with the boat, sailing with up to 15 people, you need a sailing ship that size.
@FlyingConey i can only imagine the amount of work this brings. Only when you see her next to another big boat you have a sense of her real size as a viewer
I faced a tough challenge when I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, but I decided to start a channel and focus on that direction. Unfortunately, I haven’t made much progress yetbvfw
You guys are doing great. So fun to watch the progress. Only thing I would suggest is not painting out of a tray. use a 1,2 or bigger bucket and grid. much faster and less chance of spillage!
I would not worry about the waterline as the displacement changes with every episode. Instead just concentrating on having enough displacement to maintain stability.
Most, if not all of the weight we've taken off is above the center of gravity. So we're increasing the stability. The problem is that the weight is no concentrated around the engine room with all the heavy equipment in there. So the bow comes up quite a bit.
Wonderful job mate. Flying Coney starts looking very beautiful ❤🎉 one thing I wonder, once you cut the update back cabin waterline probably will change again 🤔
Such a narrow tape… I apply tape for the waterline etc but it’s always too narrow, I usually succeed in mishandling the roller so that a bit of bottom paint goes above the tape…. Well done, there!
These are keel cooling pipes and currently they're cooling the engine. We will hook up the generator and a heat pump in the future. It's basically a large radiator and the benefit is that it is a closed system with no sea water in the ship.
The green looks good, but my understanding is copper sheet was not used on iron or steel hulls for electrolysis reasons. The steel or iron hull would sacrifice to the copper. So I'm not sure if the green color is authentic.
Yes, copper sheeting wasn't used on steel ships. But the early bottom paints were already available in different colors with a tendency to those matching the look of the copper sheeting or a traditionally tared hull. So mostly green, black or red. Red because most paints contained Copper Oxide that has a red color. So I guess that red was the pragmatic choice and green the more aesthetic one.
The ship got a new keel cooling in 2018. The hole was from a previous one were the pipe was alongside the keel on both sides. A part like that will never rust through, we had some issues with electrolysis but not so much with rust.
The "water line" is not a trivial paint demarcation. It is a legal definition of the load lines. Changing it means reclassification, new stability measurement, all that good stuff. It is considered "Fraud" to move it secretly. Moving it up creates more payload, moving it down (and taking less ballast) improves speed and economy. Both compromise safety.
We're registered as a pleasure craft and not one of our official documents mentions the waterline length. Anyway, we're simply changing the hight of the antifouling so that doesn't change the official waterline. we're not required to have a stability book and for our registration the only thing that matters in the LOA excluding removable spars. Yes we're by removing equipment the boat gets lighter but everything we've removed is above the center of gravity so stability should improve even though we float about 10cm higher. More at the bow, less at the stern. What you're saying might be true for commercial crafts or in countries were the load line length is taken as a measurement for registration.
Will you have to move the chocks so you can paint there, also underneath the keel. How come you don’t spray the black colour as well? Love all your videos👍👍
I believe that the aft cabin is the only livable space on the boat at the moment. They're probably gonna have to build out cabins below deck before it can be removed.
There are special paints made for propellers but in fresh water it's not really necessary. Or in other words we didn't had problem with growth on the prop and also we haven't seen anybody else applying it in the shipyard.
Das Dschunken- Rig ist recht modern und hat natürlich einige Vorteile. Es ist recht günstig und lässt sich mit kleiner Mannschaft bedienen. Also perfekt für SV Seeker.
The new paint job looks really great, but you need to take it further; you need to repaint the name. That lettering looks so amateurish it appears to have been done by a child. Flying Coney deserves to have its name painted with the same level of excellence that's gone in to restoring everything else..
It bothers us that we hadn't had the opportunity to repaint the bulwark and apply a good looking name. In the shipyard it's too high up and we can't reach it. Once the weather is suitable for painting it's the first thing on the list.

Love the new color! , it really goes well with the dark blue. Are going to paint the rest of the hull blue?
Yes we've planned to also paint the bulwark blue and the caprail grey. But we might switch back to white with the two component coating. Currently the darker color is the better choice since white shows every rust stain and needs a better surface preparation. Something we will do in the future.
Colors look great the boat look’s ready for the seas

Fashion people say blue and green should never be seen, but what do they know. Boat looks terrific. Well done.
I like the new color!
You couldn’t pick a better colour. Flying Coney loves it.
The color looks great ! She is beautifull !!
Thank you very much. We can't wait to have the whole hull freshly painted.
Love the music guys ❤ 5:46
Merry Xmas. 🇬🇧🫡
Thank you very much and we hope you can celebrate a wonderful Christmas together with your loved ones!

Merry Christmas 🎄. I love the new colors. Thank you 🙏
It’s funny how the boat looks different when you look at it from a different angle. 👍👍👍
Merry Christmas. Love the new color...................................>

The colors remind me of Tidewater boats I worked on as a younger man.
You are both incredible

wonderful colour 👌
nice!

Love the Color, nice job! She looks huge compared to the ship next to her btw.

Hi guy! Just an observation for you. UA-cam is running some impressive adds during your show, including an add for Burberry! Nice😎

Cool colors. I am curious about the pipes along the bottom Coney, what are they for ?
These are keel cooling pipes and currently they're cooling the engine. We will hook up the generator and a heat pump in the future. It's basically a large radiator and the benefit is that it is a closed system with no sea water in the ship.

@2:38 Um why is there a notch / hole cut into the keel? Was that just rusted through and had to be cut out, or was there something attached?
The ship got a new keel cooling in 2018. The hole was from a previous one were the pipe was alongside the keel on both sides. A part like that will never rust through, we had some issues with electrolysis but not so much with rust.
Ben , Barbara both of you have done what so few could achieve . You have made Flying Conny look sexy .

when do you anticipate cutting off the ugly aft cabin .... that will really transform the ship to look traditional again .
I believe that the aft cabin is the only livable space on the boat at the moment. They're probably gonna have to build out cabins below deck before it can be removed.
Don't you need to clean the chalk off before the primer?
Would’ve it made any difference if you had paint on the propeller. Or is it just cosmetics 👍👍
There are special paints made for propellers but in fresh water it's not really necessary. Or in other words we didn't had problem with growth on the prop and also we haven't seen anybody else applying it in the shipyard.
Agreed, the name needs to be done properly.
Please re-letter your boat, it looks like a grade school art project. Merry X mas & Happy New Year.
Yes we will do once it's warm enough for painting again.
💪🦾🤝🏻🎉❤
Bitte schlagt mich nicht, aber: Habt ihr mal darüber nachgedacht, eine Dschunken-Takelung zu probieren?

@@FlyingConey Danke für die Antwort und gutes Gelingen bei diesem Vorhaben!
Hmmmm?
Summer sunny weather and all dressed for warm conditions. That cant be nov/dec in Holland.
Why s that old stuff?
Dont know if Europe dont use prop speed paint for prop. Have seen others use it. Seems to be god
I know the product but as long as we're moored in fresh water not really necessary.
You missed a spot.
Good eyes. Not really missed it but shortened the painting intervals too much.
The new paint job looks really great, but you need to take it further; you need to repaint the name. That lettering looks so amateurish it appears to have been done by a child. @@FlyingConey Glad to hear that's on your list, and I understand why it's not a real high priority.
Exactly my thoughts... get a proper sign writer to paint the name etc on her.... it looks terrible with a new paint job, & the "wonky name" !!!
I hope you are going to change the name; it really does not look good the way it is right now.
