  • The Sony RX10 II is a great camera for novices, and this combination review/tutorial will help you understand its features and functions with a minimum of tech talk. The video is produced in 4K. My apologies, it is a 20 Mp sensor (not 24 as stated).

    Thank you! Exactly what I needed, have now ordered RX10ii here in Australia, chosen for portability as well as its qualities. Will watch this review repeatedly, to learn all the capacities of this camera. Superb communicator, touch of humour. Will follow your future reviews of all new products, if just to enjoy intelligence and clarity at work!

    amazing, detailed but still a thoroughly enjoyable video!! one small point to make here. In the beginning, you said that it is a 24mpx sensor, although many photography sites are quoting 20mpx! Would you be so kind as to clarify!! thanks once again for the review. It's been a pleasure to watch. And your effort in making the video less technical and funny is very commendable as this camera is intended for both pro and amateur use. keep up the good work!!

    Really excellent review. Very nice voice, nicely paced and very informative. I have a Pentax DSLR but now just want a camera to pick up and go, to travel with, that will do everything. Great to have a lens with a respectable focal length that is capable of excellent macro too. Did consider the RX10iii for the longer zoom, but at £1300 it's a bit out of reach-and 200mm is fair enough anyway. And with great video too, it looks like a fun camera to have for almost any occasion. And as you say, even 1 inch sensors today are capable of some fantastic images. Oh, and the weatherproofing is just the icing on the cake!!Thank you for a very comprehensive and pleasingly presented review, :)

    Great detailed review. I use the rx100iv, but I'd like the rx10ii for its lens and weather resistance. Rx10ii would be great for travel or recording events. One small opinion, is that 4K actually works great for 1080HD tv's/monitors and you would see a perceived difference. Downscaled 4K video in this camera series offers much more sharpness/detail than using in body 1080. Downside to 4K, is that it uses a ton of memory, and requires a newer computer to edit. I wish the camera offered 2.7K 60p as an option, like the GoPro Hero 4 black. 2.7K 60p would provide much better motion than 30p for action and more detail/clarity than 1080. Thanks!

    Excellent instructional video. Does the RX10 II have an exposure level bar, that goes from plus (+) to minus (-) to indicate proper exposure, besides the zebra level indicator? Have it on my Nikon, and really helpful when shooting stills...

    Maarten; As far as you know, is there a wide angle adapter that can be used with the MKII?
    I used this camera for some real estate photography, and the 24mm lens just didn't cut it, for some of the smaller rooms.
    My previous camera was the Nikon D5200, and when used with the Tokina 11-16mm lens, the pictures were just what the client wanted.

    The RX10 II is really nice, awesome features. The price isn't bad either, the Full Frame cameras are just too expensive imo, and I think they are out of reach for most novice or entry level photography.
    So the RX10 II is like a more advanced version of the M4. Which is nice, at least it has a shoe mount, and accessories which is a criticism I have of the M4 not being able to use accessories.
    Although I'll stick with my AX100, still the best out there.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      +Marth Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Although I agree that full frame cameras are expensive, I don't feel they're out of reach, they just don't serve a need for the majority of photographers. Some of my favourite pictures, blown up to 60x90cm are from one inch sensor cameras, and as Sony shows here, they can certainly compete in terms of features and functions - after all there's not much that's different here from the firmware in the A7 series.
      Although it has a great deal in common with the M4, which is a very nice and small camera, the addition of longer 4K recording here makes the RX10m2 a preferred choice. Of course, for video, the AX100 is the preferred choice.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  3 роки тому

      It's most likely the white balance. Set it to auto.

  • @danieldougan269
    @danieldougan269 Рік тому

    This camera is tempting, but I have some issues that need to be worked out.
    1) 30-minute video recording limit. If this is to truly replace a camcorder, I would want to record longer for event work like weddings.
    2) Single SD card slot...I would like two for backup in case a card gets corrupted.
    3) If it went to 300mm instead of 200, I could like it more. I know subsequent models go to 600mm but not at f2.8 and not with built-in ND filters. I could live with the f2.4-4 at 600mm if they didn't also remove the ND filters.
    4) No phase-detect autofocus. I know the RX10 IV has it, but that is again compromised in terms of the lens and lack of ND filters.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Рік тому

      This camera does not meet your requirements. I suggest you look at other models.

    • @jameslees1169
      @jameslees1169 Рік тому

      Hi Daniel,
      1) You can remove the 30 minute recording limit on the RX10 II and others. I've done it on mine after watching this....ua-cam.com/video/6gCRLbAYX94/v-deo.html
      2) I've only ever had one corrupted video clip using a hacked GH2. I haven't had one on the RX10 II or any other camera I have owned. Always format the SD card prior to use. I've been using three Lexar 64GB SDCX V60II 250MB/s 1667x cards for a few years now and never had an issue. A second SD card slot is a convenience but not necessary.
      3) I did not upgrade to the M3 or M4 versions for two reasons; the M2 has a constant f2.8 aperture across the zoom range and inbuilt ND filters. It's also significantly cheaper than the latter two models. This model hits the sweet spot across all four models in my opinion.
      4) Which is of more importance to you here? In terms of value for money I think the RX10 II is a great option for most.

    Thanks for your fast reply. I think you helped me decide. I think I should get FE 24-240mm for my A7 but it is a Sony not Zeiss Lens. It would make the A7 with this lens 100g heavier than RX 10 IV. I can buy it at B&H and test for couple of weeks and see if my pictures are not blurred and I can hold it steadily.
    Do you think I am making the right decision? Marcela

    Maarten;
    With re; to the LCD screen on the RX10 II.
    When viewing, (or reviewing) I have a black border on the right side of lcd screen, but not through the viewfinder.
    I have tried changing the aspect ratio, but that does not solve the issue.
    I also connected a monitor, (HDMI) and black border does not appear on monitor screen.
    Is this normal re; the lcd screen?
    Thanks again.

      I don't remember that (and I return the cameras after the review, so can't check).
      Can you verify at the dealer if that's specific to your unit?

      I've both. I could say that RX10m4 outperforms RX10m2, the only thing better on RX10m2 is the constant aperture, size and ND filter. The best thing is the autofocus on the mark 4, so accurate on video and photo.
      Price wise, I got the mark 2 for $400 and it's a super camera even today and I guess 3 years more.

    My goal is to travel with one camera and one lens. I need the FE 24-240 mm for a trip with a wild life, like Galapagos (I will not get the birds, with that lens ☹️) I am taking tours, I cannot use the tripod. For travel without the wild life I can use FE 24-70 mm. Thanks for your help. Marcela

      I use an Atomos Shogun and record from the HDMI output. I also use a set of rails with two quick release plates to mount two cameras together, shooting the screen with a macro lens. More details in my blog: heilbron.com/sony-rx10-ii-dsc-rx10m2-hands-on-review-in-4k/

      You are likely in PAL mode. Use the settings to change to NTSC, which provides those modes, but may, depending on your geography render your camera incompatible with your TV set (but not your computer).

    Any reason why you would not be at 2.8 aperture during the dark live concert? Isn't that the selling point of the constant 2.8? Asking for a friend.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому +1

      Tell your friend that the widest aperture is fine, but requires a more accurate focus. If you really want the lights to sparkle, smaller apertures (F16 and up) are best. Use spot meter on faces for exposure.

    Maarten please help me to choose. I love your review and I would like to buy this camera for traveling and taking pictures of wild life. The camera weighs 1.79 lbs/813 g (62mm) The new RX IV. Weighs 2.41lbs/1O95g (72mm). I am small, weigh 105 lbs, I am afraid that RX IV would be too heavy for me to handle. I am taking still pictures most of the time, a short video rarely.
    Are the stills the same quality taken by RX II as RX IV? Would I be buying a 4 year of technology?
    I shoot RAW and I have Sony Alpha A7 now with 24-70mm that is not that good for taking pictures of wild life. Please help me to decide.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому

      I appreciate your kind words, thanks. Only you can judge what is too heavy for you. The stills are more or less the same quality. The primary difference is the lens. Although I appreciate that the A7 might be heavier - that is a substantially better sensor and should provide higher quality images. I'm not sure why you feel it's not good for wildlife photos - maybe it's just a longer lens that you need - although I realize that will add to the weight.
      One issue that you will find is that images taken with the A7 can be cropped more than images taken with the smaller one inch sensor of the RX10 series. I hope this helps.

    • @sang3Eta
      @sang3Eta 4 роки тому +1

      The iv has faster focusing and longer lens so would be better for wildlife photography. The real benefit of the ii is its low.weight though more like 850g with battery. I recommend the Nikon Coolpix p510 to people that need a light bridge camera 550g. 42x Nikkor ED VR lens but old now so only 1080p and smaller image sensor.

    What camera has better image Quality for cinematic style vídeo: RX10 M2 or A6000? Im looking for My first camera.
    My priority it's Image Quality, all other features are Nice but it's not My priority

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  3 роки тому

      If 4K is important to you, the A6000 does not support that. Otherwise, the larger sensor and the ability to select the appropriate lens for a situation or scene, make it the better choice for cinematic production. But also consider the A6100, which adds features like 4K, cine gammas, HLG and S-Log. ua-cam.com/video/h48hMeB6sS4/v-deo.html

      I actually dont know if I have ordered it now. I have registered on the website; integrate my passportcodes and paypal account. Than I have connected my camera with wifire and tried to order it through my camera BUT after i press on button order, they want me to verify my age, after i entered all the codes of my passport, instead of giving me an information if i have ordered it now or if have make a mistake, it just repeat this all, so i ordered it 3 times now and give 3 times my passport codes. sorry for my words, but im done with theses bastards, i dont know if have ordered it now or what is the matter now. And thank you for your help Mister. Sony should pay you for your help

      Well, pretty sure that you can't order it twice, so I'm assuming it's missing something. You can also connect the camera to a computer using the Sony supplied USB cable (other USB cables may not work). Using the playmemories site may be a little simpler. Then you can download to the camera through the computer. Hope this helps, let me know.
