The erinyes will try to trick the party into capturing the succubus by acting as an angel, telling them of the horrible things the succubus has done. With enough clues the party can figure out that the "angel" is actually an erinyes and then will save the succubus. Another terrific and fun exploration! I always love that you delve into the earlier editions of D&D to flesh out your subjects raison d'être. Personally, I wonder if a historical view might be a good addition? For example, the Erinyes are a Greek myth. Basically, the Furies from ancient myth, gods of vengeance. Just a thought. :)
Dude the sponsored videos are great just like the rest of them! I'm glad you have found a way to get paid to do something your good at. Keep up the good work!
Apologies for long comment but I saw you hammering the succubus lore you gave as it but I had to point this out: This fallen angel succubus explanation for their creation is based on one article made during 4th ed that was basically retconed by the other lore from the novels about cosmology introduced around time of 5e; malcanthet, a demon princess, making a deal to save here kind from Asmodeus after getting(reclaiming?) godhood and yeet-ing the abyss away... also the fiendish codex and dragon mag 353 (along with what the consensus seemed to be in 2e) which already fully established their creation myth. It said "they spontaneously formed in the flesh pits of the abyss without the aid of sibrexes or obrynth lords" after armies of eladrin invaded the abyss and nearly wiped them out. Firstly abyssal origin here with their duality coming later on. Secondly, it's less retcon heavy than saying the angel thing is it. I get some like it because it's based on real world lore but it's one writer trying to explain the retcon controversy with another one vs 20+ years of lore and the most recent stuff. Plus we have enough examples of angels turned fiends in the lore with the erinyes, one of Asmodeus' "origins" and Zariel.
Side note of a personal theory/explanation opportunity that wizards has missed if they are leaning into the "demons who's queen made a deal with THE devil for free reign" route. There's some heavy implication they are the result of the battles of eladrin and obrynth and their blood mixing in the flesh warping nature of the plane creating a demon that embraces mortal beauty. Look at the trends they've been dancing around since 3e: They look like elves(paragons of beauty), with similar ears and facial features, but with a fiendish spin, elves are a race of the blood of a god who was relevantly a shapeshifter, it's recently elaborated they have had the ability to swap genders at dawn from the god(unsure how recent it was), and they are mortals who procreate which explains succubi adapting this when they were first spawned vs being made of non diety celestials who generally don't procreate that way. That's way more fascinating/ has inadvertently been implied more throughout the editions.
Thanks for all the awesome videos it great to watch this during quarantine since I can't do anything during summer break. Also can you do a video on Lycanthropes?
probably, not a mother but a very good looking for her age granny, direct offsprings of fiend and mortal are called cambions and they are more powerful than normal mortals.
Ooooo I cannot wait to introduce a session involving these beauties! Muahahaha! I'm DMing the "Tyranny of Dragons" campaign. They would fit perfectly in a good scenario.
My Tiefling Ranger through a series of unfortunate events became Ascended from a low born Fiend to a Devil Prince, under Asmodeus. So my Tiefling may end up as Erinyes, so perfect timing.
The Erinyes (Ερινύαι, plural mind you) were three godly entities of vengeance in ancient Greek myths. They appeared as old winged women with snakes tangled in their hair (like Γοργώ, Medusa, and her sisters). Their names where: Αληκτώ (she who howls) Μέγαιρα (the jealous one) Τισιφόνη (she who punishes murder/ with murder) I have no idea how they were twisted into fallen angels *of both genders* but, then again, they did also sh*t on nymphs by making them elementals of beauty and by having Dryads not be a subspecies of them.
I assume what happened was that the Erinyes in older editions *were* an all-female group of Devils/Fallen Angels (or something similar) but for 5th Ed they changed it so there could be male Erinyes because they felt them being all-female made them too similar to the Succubi.
@@CollinBuckman But Succubi are also not all female, they change sex depending on who they want to seduce (their male forms being the Incubi), something based of medieval folklore mind you. In general, the whole concept of them in D&D is weird, except for them being lawyers and vengeful hunters of those who have sinned, this is entirely what they do in the Oresteia. In the end they even gain the name Ευμενίδαι (kindly ones), an ironic term that was meant to appease them.
The fact people hate raid sponsors is well received but it's nice to know you do actually play it yourself making your own sponsorship a lot more palatable
Now is a great time to do a Morkoth guide before critical role reveals the big bad! I am sure many people will be googling what it is! Would love to see that.

The Erinyes are probably my favorite lower planes creature. They have the cool fallen angel lore, the amazonian battle colony lifestyle, plus one of the truest forms of lawful. Way superior to succubus who don't even get your rocks off.
6:46 Only issue... avacyn IS an angel not fallen(unlike gisela and Bruna). She was specifically made to protect the humans of innastrad from the vampires. She doesn’t really fit the bill here.
Imagine an anime with a ditzy erinyes making a contract with a estranged mortal and it turns out the mortal gains demonic power equivalent to arch dukes/dutchess without the mind bring totally corrupted and all sorts of shenanigans and epic battles in the nine realms happen.
I know this would be massive and take lots of time, but would you ever consider doing a video or series of videos about the entire overall history of the Forgotten Realms?
Hey mate, would you be able to do a video on the different hags? I think for a creature as ancient as them, and how connected they are to each other, it might be very interesting to dive into. Cheers for taking the time to read this.
Actually some further in-depth erinyes lore can be found in the Brimstone Angels series of books regarding some side characters. Unfortunately this is also based on 4e lore where cosmology is horribly screwed up and erinyes are simply brutish, but some of the dynamics is at least interesting.
*Someone ends up in hell* "I was lied to! I sold my souls and recieved nothing!" "You didn't get anything? Can i see your contract?" "..." "Well let's begin legal procedure" "Wait, you have justice system here?" "Yes, we are devils not monsters"
My Greek mythology says to keep your distance if you want to stay alive. Where's my great bow? Gonna shove an arrow the size of a shovel in them. Oh crap. Faustian pacts. Yep. Alright boys, load the great bows and get me my hammer.
So wait in regards to the “physical comfort” portion of this video, when an Erinyes “lies” with a non devil entity I imagine the resulting offspring would be much like with a Succubus or an Incubus some form of a Cambion, with probably slight physical characteristics of their Erinyes parent. But if an Erinyes “comforts” with another devil, the results are a pure blooded Erinyes that unlike a Cambion offspring will be completely raised in the Hells? Am I misunderstanding this fact/implication or no, I’m merely curious. Edit: I wish we had more lore on these gals, they’re so fascinating to me.
They aren't *suppose* to be based of them they ARE based of them, all the way to the lawyers bit ( yup the spirits of venguance were lawyers at some point)
In the forgotten realms books about the Tyfling sisters Farideh and Havilar one of the main characters is a Cambion and the only son of a leading erinyes of the hells. Reading them you get alot of information on erinyes in the nine hells. Especially, you find out that the physical appearance of the erinyess was changed by Asmodeous since his rise to godhood during the Sundering. For example, they are now described as having steel hooves and NO wings. Even if you don't want to check these books for information incase they are not YET canon I recommend all these books starting with BRIMSTONE ANGLES and ending with THE DEVIL YOU KNOW. They are some of the BEST Forgotten Realms novellas I have ever read. GREAT characters.
What I never understood, was that Erinyes in d&d are always depicted as female. If you look at the books. They are never said to be male or female only. Yet almost all depictions are female. Is this because of an older edition? In real world mythology they are all female. But the real life Erinyes are more known as furies. Succubi have this too. When speaking about Succubi and Incubi they are always called succubi. "the Erinyes appear as male or female humanoids with statuesque builds and large feathery wings" is a quote from players handbook.
I know you said they can only work/exist as a servant of asmodeus but I'm curious if there were any instances in the lore of fallen angels ever serving other devils or demons. Or just a rogue angel with no particular alliance.
All devils are servants of asmodeus, even if they pledge allegiance to other archdevils. Edit: While this is true, this doesn't apply to Erinyes. See Max G4's below mine.
@@notrod5341 Hmm, I know Asmodeus is number 1, but would a rival like mephistopheles accept a the service of a someone that is either of Asmodeus or serves him?
My long-running campaign revolves around a singular tavern located in a bustling port town on a large island continent. The tavern owner is a well respected and sometimes feared woman who winds up involved in almost every story in some capacity: she points you to a quest-giver, you have an item to deliver to her, she has a random item to give to you, she has an important piece of information you need, or she just needs a favor, to name just a few. In the five years this static world has existed, no less than 15 different parties have passed through the tavern and had their lives changed forever by the experience in some way. The owner is an erinyes that has long-ago fled from the infernal realm and is hiding out in the material plane. Her motivations are to balance the scales against the infernals and earn her place back with the celestials. The parties have all lent their aid towards her goals, but not all have succeeded in her favor. This keeps her stuck in a cycle of seemingly mundane random quests until the right tasks are completed successfully to meet her goals.

They show up and are talked about a decent amount in the Brimstone Angel book series. They are decribed very differently though because I think in 4e their appearance changed.
3:00 The Diterlizzi succubus/erinyes pics are awesome!
This just gave me an idea, if my party were to ever defeat one of my villains very easily, I could have a side plot/adventure where the party gets dragged down to hell to be witnesses as the villain sues his devil patron for not keeping up his end of the bargain.
Love your content, I always like hearing more about stuff from dnd so I can include cool parts of it!
My level 8 fighter looted an Erinyes chest plate to use as his own...it was a female looking Erinyes...and the armor depicted bare breasts

@@klove5974 That you would have censor the erinya if her image was on a video... like Rhexx made with that lava lady
Judging from the thumbnail I expect an Erinyes to gain control of my creature, untap it, and give it haste until end of turn.
Me: Erin no
Erin: Erinyes
Dude , you videos have kept me sane thru the lockdown i just want to say thank you from colombia
Dang! I was really hoping the Feywild would win the poll lol. Much love tho man looking forward to that Shadowfell vid!
Thanks for all the awesome videos it great to watch this during quarantine since I can't do anything during summer break. Also can you do a video on Lycanthropes?
Thanks! Now I know more about the mother of my Tiefling :D
probably, not a mother but a very good looking for her age granny, direct offsprings of fiend and mortal are called cambions and they are more powerful than normal mortals.
this helps me, i have problem with reading books and having this kinds of dnd videos it helps me alot :D
Ooooo I cannot wait to introduce a session involving these beauties! Muahahaha! I'm DMing the "Tyranny of Dragons" campaign. They would fit perfectly in a good scenario.
That thumbnail can only be described as an Act of Treason.
(Also love your videos.)
Thanks MrRhexx! you're the best my guy.
Their names where:
Αληκτώ (she who howls)
Μέγαιρα (the jealous one)
Τισιφόνη (she who punishes murder/ with murder)
I have no idea how they were twisted into fallen angels *of both genders* but, then again, they did also sh*t on nymphs by making them elementals of beauty and by having Dryads not be a subspecies of them.
MrRhexx

More seriously
MrRhexx you make a wonderful job at transmitting your passion for d&d lore, and all your videos are very interesting and inspiring (and useful to know how to play those monsters). I sadly can't support you on Patreon nor do I want to download a stupid mobile game, but I'm grateful for your work, thank you so much !
The Erinyes are probably my favorite lower planes creature. They have the cool fallen angel lore, the amazonian battle colony lifestyle, plus one of the truest forms of lawful. Way superior to succubus who don't even get your rocks off.

Only issue... avacyn IS an angel not fallen(unlike gisela and Bruna). She was specifically made to protect the humans of innastrad from the vampires. She doesn’t really fit the bill here.
Given that you've already covered the fallen angels now, why not cover the actual angels? The Deva, Planatar, and Solar?
Cuz they are boring
Yees
Imagine an anime with a ditzy erinyes making a contract with a estranged mortal and it turns out the mortal gains demonic power equivalent to arch dukes/dutchess without the mind bring totally corrupted and all sorts of shenanigans and epic battles in the nine realms happen.
I could listen to you for hours
I know this would be massive and take lots of time, but would you ever consider doing a video or series of videos about the entire overall history of the Forgotten Realms?
jorhpdan already did that
Glad i could help man, love your vids!
You just gave me an awesome idea for a Fiend Warlock of an Erinyes, great video!
I’d be really interested in a video on Kuo-Toa, they are very interesting with unique societies from what I’ve read
*Someone ends up in hell*
"I was lied to! I sold my souls and recieved nothing!"
"You didn't get anything? Can i see your contract?"

"Erin,yes."
Lmao
My Greek mythology says to keep your distance if you want to stay alive.
Where's my great bow? Gonna shove an arrow the size of a shovel in them.
Oh crap. Faustian pacts.
Yep.
Alright boys, load the great bows and get me my hammer.
great video as always. I joined the Raid as well!
Looking forward to watch thesee vids man! Thx a lot:)

Aren’t Erinyes supposed to be based the Erinyes (the Furies) from Greek mythology?
They aren't *suppose* to be based of them they ARE based of them, all the way to the lawyers bit ( yup the spirits of venguance were lawyers at some point)
@@meme0taker87 yes I know, but he was leaning way harder into the fallen Angel angle than the ancient vengeance goddess angle

Will there be a video about bahamut?
May take awhile, may be next, who knows
Yes.
He did dragon gods already
Dude that thumbnail is from probably my favorite MTG Card! Act of Treason
I want a story about a second generation Succubus and Erinyes working together to do good deeds to escape the punishment of the lower planes.
@@notrod5341 Well, he said that there are fallen angels that do not serve Asmodeus and those don't become Erinyes
@@Max_G4 Oh I stand corrected. Thank you.
I think there is one associated with the Daemons? (Neutral evil.) Specifically theres a fallen one that hates elves iirc.
Woooo Buddy I'm ready for this one.
I believe this may be my favorite and most intriguing monster in this game. I don’t know why, but there’s an ambiguity about them alongside the specificity of what they can do...I wish there were a bunch of more lore for them.
Thanks. My next campaign needed a law firm as the final boss.
