I live in Oregon the whitest state in America and while I was raised to love and respect everyone it doesn’t mean I know very much about black culture. It’s nice to see reviews for good movies from a culture other than mine.😊
I listened to space on X the filmmakers organized before the film came out and I became very skeptical when they said the writer of the film is a first time writer. With that though, I think he tried. He will definitely improve with time. However you are right, the story wasn't that great.
Firstly, this storyline isn’t a new one. There have been similar stories especially the fact that the child or parent of the lead actor had to be ill and in need of some money he can’t afford or raise. But this film (TK) has some glorious moments that kept it going. Like that transition of TK from the hospital to his meeting with Gaza. I shouted.😂 The car chase scene were amazing too and the car diving into the and its retrieval from the water was a show of masterpiece. Trust me, it ain’t easy at all. As for the fight sequence at the end… it wasn’t choreographed properly. Filming such an action/fight sequence is no beans though. But there were a few shots that are applauding. Like the crashing into rooms, the landing on the windshield and its breaking effect, the continuity etc. But, what happened to the goons of Gaza after Gaza was shot? They suddenly became irrelevant? The same men who were chanting at the top of their voices in solidarity with their boss. They saw their boss drop dead and did nothing about that? No reactions, no actions…nothing. How it is even possible to lose a gun from your pocket without realising it? Do you know how heavy a gun is? It was after I started handling prop guns on set that I realised how heavy real guns…even the smallest pistols are. Those stuffs are made of heavy metals. It’s very unlikely that someone would lose a gun in that manner and not feel it. Unless it’s a toy gun. Then when I got to the part where Ivie’s character was making that bathroom call…I laughed a very long laugh.😂 That was so amateurish. How can you be making such a sensitive call in a building that is crawling with police officers in a dark time at which the child of the CBN boss is being held hostage and every policeman is on alert? And you are making the call in a bathroom with the door open and you’re backing the opened door, divulging your secret involvement in the kidnapping and even yelling.😂 No one makes such mistake. If people make such mistakes, then we’d have caught all the robbers, kidnappers, ritualists, terrorist, etc, in Nigeria. Then next we saw was the police arresting the mastermind behind the operation. That was the most easiest and lamest police capture operation I have ever watched in a movie all my life. Arresting innocent street kids is even more complex than this.😂 No decoding, no brainstorming, no tactics. And the mastermind was just as accessible as a suya man on the street corner. So easy for the mastermind of the kidnap operation of the CBN governor’s child. Na only to mask him voice him sabi.😂😂😂 Overall, the film is great! Greater than many Nollywood films. For me, ORIGINALITY is the greatest score for a film. Because it’s actually the hardest score to pass. Technicalities are very important too but almost every good film can have that. Good picture, good sound, good lighting, good editing etc. But the creativity for me is number one.
The red flag for me was the lack of writing credits in the opening sequence. A lot of effort was put into making the film but they forgot to put that same effort in the script. Classic Nollywood.
Dope review Pearl. 🎬 I watched this review last night but forgot to leave a comment only to wake up this morning to see you left a comment on mine and that’s when I remembered that I didn’t leave a comment. Lol. I’m really glad you mentioned the thing about Tokunbo taking the kid to Seme border. It didn’t sit right with me when I watched it but I guess I let it slide because I felt like perhaps I missed something about it. Anyway, nice one. 👍🏽
- Amputee stub - pretty sure that was a real amputee because the actual hand cutting scene wasn't great. - Nigerian-ness - this is a thing I didn't give it credit for (but should have) because I think a lot of the film language was not (Thanks Ramsey) - Funlola did have a mic pack at her back 😩 - Stockholm syndrome might fit for Adunni. I just can't give that level of charitability to Ramsey - Voice distortion was really only for us. I think I know what he was trying to do. It was just poorly done. - The Music interlude was hilarious😂😂
Hayy god re: amputee "makeup". But you know what? I'd rather err on the side of over-complimenting, especially wen there's so much of the other side LOL. But I'm thinking about what you suggest and don't know how to feel about it. If someone is already an amputee and you make them enact their hand being chopped off… I honestly don't know how to feel. Like, isn't that traumatising? Ha! That mic pack btherrrrred me. But I didn't see it mentioned anywhere so I started to doubt myself. Inside that tight dress! Lmao @ stockhold syndrome. Remember when we were severely dragged for not giving Anikulapo series enough credit as per everything we disagreed with was pretty much easter eggs that we will see next season. I no wan fight. Agree on the voice distortion. I had a lengthier take on it but the video was too long. My music interlude… it was on rewatching that I realized it was funny. At the time it was just frustration. And that just happened to be what I was rocking to. Okayyyy! Thank you so much, iroko. 💛
I was going to watch it but after listening to this review i don't think i will, because it just sounds like yet another nollywood movie investing in everything except good writers
Omor...it's annoying. The one wey vex me pass is that first police check point. Just a car or two before Tokunbo's car is to be checked with Nike at the back, he swayed his car into the lone lane in which no car is plying and the police did nothing. Haaaaa
it's so sad that Nollywood has the ability to tell original stories and over and over the movies that comes out are just a waterdown versions of Hollywood movies that are executed poorly. I felt my intelligence being insulted a lot throughout the movie.
I stopped watching this at 11:36, maybe I'll come back to finish it later. In summary, if I would make a video review on "Tokunbo" like this, I'll be saying the opposite of everything you have said here so far at 11:36, at least on a scale of 95%.
Great review Pearl!! Very entertaining and true!!
Muchas gracias, mi hermano. (Once I really start speaking Spanish, una no go hear word).

Yeah… I didn't know that, and if I did it would make zero difference. It behooves on the filmmaker to maybe hire a story/script editor/doctor. Whew.

Absolutely. Our filmmakers need to actually do like they respect us small.
FACE CARD ❤❤
You win 😆
Conflicted about watching the movie after this review 😂
PS: Love the sundress ❤ Is it a smock (can't really see the bottom).
Haha.
No, not a smock

Anyway, nice one. 👍🏽
No wahala, my brother.
Also, you covered a lot of specific things that rankled. I enjoyed your review as well. I liked the list format too!

When I noticed the distorted voice goof, I was like I'll see if Pearl will mention this in her review 😁
You know me 😩
I was going to watch it but after listening to this review i don't think i will, because it just sounds like yet another nollywood movie investing in everything except good writers
It is.

See ehn, I decided to just not comment on that car chase at al before I get really mad.
Omor ehhnn😂😂😂😂😂@@pearlosibu
i was so angry for the ending, they fought in the rain and it stopped raining immediately Gaza was killed, was the rain a paid actor?
😂😂😂😂

Right. It’s disappointing

LOL. Considering that that is all the "what works" section, ha!! You wan banish the film to eternal damnation? Please come back and finish o.
