well if you want to get technical, i've been running emp/gli core since empoleon got buffed and the composition was inspired by the first team i ever made a video on a few months back which was emp/gli/serp. the grass coverage is a must since you're corebroken by something like a lanturn or whiscash otherwise, and since i recently got the cress, and cress has a fighting resistance that helps emp lead, i wanted to try it out haha.
First, it would be, hopefully you "gave" credit.. Secondly, there's no need to give credit anywhere because there's only so many Pokémon someone could choose from to do PVP battles in the first place. And out of those select few that are even worth a crap to try to win, it's very likely someone that you're up against is using a few of the same guys if not, using the same team. It's not unrealistic to see someone using the same teams or similar teams. No one owns any team of three Pokémon and it does not matter who all is using the team or where someone might have seen the team being used. And like he said, he had been using it for a while. I see a lot of people using the same Pokémon all the time. Ain't no one worried about who was first doing anything. That is some small trivial crap.
