  • Are you looking for garden inspiration? Then Peter and Monica Knutsson's garden in Oxelösund is a must-visit! The hilly villa plot has been transformed into a spectacular garden with many natural rooms, filled with an impressive variety of bulb plants, alpines, rock garden plants, perennials, shrubs, and trees.
One of the most impressive aspects of the garden is the large collection of evergreen plants, such as boxwood, holly, kalmia, pieris, and rhododendron. Along with several hundred dwarf conifers, these plants make the garden worth visiting all-year-round. It is truly a paradise for anyone interested in evergreen foliage and conifer plants.
The construction of this fantastic garden began back in the 1980s. Peter and Monica have experimented with various cultivation methods such as wet beds, raised peat beds, and growing in pure sand. Their goal has always been to create a garden with many rooms, and they have used stone and peat to build raised plantings for both woodland and rock gardens.
The garden is designed to offer peace and harmony. There are small grass areas along with sections and paths covered with gravel and stone, creating a tranquil atmosphere. A pond with a bubbling stream and water lilies adds further charm to the garden. Trees and shrubs create a green canopy over the garden, while shrubs like rhododendrons and magnolias, along with perennials, make up the garden floor.
Peter and Monica want their garden to be enjoyable even during winter. Therefore, they have invested heavily in evergreen plants. Recently, they have also invested in mini and dwarf conifers. With features such as bamboo fences, Japanese maples, and stone lanterns, the garden has an Asian touch that makes it unique.
Nothing has been left to chance in this garden. Since 1981, Peter and Monica have spent countless hours developing and improving their garden. From an empty plot with a few birches, they have created one of the most impressive gardens in Södermanland, Sweden. They have also drawn inspiration and plants from trips to Poland, the Czech Republic, Scotland, England, and Germany, and ordered plants from Japan.
In recent years, the warmer summers have been a challenge. To help the plants thrive, they have built wet beds that function as water reservoirs. These beds resemble ponds but are filled with sand and soil to retain moisture better.
