Absolutely the best b-side from Elton's catalog - this song is one of his greatest songs one the last 10 years, and should have been a #1 hit on it's own. Why he didn't include it on Peachtree is beyond me. Also, it seems to re-tell the Brokeback Mountain story - was it written as a theme for the movie? It just seems the lyrics match the story too well.
You say I can't understand The highway's hold on a troubled man You want me but you don't know how To quit the chase and settle down I don't know but I can tell You fill that saddle pretty well But God knows I need something too I've hung in all these years for you chorus: So go ahead and chase the wind And if someday you fold your wings I'll be the nest you never made If not, so sad the renegade So sad that you lost me When all you ever had to be Was balanced in the games you play You'll lose so sad the renegade You always had a cowboy heart A wild horse running through the dark A need to touch the jagged edge To wrap your heels upon the ledge Everyone who's close to you Reads your book and sees the clues Tries to set you straight on me The love you lose won't set you free (repeat chorus) It's only love that keeps me here Something in you I hold so dear I'm not out to change your ways All I want is the chance to say (repeat chorus) Go ahead and chase the wind And if someday you fold your wings I'll be the nest you never made If not, so sad the renegade
Hi, great collection of rarities. Thanks for posting. I did read once that they never went into the studio to record B sides...they just chose what they thought was the best of the best. I agree some great stuff got tossed aside.
I'm replying to my own comment. narcissistic? Anyway I'm digging into 2000s Elton. This song was like getting struck by lighting. His well worn but still powerful voice frame this song into something truly badass. King Melody reminds you he's still got it up his sleeve all the time.
This is insanely good! Elton HAS to do a double album of B-sides from the last 25 years. Global no.1 no risk !!!!

How in the hell did Elton toss this off??? This is easily his best song since his heyday, and easily a #1 hit.
He needs to re-issue it.
"The Greatest Melody Writer Ever In Popular Music"
I get never tired of listening to Elton when he
sings such kind of melody. Awesome.
Elton's new album The Union, with Leon Russell, is superb
This song is frickin' fantastic, no?!?!?!
Almost a revisitation of Tumbleweed Connection here...love it!
You say I can't understand
The highway's hold on a troubled man
You want me but you don't know how
To quit the chase and settle down
I don't know but I can tell
You fill that saddle pretty well
But God knows I need something too
I've hung in all these years for you
chorus:
So go ahead and chase the wind
And if someday you fold your wings
I'll be the nest you never made
If not, so sad the renegade
So sad that you lost me
When all you ever had to be
Was balanced in the games you play
You'll lose so sad the renegade
You always had a cowboy heart
A wild horse running through the dark
A need to touch the jagged edge
To wrap your heels upon the ledge
Everyone who's close to you
Reads your book and sees the clues
Tries to set you straight on me
The love you lose won't set you free
(repeat chorus)
It's only love that keeps me here
Something in you I hold so dear
I'm not out to change your ways
All I want is the chance to say
(repeat chorus)
Go ahead and chase the wind
And if someday you fold your wings
I'll be the nest you never made
If not, so sad the renegade
