Best Leica related multiple flash usage video I am aware of! I am not using flash in my style of photography often, so in case I need my flash with Leica M, I am using my old relatively small but powerful Metz 30BCT4 flash w/wo sync cable. Never tried if my Canon speedlite flashes would work on my M cameras with hotshoe, but they are too bulky on this smaller camera (I suspect they don't work since they are made for Canon hotshoe connections which might not be the same).

Testing using the Leica III G & the like , as walkaround but want a compact but good "A" auto thyristor for leisure walk around but decent manual power control. Swivel & tilt is A+. an older Metz version of the size of a Leica SF40 / 60.
I hear you. I use cheap Chinese compact flash for the on camera flash look (Godox now do a retro flash for the same vibe). Metz flash offer a lot of functionality for the cash.

Amazing! I didn't even realize the Nikon torch TTL pinout was same till I just looked. I remembered Leica had 4-pin but thought forth was on wrong side. So, will Nikon TTL talk to Leica or vise-versa? Can I use my Nikon SC-29TTL AF cable , even w/ Leica? More specifically, is Leica film TTL flash of the M6 TTL specific to film such as like Nikon? Nikon SB-800 / SB-910 / SB500 digital i-TLL flash still work in full A + TTL on 1980's 90's film but not the reverse. I'm wondering if a modern Leica SF-60 will still work on old M6 TTL in full auto & TTL. I do have an old SF-20 on it now.

I'd be very interested in the possible Leica M3/M2/coldshoe gang flash photography video. I even have the Leica CTOOM flash bracket with the original box. Just no flash yet.
just for clarification - the Godox X1t (Nikon) does NOT work on the Leica SL2. The pins are incompatible with the SL2 and will lock up the camera forcing a reset. However the Godox XT16 seems to work just fine. The XT16 has only the center pin - the X1t has three more pins in addition to the center pin. The XT16 is FAR more convenient anyway.
Hi Steve, thanks for that. I think I got my SL after the XT1 triggers so I never tested them together but they were never a good fit for Leica. Far too big and blocking the controls on M cameras. Sorry to hear that you had problems. Yes I only use Xt16 triggers as they are a nice fit for all Leica bodies. (or the FT16 triggers if using older lights).
Matt, I have an M4 (sold shoe with PC sync port) and 2 Godox 350s and it is really hard to find a PC flash sync cable to connect at the other end to any of my flashes. Any ideas? Thanks, as always, a good video.

@@philippehatsadourian6679 I’ve not used but other do. If you work at fixed distance in street then manual flash should be easy, you only need to do a few rest shots then keep settings constant after, or power up/down based on distance to subject.
I purchased the Nikon version of the Godox xt-32. It works with my Leica m9. Triggered flashpoint lithium-ion R2 flash. The only thing is the last two pins of the trigger don’t slide onto the hotshoe. I have to press them with my finger and then it slides on to the hotshoe. Minor issue. No HSS on my M9. It does not fire the flash once I go beyond the flash sync speed marker on the shutter dial.
Hi Matt, I'm wondering if you've figured out a solution for HSS flash (for outdoor flash) with Leica? From what I can tell from reading forums, it seems you can only get this with either Leica native flashes, or a Priolite system (since they make a Leica specific trigger for their HSS units). Wondering if you ever figured out a solution with your godox lights to go above the sync speed.
thanks for this comprehensive review of flash with Leica. Can you make a video to show how you find the right exposure with the M6 and the AD200 ? so far I use only the SF20 with my M6ttl because with ttl I don't have to worry about the exposure.
Thanks, for manual flash work you can meter with handheld Sekonic or cheat and test with a digital camera first. I tend to do the latter for speed as I use digital for clients anyway.
Can I assume that even though using the Nikon Godox triggers and lights that the units only work in manual and not TTL with the Leica cameras. I have Canon Godox lights and transmitters and I can use with my Leicas but only in manual
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Hi May not sure if you have seen this yet but just purchased a Godox Lux Junior retro flash for my Q2. Amazing little flash and appears on the auto function to establish a sort of TTL It also works optically with Godox triggers and other speed lights. Maybe with your new found love of ‘auto’ lenses be a workaround for your Q
Hey Giorgio, you can't do HSS with Leica M240 i'm afraid, you can use the 1/180 max and use the triggers shared in the MrLeica.com review link below the video.
With your extensive knowledge do you know if: a) The Leica SF C1 can trigger the Godox AD200Pro and a Leica SF 60? b) The Godox Xpro-S or Xpro-N can trigger the Godox AD200Pro and a Leica SF 60?
Hi John, sorry for my late answer. I've had to learn on the job with a lot of my Godox gear so i'm not aware of every combination. My expectation would be that the Leica flash can't trigger Godox lights via wireless but like any flash you can set slave units (any flash not on camera to S1 mode / sync and then when the unit sees a light flash it will also flash. Great except during events as anyone with their own camera sets off you lights with that little camera flash. I'll not sure on the Xpro-S/N but they should fire the newer Godox units and probably wont fire Leica units (pretty certain)
May I make a suggestion to improve your setup? Look into the “Flashpoint R2 single-pin transceiver” sold by Adorama. (No, I don't have any affiliation with them.) This controller uses Godox protocols but was NOT made by Godox; Adorama had it manufactured to its own design. Its big advantage for rangefinder-camera users is that it's fully compatible with current Godox flashes (same as your X1 transmitter) but the body is much more narrow, so it shouldn't block access to your shutter speed dial - at least it doesn't on my Canon P, so I assume it won't on your M either. The R2 has a hot shoe on top, so you can still use the trick of putting a cheap manual flash in it to remotely fire your AD200… but you don't have to, because it will fire the AD200 by radio all by itself, and give you the ability to adjust its power remotely as well. You can do the same with your TT350 units by setting them to receive mode. The R2 is a “single pin” controller - it has only the center hot-shoe pin for firing the flash, none for other camera functions, so it can't use the fancier Godox functions such as TTL exposure or high speed synch - but of course these aren't available on your M anyway, and it sounds as if you're not trying to use them on your CL either. The other good thing about the R2 controller is the price: US$ 25 singly or $50 for a two-pack.
Thanks for all the info. They sound like the triggers around but I switched to Godox. Design sounds the same, narrow, 2x AAA battery with hotshoe BUT work with Godox which is great. I will check, many thanks!
Hi Matt. Thanks for the video. Useful content as always. You mentioned “Nikon” a few times when clarifying compatible flash units. Does this suggest that Nikon units generally, are ok to use with M cameras. I ask because I have a SB910 and a couple of “Nikon” Pocket Wizzards. Don’t use flash much, but it would be good to know I can use these on my M10R without frying anything. I ask because the Leica user guide says...”The use of incompatible flash units with your Leica M10-R may result in irreparable damage to the camera and/or the flash unit.” Its a recent purchase and I haven’t got past the stage yet where my M10R is slightly more precious to me than my children. Unfortunately, Leica don’t make it clear which “incompatible” flash units it is referring to.
Hey Mark, I can’t avoid to buy you a new M10R so I would use it off camera and use triggers. It’s too big on camera anyway. I’ve used quite a few Leica with triggers and no issues.
Hi Frank, I bought another recently new so I think yes. If not can get new on eBay. They are now old so I might buy one more while that design is available. Also yes the triggers might be generic fit (some)(x1 isn’t)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Hi Matt. Have you looked at the Godox xt32 Nikon mount flash trigger? I also have the X1* flash triggers for Fuji and Olympus, but they do not fit the Leica hot shoe. Thank you for letting me know that the Nikon version flash trigger fits Leica cameras.

I am having all sorts of problems trying to figure out how to run a flash studio strobe off my Leica Dlux 7. Would the Godox remote trigger(N) only work with the godox speedlights or can it be used with standard strobes to trigger them? I dont really want to rely on using the tiny flash on camera to trigger photo cell sensors on the strobes as this might not always work (example if I have one strobe set behind a model for backlighting). Please help :'(
Godox triggers fire Godox lights so have the trigger + 1 godox flash then set the strobes to sync with the flash firing and all will flash from the 1 Godox flashing. Yes the lights need to see the flash to work. Another option is buy Godox X1R receivers and connect those those to the studio strobes. Then they can work without "seeing" the flash firing.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thank you for your response. After writing you I began to play around with the Godox TT600 flash and the Godox X2T Trigger on the Leica CL. I found out that the trigger will get a flash only with the "Scene" mode set in the Leica CL. Interesting! I have not tried all of the Scenes but when set to Auto Scene and using an 18mm Elmarit, the camera controls the focus, aperture, shutter speed and ISO and I can control the compensation.....all as expected. When I use a manual lens like a Voigtlander 40mm, I can control the compensation which in turn controls the shutter along with the Auto ISO and I can also control the aperture. Obviously, I can in both scenarios, control the light with the flash and with the process of trial and error, I can get excellent pictures. Next I will try all the different Scene modes to check for any differences.
Hmmm I come for your info. I am fine with blank background or with stuff in background. I trust you’ll choose the bg that best conveys your message and info. As for audio...no discernible difference in end result but there would be a benefit to you in terms of you ability to have more flexibility. Rock on!!
Take a look at the “Flashpoint R2 single pin transceiver” from Adorama that I noted in my long reply above. It fires and provides manual power control on all modern Godox flashes, from the TT350 to the AD1200… but it's designed with a narrow body that doesn't block most shutter speed dials the way the X1 triggers do. I don't have any affiliation with Adorama and am not getting anything from them for “plugging” this item - I only mention it because I was happy to find a Godox-compatible trigger that fits well on my vintage cameras (Canon P, VI-T, and 7s) and my Fuji X-Pro 2.
Hi, yes the M2, M3, M4 have the cold shoes so are less suited to flash but it is possible. I will try to find the flash gear I bought for my M3 and make some new sample photos ahead of a future video.

Hi Andy, I used TT350 and AD200 with SL and CL yes. Work on all Leica.
Hi Matt, Thank you so much!!
Hi! Nikon flash should all work but non with TTL (from my experience). I shoot manually only so it’s no issue.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom oh I tested it. My Metz 40 Mz 3 w/ 351 Leica foot TTL off an M6 TTL doesn't work on my Nikon and I'm sure its film only TTL

I'd be very interested in the possible Leica M3/M2/coldshoe gang flash photography video. I even have the Leica CTOOM flash bracket with the original box. Just no flash yet.
Thanks Jesse! Yes that video is on the list, will do :)
just for clarification - the Godox X1t (Nikon) does NOT work on the Leica SL2.

Thank you Frank. I’ve seen these on Amazon so thanks for confirming that they work on the M9. Nice setup you have!
That was just one sugar you put in that coffee. Good man!
Haha actually just milk! Being English and all :P
Hi Peter, no sadly the M cameras don't work with HSS. I use ND filters on f1 lenses with flash.
thanks for this comprehensive review of flash with Leica.

Hey Giorgio, you can't do HSS with Leica M240 i'm afraid, you can use the 1/180 max and use the triggers shared in the MrLeica.com review link below the video.
With your extensive knowledge do you know if:
a) The Leica SF C1 can trigger the Godox AD200Pro and a Leica SF 60?
b) The Godox Xpro-S or Xpro-N can trigger the Godox AD200Pro and a Leica SF 60?
Hi John, sorry for my late answer. I've had to learn on the job with a lot of my Godox gear so i'm not aware of every combination. My expectation would be that the Leica flash can't trigger Godox lights via wireless but like any flash you can set slave units (any flash not on camera to S1 mode / sync and then when the unit sees a light flash it will also flash. Great except during events as anyone with their own camera sets off you lights with that little camera flash. I'll not sure on the Xpro-S/N but they should fire the newer Godox units and probably wont fire Leica units (pretty certain)

@@johnjury7316 no problem, yes I love Godox stuff too 👍🏻

Digital SL yes, Leicaflex SL like I just got, no
May I make a suggestion to improve your setup?
Is the xt16 still available as new from godox? Also, on Amazon they don’t mention what camera it fits.
It also appears to be more vertical shaped like the xt16 so that it does not interfere with the Leica shutter speed dials.
