I dyed my hair red last month, and used these tips for maintaining in between. All my friends thought it was too intense, but IT WORKS SOOOOO GOOD! THANKS LUNA!
This has saved my red hair! Thank you! And as for the L'oreal Hicolor, the results were Wonderful. My natural hair color was jet black. My hair truly came out as an intense red, with no bleaching. I left it on for 35-45 minutes. My developer was 30.
Yes you do, I used a 40 vol with it and it came out perfect the first time (coming from hair that was dark auburn, but has been dyed MANY times, including black more than once.) That hair dye is amazing. I swear by it. ...For me. don't hold me to that if it goes wrong haha.
I have extremely oily hair (well, since I bleached it, one year ago, it is a little less oily), so I must wash it every two days, otherwise it will look really really gross. I can't find dry shampoo so I actually use talc powder (I know it seems weird and/or damaging but it works really well for me) and it makes my hair look less oily and prettier on the second day after washing it, but only on the second day :( However, I can still maintain my bright red hair for a long long time because I also mix my hair dye with the conditioner about 2/3 times a week. It is a really good trick :)
If only you had come out with this a month ago!!! I've killed my hair "hi-lifting" all of it whenever I redid my firetruck red color, so I chopped it off and went brown. Using a non-lifting dye on the bottom half of your hair is genius. GENIUS! I say
I haven't had internet for so long, and just spent twenty minutes trying to remember your name and find your channel. It's so wonderful hearing your voice again. I'm a fan ^_^
I do the exact same things when it comes to washing my hair. It seems to be working pretty well - it's been around 6 weeks since I last dyed it and its still a pretty vibrant red
Hey Loon! I definitely agree with what you said about LOreal majicontrast/majirouge. When I was modelling, I had my hair dyed red with LOreal (I didn't pay for it) and it was boldly undertoned with orange. Nothing else is as awesome as LOreal if you want the orange-reds and coppers. When I stopped modelling I used other cheaper brands, but none of them compared to LOreal :'(
The best thing I've found for red hair is Revlon's nutri color creme, it's like a deep conditioner with dye in it. I don't use any other products and my hair always looks shiny and healthy :)
I use the Loreal HiColor to get my red hair and it's pretty awesome, I love it. I'm just working on getting a good maintenance routine down now. I love your color so much! It's pretty much what I'm aiming for.
Hi color works great. Super vibrant. I used it for awhile before I dyed it back, now I'm going red again but a deep Cherry red instead of the bright I had
As a girl who has had bright red hair (with cherry pink undertones) for almost year...I highly agree with taking her advice about the dedication you will have to give to your hair to keep it looking fresh!!! SECOND I HIGHLY ADVISE USING A RED PROTIN FILTER RIGHT BEFORE DYING , IT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE ON THE VIBRANCY OF THE COLOR :)
You explain everything so perfectly. I've been trying to go back to my intense red hair and failed twice. Your advices are my new guide. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!
Wow well I sure admire you for doing all this to maintain your hair! It obviously pays off because your hair always looks AMAZING and healthy! This was very helpful, too
First time watching your videos and I LOVE your personality :D so much energy. I went red in October (but a way darker red than you've got) and love it :) I actually wash my hair about 3-4 (depending on what I've been doing and so on as I go down the gym as well) a week. Have only re-dyed it about 4 times if that. I'm guessing that the IMMENSE hair-care that you do is because your colour is so vibrant? Mine does ok with using colour care shampoo and conditioner :)
tnx, you really helped me..I m 20 and still got virgin hair so it's kind a big step 4 me...so exated..I googled it all and buy all your products from ebay 'case there's no any in Croatia
lol loved the dandruff comment! lol... I live in US and use the L'oreal line for my red hair. I use the Red Hot for dark hair and then i like to give it dimmension with the hi lift highlights for dark hair... it takes out the bleaching since i am hispanic and have super dark brown hair... absolutely love the results ! had red hair since march 2012. It is very expensive but looks gorgeous!
your hair will surely be blotchy. You can go to a salon to get your hair an even color (if your salon isn't as expensive as where I live :p ). You can even out your hair by yourself aswell. Pick a neutral shade of medium to dark brown in box dye. You will propably need several coloring sessions to get your hair even, but that depends on how well your hair takes new colors. From there on you can put red back on it
omg.... you were amazing !! than-you so much. ive recently dyed my hair a vibrant red after being a blonde for so long ( im 35 mind you lol) and ive done research after research before i even attempted at going red.... watching your video has given me tips on products that i should be using and will now start to use !!...... thank-you!!
This is a great video! I've been keeping my hair red for a while and while it seems like a lot of work, it does become second nature after a while. Good to know I've maintaining it right! It's hard to find those dyes in America, so I use Loreal HiColor and it works about the same and is affordable. I solved the dandruff issue with Redken (for men) Chill Blast anti-dandruff treatment. It's a leave-in spray that goes directly on the scalp so it doesn't strip the color and it's worked like a charm.
Thanks for posting this video, I had red hair and I don't think people understood just how much work you have to put into the maintenance of it! Unfortunately the maintenance was too much for me and I've let it fade. Thanks again!
Awesome tips Louna! I've started using color-depositing shampoo every so often, it makes a world of difference! Thanks for all the tips, hope you're having an awesome day!
Yellow/Orange based Red is really hard to find here in our area so what I do is I mix a little of yellow or orange dye so it would counter act the pink, and it works fine 😁
i dyed the bottom half of my hair red with splat and it works pretty well ^_^ i condition it every day and shampoo it twice a week. the awesome color lasts 2 weeks then it fades...but thats with taking a shower every day in warm water sooo pretty good product
Omg you're so pretty! I recently dyed my hair a dark, crimson red. :) My parents hate it, but honestly, I think that anything can be beautiful, no matter if its natural or not so long as you do it the right way. ^_^
@offwithurhead honestly just use whatever hair routine you have and buy manic panic and mix with conditioner and shampoo and just use that to keep hair looking bright. its not that expensive
The best answer I can give you is to go to a beauty salon and talk to a professional. That is the best way to go... I always see a professional for my hair care and it's worth every cent. Good luck!
I like to wash my hair once every 2 weeks, because thats usually when my hair is dirty and smelly. So I think that's helped my red out a lot too, but anyways, GURL YA ROCK! Love ya hair you look amazing!
n'rage works really well if you put a bag over your head and blow dry it after you've put it in. let it sit for about an hour and then blow dry it again. it should work. i did a plum purple and it stayed purple for 3 weeks and then slowly faded to blue. i left it for 8 weeks and at the end of those 8 weeks it was light blue with some lavender pieces!

I gotta say, this is SO useful, totally love you for this vid. Thanks
Even without color treated hair I could never wash my hair more than twice a week. I'd be a dry headed hay hair mess. I had red hair, got a bug up my bum and went purple and now I'm going back to red. I agree about Special Effects lasting WAY longer than Manic Panic. Your hair is absolutely gorgeous.
I too have bright red hair and totally agree with everything you have said. I live in the U.S. and use the L'Oreal HiLift red and achieve fantastic results. I have also started using argan oil based shampoo (sulfate and paraben free) as well as a deep moisturizing hair mask. These two products have literally saved my hair. Check it out if you can. Thanks for the video from one red head to another. Hee hee. Much love from the states!
I use Loreal Red HiColor highlights and it stays in longer than expected. The cool thing is my ends will fade into a yellow ~idky it was a dark brown color before~ but it looks super cool. Looks like fire. :D
Hi, Hannah. I'am a hairstylist and it is perfectly fine to color your hair red again. Re-coloring hair is not as harmful as lightening the hair to get to the color you want, the first time. Just color your hair as you did the first time, and take care of it better, as stated in the video. One thing she did not mention was to use heat protectant every time you style your hair with hot tools. I spray my heat protectant in wet hair then when its dry before I style it. I hope I helped! xoxo Taryn
i had that experience when i had purple hair. i think it may be the brand of dye you are using that may not be that great or it could also be that your shampoo is stripping away the color causing it to bleed out. i recommend washing your hair separate from your body in icy cold water with a Sulfur-Free shampoo such as Burt's Bees.
Also, depending on your hair type, it may wash out quicker or slower. I lose color in my hair after about 2 1/2 months if I wash it every other day (M W F Sun, T Th Sat alternating) if I am extremely strict with it (leaving in my conditioner under a shower cap for 20 minutes each wash, covering my hair in direct sunlight). It goes orange quickly after that 2 1/2 months is over. I dye my hair every 3 months (leaving 15 days of orange hair at the end before a redye).
Super helpful! I'm always having issues when i dye my hair bright red but this video is amazing and you have gorgeous red hair! I'm inlove with it! Plus your so pretty 😍 thank so much for making this video!!! 💓
My sister used to work for De Lorenzo and, when I had red hair, she'd always tell me to use the Fire Red shampoo as a colour depositing treatment as well. Not sure if you do that but she recommends it.
I tried majicontrast only and Im glad of it - before I had some CHI color from a saloon, but majicontrast is brighter and its budget-friendly(CHI is way more expensive) and majicontrast lasts way longer - anyway for conditioner tip colors here in Bulgaria we have some alternative of Manic Panic called LaRiche Directions - I don't know whats the diference I see they are same gel based - I wish we had Special Effects I can find it only in ebay or amazon - for now Im going to try Directions as its the only alternative here
i'm so glad this was randomly on the side of my homepage. haha. i use an auburn shade (garnier 535) BUT my natural hair color is a dark golden blonde so it picks up more natural dark red than brown. i love the idea of mixing manic panic or something in with my conditioner to keep it red longer!
I've been a red/orange head for 4 years and my routine is pretty much the same as yours :] I also love hot showers so I wash my hair in the bath with one of those removable shower head thingys. And I use La Riche Directions because I find it lasts way longer than Fudge or Manic Panic and you can get two 80ml tubs from eBay for about $15.
I just tried the Goldwell Elumen. It's more of a pinkish red, but it's peroxide free and permanent. I've washed my hair two or three times and it hasn't faded despite the brilliant pink color in the shower xD Perhaps you could try it. It also helped restore my very damaged hair. So far so good!
There are no words to describe how much I love you for all this help! xD I've never really had any clue as to how to keep up with my red hair so I always redyed it brown. Now I'm red again and I plan on staying that way. c:
Very nice vid as always. Nowadays there are even shampoos that protect the haircolor work well against dandruff. I agree, head&shoulders is crap, I'd highly recommend the new Nivea series. And if you want to pamper your hair, you should have an overnight repair every now and then. Put it into your hair, sleep on it and rinse it the next day-it'll look fine! Try Philip B Katria Hair mask for example, after you've used it a couple of times you need to wash your hair only once in 3 weeks. :)
Tresemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Hair Spray. Use a medium amount of it (not soggy or too little). I have a friend who has super curly, frizzy, poofy hair & I had to straighten it. It didn't damage her color or hair. That said, getting your hair colored (your whole head) can take the frizziness down a little on curly-haired girls. Use the spray, iron it, & then use a medium hold hair spray. This stuff is also color safe (it didn't pull my color either).
I have the same problem. I am naturally blonde and want red hair...and right now I actually have it died red. It does fade reallyyyyyyyyy fast. Like she mentioned in the video, I barely wash my hair and if I do I make the water freezing. If you have it warm, you can literally see the die running out of my hair. I went with the box dye instead of salon dye because you are going to have to dye your hair a lot and this way the home dye is much cheaper. To me its worth it because I love my red hair!
Make sure the shampoo is sulfrate free. Sulfrates drain color. And also just because you wash your hair once to twice a week, you can still wash your body everyday, and cover your hair hair with a shower cap or something. I dye my hair crazy colors a lot, I can answer any other questions you guys may have. But she's pretty much on point. :)
You'd be surprised how much volume the dry shampoo can give your hair. I know I have mostly the same hair routine as Luna and the dry shampoo works wonders!!
I am a redhead myself & I use dry shampoo's, I've tried a few but my favorite so far is Suave's dry shampoo it is WAYY better than TREsemme, & I think cheaper, you should def try it :)
Hey :D I absolutely LOVE your videos and your hair. It is perfect and looks so healthy!! I had recently become a redhead (a mix between a red violet and an intense red tone because I love the pink-red shades this colour gives to my hair) and this was the video I've been looking for so long :) Thank you for your advice, I may have more questions about red hair soon, I'm going to try some of the products you've shown so I can tell you :D Thank you!!
When my hair was red, i eventually wanted to change that and my hair just would not budge, the red was there to stay! Even with head & shoulders, if you wanna keep your red hair, use majicontrast then put a semi permanent dye on top afterwards, then it'll stay, simple as :3
I use loquay red ( I'm in mexico, i don't know it it's available somewwhere else) to re dyed my hair, and like you, use the majicolor in the roots. But like after two months or something, I use the majicolor again in all my hair. So far it's not too damaged... Should I use the majicolor on the roots strictly???
thanks for this vid. i have red hair now and it's incredible! btw you can now tell people you have claims of the loreal hicolor being awesome! i used it on my black hair and now it's your color. (:
Omg I have the holy grail that will keep your red hair maintained for longer. It's called Watercolours shampoo, you can get it in different shades like fire red or crimson red (the one I use) and honestly I don't know what I'd do without it. It deposits colour back into the hair which helps to maintain it. My red hair has lasted 5 or 6 maybe 7 weeks between colouring it again. Beware though when using it it makes your bathtub or shower look like there's been a murder scene, but you can easily clean it off. Here's the link to it: www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00MYPWBU6/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Chantelle Adlington Unfortunately, that link is no longer available. But I will Google it, though. I'd really like to limit the amount of products that I need to use to help maintain my red colour. I cannot believe how many different types of products this nice lady is putting into her hair. And I definitely don't have a massive budget to buy all of those products, either.
Thanks :) my hair's a pain and fades really, really quickly >.> My hair is pretty oily so I wash it about three times a week, I should probably stop washing it so much. You're really pretty btw :)
The HiColor excellence (highlights or not) by L'Oreal here in the states actually is specifically designed for people with darker hair. It's less damaging because there is no need to pre-bleach your hair before you use it. :)
I wanna thank you for this video I have been attempting to get my hair red from dyed black for months now it is a dark maroon now but this was very helpful in getting and maintaining the red I want I am gonna take the next week to get all the products together and then try it all. yay!!!!!!! Thanks
@TheJody999 The peroxide is what activates the permanent dye so you can colour your hair with it. It also lightens hair too. Seeing as your hair is now a reddish brown I'd suggest using 20vol developer next time you permanently dye your hair. This will lighten it enough so the colour is nice and vibrant :D
I love swimming in pools but since i dyed my hair bright red i bought a swimming cap and hated it because I like the way hair looks underwater. What i did was get a really nice swimming cap with flowers on it so now i can swim with red hair! xxx
I don't like a lot of unnatural dyes so I mainly stick to hair colour plus then mix whatever I have left with my non-streaking shampoo, lasts for about 2 months on me.
"Having red hair is like having a child. You need to look after it, otherwise it will die" 😂😂😂 OMG I love it
I dyed my hair red last month, and used these tips for maintaining in between. All my friends thought it was too intense, but IT WORKS SOOOOO GOOD! THANKS LUNA!

I've gone red two weeks ago, and I'm litterally taking notes while watching.
Thanks a lot (:
I never thought of mixing a semi permanent colour with my conditioner. Thanks for the tip Louna :) It's brilliant
Yes you do, I used a 40 vol with it and it came out perfect the first time (coming from hair that was dark auburn, but has been dyed MANY times, including black more than once.) That hair dye is amazing. I swear by it. ...For me. don't hold me to that if it goes wrong haha.

This made my day Kayla
I do the exact same things when it comes to washing my hair. It seems to be working pretty well - it's been around 6 weeks since I last dyed it and its still a pretty vibrant red
Try using a protein filler before dying it red, helps even out the color. Don't use too much though cause protein tends to dry out hair in excess!
Hahahaha "Dandruff or red hair". Ugh I have that problem right now. 😂
I have red hair too and just found your channel, it's soooo useful, thank you so much for taking the time to make videos, keep it going!

I'm so excited to be dying my hair red again. The last time I had red hair I followed your advice and my hair barely faded. (:
John Freda red hair shampoo is amazing for bright red, it'll let me go a few weeks to a month with good colour.
Loreal highcolor is awesome. The have red and magenta. I preffer the red because its more orange just like you lol
tnx, you really helped me..I m 20 and still got virgin hair so it's kind a big step 4 me...so exated..I googled it all and buy all your products from ebay 'case there's no any in Croatia

Yellow/Orange based Red is really hard to find here in our area so what I do is I mix a little of yellow or orange dye so it would counter act the pink, and it works fine 😁
Thank you! I loved my red hair and did most of that it still faded in like 3 days I just needed to know the good products and conditioner trick XD
Davines red color depositing conditioner is worth buying. It isn't cheap but is worth it because it delays having to refresh forever.
Sprinkling baby powder onto your hair brush and brushing it on to your roots also takes away greasiness. Helps me a ton in between washes!
i dyed the bottom half of my hair red with splat and it works pretty well ^_^ i condition it every day and shampoo it twice a week. the awesome color lasts 2 weeks then it fades...but thats with taking a shower every day in warm water sooo pretty good product
Omg you're so pretty! I recently dyed my hair a dark, crimson red. :) My parents hate it, but honestly, I think that anything can be beautiful, no matter if its natural or not so long as you do it the right way. ^_^
I am surprised you didnt mention jeans color,I am gonna mix it with the conditioner I think t'll work
that whole bar thing is sooo creative.
@offwithurhead honestly just use whatever hair routine you have and buy manic panic and mix with conditioner and shampoo and just use that to keep hair looking bright. its not that expensive

You video has to be the most helpful video i have ever watched on my UA-cam years! , BRAVO ♥

not foolproof but helpful. Coat your hair in regular conditioner before entering the pool, and put on a swimcap^_^ it helps

Redken's "Anti-Snap" works like magic on keeping damaged hair from breaking off. I had red hair for about a year and it kept my ends pretty healthy.

Loreal Hi-Color works AMAZING with 40 developer. In Red Hot or Magenta (believe it or not it comes out red) it's like a flame. I love it
is there any no poo product that i can use to mantain red hair?
u r my hero!?
i showed this video to my mom and she finally gave in to lettign me dye my hair red :DDDDDDD
thank u! ^^
You are super gorgeous!!! That red hair on you works!!!
"its all about caring for your color"
idk why but that made me laugh a lot lol
I've been a red/orange head for 4 years and my routine is pretty much the same as yours :]
I also love hot showers so I wash my hair in the bath with one of those removable shower head thingys.
I love your videos, I get so excited when I see a new one. I have bright red hair also, and your video's helped me soooooo much!! thank you!!!
I just dyed my hair with l'oreal hicolor. and i love it so much! it is seriously red and seriously bright (i got it in RED, not magenta!)
makeup tutorial for this look? It makes your hair look extra amazing
I wash my red hair once a week. It is long and super healthy even being dyed. Thank goodness for dry shampoo
I live in the US and use splat dye. It doesn't fade that fast at all. I redye it about once a month.
You'd be surprised how much volume the dry shampoo can give your hair. I know I have mostly the same hair routine as Luna and the dry shampoo works wonders!!
This video is a throwback for me
I am a redhead myself & I use dry shampoo's,
I've tried a few but my favorite so far is Suave's dry shampoo it is WAYY better than TREsemme, & I think cheaper, you should def try it :)
Hey :D I absolutely LOVE your videos and your hair. It is perfect and looks so healthy!! I had recently become a redhead (a mix between a red violet and an intense red tone because I love the pink-red shades this colour gives to my hair) and this was the video I've been looking for so long :) Thank you for your advice, I may have more questions about red hair soon, I'm going to try some of the products you've shown so I can tell you :D
Thank you!!
I love your cheerful personality :) I enjoy watching your videos. And your tutorials are really good. You're a sweetheart.
Here's the link to it:
www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00MYPWBU6/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Chantelle Adlington
Unfortunately, that link is no longer available.
It's not less damaging because you don't prelighten. It's less damaging because it only lifts your hair to an orange before dying red.
This will lighten it enough so the colour is nice and vibrant :D
there is a color you can get from sallys its called " L'oreal Hicolor Hilights in Red "
when i dyed mine pink it was so hard to get that magicontrast out! my base ended up soo orange after washing out as much as possible ahah xxx
I had NEVER thought of the conditioner tip. Does that really work?! It's SUCH a good idea if it does!
I love swimming in pools but since i dyed my hair bright red i bought a swimming cap and hated it because I like the way hair looks underwater. What i did was get a really nice swimming cap with flowers on it so now i can swim with red hair! xxx
I don't like a lot of unnatural dyes so I mainly stick to hair colour plus then mix whatever I have left with my non-streaking shampoo, lasts for about 2 months on me.
you are the only english-speaker youtuber i understand :D
i looooove your videos
