  • Calico is an old West mining town that has been around since 1881 during the largest silver strike in California. With its 500 mines, Calico produced over $20 million in silver ore over a 12-year span. When silver lost its value in the mid-1890's, Calico lost its population. The miner's packed up, loaded their mules and moved away abandoning the town that once gave them a good living. It became a "ghost town."
Walter Knott purchased Calico in the 1950's architecturally restoring all but the five original buildings to look as they did in the 1880's. Calico received State Historical Landmark 782 and in 2005 was proclaimed by then Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to be California's Silver Rush Ghost Town.
Today Calico is part of the San Bernardino County Regional Parks system visited by people from around the country and all over the world. The park offers visitors an opportunity to share in its rich history and enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding desert environment. Along with its history and attractions, Calico Ghost Town has shops, restaurants and offers camping and outdoor recreation not available at most of our other park facilities. Due to the historic nature of the town, not all areas are ADA accessible.
CAUTION: Mines in the Calico area are extremely hazardous and must not be approached for any reason!

My parents used to take me camping at Calico, all the time when I was a kid. Nowadays I take my kids there about 3 times a year. Just to camp, hike, explore all of the old silver mines, the ones that hav ent been closed off. It really sucks about the fact that several years ago the old cemetery was vandalized and several of the old grave markers were stolen. All of those 100+ year old wooden crossed and such. Gone. Why can't people just leave stuff alone?!?!

@@ladycharsw calico ghost town is a historic theme park built from the ruins of the original calico ghost town, it’s ran and operated by knots berry farm and to my knowledge no staff members or caretakers live on the property.

My parents were from Manitoba and Mom born in SK. She lives down there near Victorville and loves it. I visit a couple times a year. Went to Calico at least once a year as a child during the late 60’s and 70’s when Walter Knott still owned it. Had lots of snow there once in the early 80’s. Still a fun place to go. But not in summer, too hot!

When I was assigned to Edwards AFB in the early 1950's, my airmen friends and me visited Calico. It appears to be more commercialized now. I have some slides of Calico somewhere that I took when I visited.

When I was a boy back in 1959 we visited Calico. It seems like we went somewhere around April or May though it could have been June, July or August. It was very hot there. If you want to go when it isn't hot go in winter and bring you coat. Winters are cold, usually snowless but there is apt to be snow a few days in December or January. Elevation is about three thousand feet give or take a thousand. Calico was heavily and advertised on Los Angeles television during the middle and late 1950's.

In 1976 I drove out here in my 1966 Chevrolet Impala. I had a bottle of vodka with me and proceeded to get drunk. I slept in one of the cabins, they were not as tore up as they are now. About sun up a sheriff came rolling in, leaving a dust trail behind him. He hollered at me and told me i was trespassing, and if I didn't get out he would throw me in jail. I went to grab my stuff, and said I was taking to long, and kicked me in the ass. I gathered up my stuff and ran to my car but it wouldn't start. I ran the battery down trying to start it. That pissed off the sheriff even more. He then pulled out his gun and said that I better hoof it and now. I took off running like a bat out of hell. I ran as far as I could out of his site, but I look over a crest and see him destroying my car. He first took a bat and smashed my windshield, then he knocked the tail lights out, then the headlights. He then went to the trunk of his car and got a big hammer, raised the hood of my car and started smashing everything under the hood. Next he took out his revolver and shot all four of my tires out, then jumped in his patrol car spun out in the dirt slinging dirt all over my car. He left after that but I didn't want to go near the place again I ended up hitchhiking in to Barstow California, where I'm from. A couple of weeks later I had a buddy drive me back out there, and we looked at the damage. He smashed the carburetor completely flat, destroyed the manifold, pounded holes in the valve covers, and cracked the battery. My friend said the car wasn't worth saving so we left it. I loved that Impala. Hopefully that crazy fat ass sheriff is dead by now. I still will never go back to those cabins, after that bad experience.

I'm gonna search the outer hills some then go into Doran Road where there's lots of rocks . If there's good specimens in that near area , I SHALL FIND THEM ! ONWARD ..

An old woman. 2 biggest attractions then were the bottle house and on weekends they had a look a like Roy Rogers horse that did tricks. No tour train. All they are saying is BS.
