He had Wolsey researching French princesses and daughters of the Nobles for him to marry once he secured an annulment or divorce. A French royal marriage would bring England diplomatic and wealth advantages .....and Wolsey was diligent in his task which he was working secretly on during a diplomatic visit to France. When he returned he was astonished to find the king chasing after Anne Boleyn, an English woman and a commoner. Anne herself, very early on when the king began courting her, tried to shun him. She actually wrote him a letter reminding him he was a married man and that she believed he was mocking her lowly status. She also told him that she did not wish to provoke the displeasure "of the good Queen Katherine". She returned the kings gifts and withdrew to Hever, hoping the king would lose interest in her. At this time she was hoping to make an honourable marriage and having an affair with a king would ruin her chances - she had learned from her sister Mary's behaviour what not to do. However the great royal stalker was not going to allow her to escape and began finding excuses to visit Hever. He sent her a stag he had hunted himself to remind her of the hunter....and that she, Anne, would not escape the hunt either - the symbolism would not have been lost on Anne...... Add to that the poem about Anne by Wyatt, about how many hunters were after Anne, the king leading the pack...he said "While I kindly am served, I'd like to know what she has deserved".. He knew there was to be no escape for Anne no matter what she did, and how her entire family might be punished if she did not yield herself eventually......
It’s interesting to see the pro-and con-Anne comments below. Anne, being human, was not perfect, but was certainly interesting. A friend of mine recently said that she was of “no importance” historically, but I completely disagree!
I disagree as well. It was because of her that the Church of England was established and the Rome Catholic Church lost power in England. Through her England received one of the most powerful monarchs Elizabeth. Her life was pivotal in the future of England and America since those coming to America were looking for freedom of religion.
I agree with both of you the impact of Anne is perhaps more than any of the other wives because of Elizabeth (her daughter) and all of the change that she brought. Anne made a huge impact and I have always been so impressed and so intrigued by her life

The embroidered bed valances and coif were a couple and learning that they used ear wax for embroidery is weirdly interesting 🤔 (eeewwww!!). Although I would love to visit Hever some day, it is probably unlikely and videos like these make it possible to experience Hever from afar.

I readily acknowledge that she was a person very much ahead of her time in terms of upbringing and intellect. However, I cannot get past the fact that she treated Queen Catherine and Princess Mary with incredible vitriol. She was a willing participant in breaking the spirits of these two innocent people. While she may not have instigated everything that Henry brought about, she very much was involved in the torment that these women were put through for many years. It is tragic that a person is set aside and treated so badly simply because she could not produce a male. Anne's treatment of Catherine and Mary is unforgivable.

Catherine and Mary were treated horribly and Anne was party to that. I would like to know where a particular portrait of Anne can be viewed. It's the portrait shown when the narrator is speaking about the William Tindale Bible being left open on a lecturn in Anne's chamber and the portrait is briefly shown. I have never seen it before and it caught my attention.
All paintings are not contemporary of her. They're all artistic interpretation but one thing is for sure, she must have been special and a beautiful character with her French education. If not there would not have been that much spite to erase her image.
I felt a very strong presence of Anne Boylene when I visit the chapel in the grounds of the Tower of London. Many years later I learnt that her remains lie beneath the alter. I feel she was innocent when she was beheaded there was great sorrow but is there no record that she was given a descent funeral ?

I'm constantly astonished in this video and others to see these important antique books handled without white gloves. Having visited two rare book libraries for research purposes here in New York where white gloves were mandatory, I can't believe they allow these books to be handled in such a way that will deposit the oils from finger tips on these ancient pages!!

I am aware that some institutions still require the wearing of gloves in their archives, however as someone who spends much of my time with these kind of documents, I have to say I cringe when I see people handling them with gloves on. For many years now, the industry standard has been for clean dry hands, which are considerably preferable for handling such documents than gloves. White cotton gloves completely deaden the senses in your fingertips which are vital to prevent tearing documents. You are far more likely to do damage with gloves on than with thoroughly clean, dry hands. Every bit of research tells us this.

It doesn't take that much foresight too see this could get dangerous for her whole family name and possessions if she rejected or humiliated him. Greedy relatives encouraging her to comply with his desires ? Or was she an independent thinking but imprudent woman who thought she could parry with a powerful bastardly brutal King ? Incidentally she seemed to have adopted radical progressive religious views and i see that linking with her imprudent accepting courtship with the married King. From my experience beautiful women tend to be cruel and capable of cold cruel acts. A bad combination with an unstable and highly susceptible bastard King. The public opinion is merciless and must have been so with Henri 8 after she miscarried. And one can imagine Henri's political enemies humiliating and mocking him. Add to that her independent thinking and her popularity with men (just like Henri fell for her, a woman like that must have attracted and therefore broken many hearts) and the tragedy of her brutal undeserved sentencing takes shape.

Anne boleyn was the ultimate home wrecker. I am a big fan of Catherine of Aragon. When Catherine died Anne actually held a party! She greatly influenced Henry on the cruel mistreatment and neglect of Mary Tudor, insisting that Mary be a servant of the toddler Elizabeth.
Catherine never was cruel to anyone ever. Anne was quite cruel to Catherine. Their characters were profoundly different...with Anne's decidedly lacking.

Whatever did she do to deserve his inveterate hatred of everybody after her fall? The way she stepped on the Spanish queen and her powerful daughter Mary? The split. With Catholicism? Elizabeth or her contemporaries never tried to disculpate her or absolve her and she remained buried in the basement of a prison chapel. In the early '800 her image was partly improved in Anna Bolena opera by Donizetti...

No doubt a cut throat business in those days where poisoning was another method. I agree about one thing with you though, she was first admired for those qualities but was probably imprudent and unwise to not see where was leading her in England. While she may not have instigated everything that Henry brought about, she very much was involved in the torment that these women were put through for many years. It is tragic that a person is set aside and treated so badly simply because she could not produce a male. Anne's treatment of Catherine and Mary is unforgivable.

@@dontstart8440 I have. Volumes and volumes. I have spent my adult life studying this period. I avoid 'propaganda '. When you strip it down to the bare facts, the truth is inescapable. Catherine and Mary were treated horribly and Anne was party to that. She may have not been the mastermind but she knew what was happening and (in the most sympathetic analysis towards Anne) did nothing. Imagine not being with your only child while on your deathbed. Nothing admirable about that.
@@dontstart8440 I will say I absolutely believe Anne was innocent of the charges she died for. That much seems very clear. It can be true that 1) she was horribly executed for a crime she did not commit and 2) she participated in the abuse of Catherine and Mary.

One can never be completely sure about what really happened in Anne Boleyn's life, but I think it's a great pity if it is true that she treated Catherine of Aragon and her daughter Mary very badly.

I would like to know where a particular portrait of Anne can be viewed. It's the portrait shown when the narrator is speaking about the William Tindale Bible being left open on a lecturn in Anne's chamber and the portrait is briefly shown. I have never seen it before and it caught my attention.
All paintings are not contemporary of her. They're all artistic interpretation but one thing is for sure, she must have been special and a beautiful character with her French education. If not there would not have been that much spite to erase her image.

I felt a very strong presence of Anne Boylene when I visit the chapel in the grounds of the Tower of London.
Many years later I learnt that her remains lie beneath the alter.
I feel she was innocent when she was beheaded there was great sorrow but is there no record that she was given a descent funeral ?

Norris, Weston, Brereton, Smeaton and Rochford were innocent victims of the most appalling brutality and are deserving of our attention. I'm constantly astonished in this video and others to see these important antique books handled without white gloves. Having visited two rare book libraries for research purposes here in New York where white gloves were mandatory, I can't believe they allow these books to be handled in such a way that will deposit the oils from finger tips on these ancient pages!!

I am aware that some institutions still require the wearing of gloves in their archives, however as someone who spends much of my time with these kind of documents, I have to say I cringe when I see people handling them with gloves on. For many years now, the industry standard has been for clean dry hands, which are considerably preferable for handling such documents than gloves. White cotton gloves completely deaden the senses in your fingertips which are vital to prevent tearing documents. You are far more likely to do damage with gloves on than with thoroughly clean, dry hands. Every bit of research tells us this.
Same here. I would think ungroved hands would leave traces oils behind that would hurt the paper...

Her family should have moved her out of England to France when it became clear the King was getting obsessed with her and that it was not reciprocal. It doesn't take that much foresight too see this could get dangerous for her whole family name and possessions if she rejected or humiliated him. Greedy relatives encouraging her to comply with his desires ? Or was she an independent thinking but imprudent woman who thought she could parry with a powerful bastardly brutal King ? Incidentally she seemed to have adopted radical progressive religious views and i see that linking with her imprudent accepting courtship with the married King.
From my experience beautiful women tend to be cruel and capable of cold cruel acts. A bad combination with an unstable and highly susceptible bastard King. The public opinion is merciless and must have been so with Henri 8 after she miscarried. And one can imagine Henri's political enemies humiliating and mocking him. Add to that her independent thinking and her popularity with men (just like Henri fell for her, a woman like that must have attracted and therefore broken many hearts) and the tragedy of her brutal undeserved sentencing takes shape.

She was a free thinker and intelligent, something court ladies in England lacked, so it is very plausible that she raised jealousy and spite due to the cultural difference and that lead to defaming her character just as you did.
No doubt a cut throat business in those days where poisoning was another method. I agree about one thing with you though, she was first admired for those qualities but was probably imprudent and unwise to not see where was leading her in England.
