    My guess is that this is going to be a neiche product, but a secret weapon for voice actors. Tone controll allows you to be incredibly expressive without proximity effect ruining the take, and specs ressembling the lct440 are more than usable in professional recordings so long as you arent particularly siblant

      Just watch how expressive you are...lol...it bit me a couple times while talking with my hands

      As well as gamers moving around or getting animated while playing their games. The auto proximity will help.

      Huh. As a VO artist myself, this feature would drive me crazy. I like having the proximity effect in my performance toolbox. And proximity effect ain't what it used to be - most modern mics have done a pretty job at taming it, and careful placement of a pop filter can deal with the rest of it, if you really want to eliminate the possibility of it happening. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    I am an individual who does online business coaching and I attend board meetings remotely .... This is exactly what I have been looking for ... to me, as a coach or board member, having a microphone stuck to my face is completely unprofessional. I think I got the first RAY my vendor sent out the door. It works great ... I can move around and sound fantastic. I use it with a RodeX StreamerX and it works great and sounds better than my USB mic (and I can move) ... and most important to me is it is not in view of my audience. Oh, unrelated but, I like your reviews ... you are one of my go to people when I have an issue. Oh, and I use Unify to get the settings just the way i like it.

    I've seen several reviews of the Lewitt Ray. This is by far the best I've seen. Part of that is because you discuss real world recording situations that might go sideways and how to ensure they don't. For me, the bright treble boost takes the mic off the table as a potential buy, but for those who need or don't mind the filter curve of this mic, it's a worthy purchase at a fair price. Nicely done.

      Thanks!!
      Yeah...it is bright...a good EQ can fix that...but I know that isnt always in the cards.
      Cheers!

    To me, the 440 sounded like it had more low end sound, a fuller sound. I liked the 440 sounded better but the auto gain feature is really nice.

    I picked up this mic a few days ago and used it in a podcast. I really thought the tech would be great for podcasting. However, reality is a buzz kill.
    The first and worst problem with the Aura tech is that it changes the tone of the microphone and makes it sound cheap. It sounds nothing like a 440 Pure with the Aura tech turned on. But is indistinguishable from the 440 when the tech is turned off. Plus, I found it difficult to EQ well with the Aura tech. It greatly diminished what is best about the 440.
    That said, there was the auto mute. Unfortunately, it also failed me when I needed it. My desk chair has a tall back and with the mute set to the third rung of the ladder, I could barely back up enough to trigger it. The second rung would have activated it and would have kept me too close to the mic. I had one coughing spasm during the show and leaned well to the side. But the proximity of the mic to the chair kept the mic active so that it never muted.
    You can always turn off the Aura tech and just use the mute manually. But if you suddenly need to cough, reaching up and squeezing that switch in time and in a way that does not create worse noise than the cough is not an easy matter.
    This means that in practice, at least for me, I am better off rocking the 440 Pure: a mic with almost no downside. It might well be the best mic for under $300. Presently, I am rocking my TLM 102 on mic stand one and will likely return the RAY. If you want a second 440, just get a second 440. The RAY is not quite that.

    I would put my $60 over the selection of SLT440 instead to be right there when I want to use that Aura feature. Who else?

  • @McAntonio
    @McAntonio 7 місяців тому

    I could use it as a talk back mic, when tracking someone I wonder if a pop filter would interfere with the signal.

    In a non-expert (in fact a newbie to audio.) What strikes me about the Ray (apart from I want one) is just how close the price is to the existing LTC440. Maybe the old LTC440 is not long for this world?

    All Lewitt Mic capsules are good quality though some are 3 Micron Mylar but those backplates of capsules are optimised to work with 3 Micron Mylar... so you can expect 6 micron Mylar sound quality from their capsules.

    They need this tech in a hanheld preferably a condensor .

      Newb here, why is a condenser better?

    • @blbecblby226
      @blbecblby226 4 місяці тому

      @@DonAmos_storiesit isnt necessesarily better. It depends on use. Condensers are usualy more detailed and sensitive, which is great, but can lead to feedback more often, they can also usually handle lower volume than dynamic mics. Dynamic mics are usually more durable, because the technology behind creating the signal, which is then decoded as sound doesnt need as fragile parts. Condensers have more fragile parts inside, so they are less durable usually. It is also said, that condensers are more prone to pick up a room noise, which isn't totally true, it is very simplified

    Having spent decades developing a technique I'm not sure I'd be able to figure out how best to use it in the narration situation, like when I'm turning away for a shouty bit or trying to get dynamics from side or off. But I think it's pretty nifty and definitely worthy of consideration. Great for podcasters I'd guess. 👍👍👍

    • @DarkCornerStudios
      @DarkCornerStudios  8 місяців тому

      Yeah if you use dynamics on a mic this is useless...
      Not really a performance mic.

    • @gwgw77
      @gwgw77 8 місяців тому +2

      In such a case "Aura" function should be left in it's "off" position . Nothing can get close to mimic or "help" someone who has the "Technique" . You just have to capture flawlessly the performance ... then enjoy what a true professional can bring to the table.

    You said the big brands "are always going to be safe in the professional spaces" - I'm not so sure about that. I see a lot of artists on stage nowadays with sE Electronics microphones, so even the pro sector isn't safe from new upcoming brands with a chinese background.

    Waiting for the microphone tech that auto mutes when a person decides it’s okay to do a video meeting whilst using the toilet! I suppose someone could use the mute feature to turn on as you rock back in your seat to do the business.

    In almost every sector of tech nowadays the buzz word is AI. Since we are on the topic of innovation in audio recording, do you think the industry will also ride the wave of AI and if so in what capacity would the new technology be implemented? It is fun to speculate on how meaningful would AI be to the industry in ways other than boosting stock prices. 🤔
