    Thank you for uploading the failed attempts. I’ve given up crafts for a long time because I failed every time I tried making something. I am always envy (in a positive manner) with people who have “magic hands” that can create pretty things, that’s why I often watch your videos not to learn but to see people doing the things I can’t, sooo satisfying. But the way you gave it a second chance after the first one failed make me believe that it’s not just magic hands doing the trick, you guys also have the patience and the will to experiment and learn from the process. I was way less of a “it’s easy for you bc you’re born with it” person

      I also have to remind myself that we watch edited videos.... everything is meant to look seamless, flawless because it's pleasing to the eye and mind (to be clear the artists are not trying to deceive us ) but everyone fails sometimes. Don't give up after a few failures if this is something your heart wants to do. You get better with practice.

      I hope you don’t complain you fail every time! Please think to yourself “why did it fail?” Observe the possibilities then fix the mistake and learn

      You aren’t born with talent.
      It’s also just like in art with drawing, you aren’t automatically able to whip up the Mona Lisa when you don’t have any experience with art at all. It takes practice to get there

    The biggest thing I would say is that shrink plastic will always warp a bit, so do your best to stay away from shapes with too many sharp edges. Square or rectangular shapes show that warping a lot more than something more rounded. Also boarders are your friend. Leaving a bit of plastic around the edges of things always helps things look more finished in my experience (helps hide the warping). Try not to make pieces too thin. The borders of the claw machine were pretty thin so they didn't want to hold in the right shape. Try to color as solidly as you can when it comes to color pencil. The gaps in the color become pretty apparent once things are shrunk. Thicker materials like posca you want to be careful not to get things too thick as you can sometimes see the paint bunch up after shrinking. Those are all the tips I have I think...
    Overall these turned out great! don't sell yourself short! You really didn't do anything wrong with the claw machine! shrink plastic just tends to do that with square pieces.
    Oh! Also if you do get an oven, I would advise against doing more than one at a time anyway. Because it tends to curl up and then flatten back out, pieces will sometimes run into each other and get stuck so it's best to do things one at a time.

      I actually really love the aesthetic of the colored pencil with the gaps even in the shrunk version - it‘s really cute to see those lines and the handmade look. But asides from that, thank you for your tips, I‘m sure they‘ll be helpful when I try out shrink plastic somewhen in the future 😊

      hi! this was really helpful, thank you! May I ask if there’s a difference between the heat gun and an oven when shrinking?

      @Noodlesoup1819 2 місяці тому +2

      @@crystalraine I've never used a heat gun to shrink my plastic before, but if I had to make a guess it'd be the how even the heating is. An oven has heat sources all around the plastic, so I'd assume it would heat the plastic more evenly than a heat gun that you have to be careful to move around to heat the whole piece. That's just my guess, but I hope it helps!

    I used to make a lot of shrink plastic charms and I found on larger ones if you sandwich them between 2 pieces of brown paper bags cut to size in the toaster oven while they're cooking they don't have the ability to curl in on themselves and they come out flatter. My suggestion is to sandwich the piece in between the paper bag and hold it on the edges maybe with push pins on a cork board while you heat it. It allows the piece to heat enough to shrink but doesn't allow it to "move" very much while heating. Just be sure to not over heat in any specific spot for too long of you can scorch the bag!

  • @elliesrose
    @elliesrose 3 місяці тому +14

    i have some tips for if it turns out wavy -
    just apply more heat until it turns soft again, then flatten it out fast. (i used an oven though so i hope that works on a heatgun)
    also, if you're using colored pencil, make sure to coloring all the area fully! ( think the posca markers or colored pencils are the best for plastic keychains
    and if you want the back to look the same as the front (idk if you do though) make sure to add details that usually go on top first then go over them after you've colored over/around it
    anyway, yours turned out so amazing and i loved watching!! (the shaker idea is so cool :0) and the pudding and oranges are aaah soo cute!

    These are so cute ❤ A big tip is shrink plastic has a direction where it shrinks a bit more than the other directions!! Most people don't seem to know this. It helps to make a square "ruler" with even spacing on the X and Y axis and watch how it shrinks. An oven would definitely help with nicer more uniform shrinking, maybe you can ask a friend if you can come over to do this? A small toaster oven will also work as long as you can change the temperature a little bit or only do smaller pieces

  • @butter2765
    @butter2765 2 місяці тому

    You did pretty good for your second try with shrink plastic:
    I would recommend trying to keep your pencils sharp when coloring and if coloring with pastels adding a color on the other side or theyll be too translucent
    Long shapes, especially square ones- id recommend moving your heat gun along the side youre shrinking so the heat is even. The warping is because of the uneven heating. Putting it along a baking tin also distributes evenly but can get very hot, so be careful.
    Oh a tip for to keep them from curling- i usually put the shrink plastic between two pieces of baking paper so the shiny end doesnt stick.
    I'd like to add the shaker is so cute even if you werent satisfied with the results
    If you do happen to have access to a used appliance store, would recommend getting a small oven made for toast and small foods- it is very hard to get big pieces not to warp without having even heating

    🎉 I enjoyed this video so much. I do play with shrink plastic and I was curious how you would shrink without an oven. The big pieces need an even distribution of heat so they don’t get wavy - using the tape roll was a FABULOUS idea. Everything turned out so adorable. I never thought of creating a shaker charm that way and I am now inspired. I felt so bad for your hand though! I recommend posca pens for large surfaces so you have a smoother finish and minimal layers are key - you can also use sharpies. ❤ I look forward to what you make next!

    These are super cute and turned out great. For a first try I'm impressed! 🥰 I have no experience making these and the fact that turned out actually looking like the objects you wanted them to be is successful in my book.
    All you can do is keep practicing to improve your process.
    Do you need to be in a ventilated room when shrinking? Does the plastic cause toxic fumes?

  • @kaos.karlos

    The keychains turned out really cute! And I am very grateful that you uploaded the video and showed us your failed attempt of the claw machine shaker - it‘s always a learning curve with arts and crafts (not only, but especially when you try a new medium). Videos like yours are authentic and show that it needs patience and persistence to make something new. But even then, it might fail - but that gives you new insights and you learn something from it. I really enjoy this authentic mix of success and fails (and am rather discouraged if I watch too much too curated content where nothing ever goes wrong).
    All in all, please don‘t be so hard on yourself, because all the other keychains really turned out gorgeous! ❤

    I ran into the same problem making double layer shrink film charms like that. Even using the oven, each piece shrinks a little different, and I think that goes especially so for skinny edges. I haven’t figured out an answer for it yet, but I’m sure it’s just a matter of trial and error. Anyway good luck!

    Had no idea you could use a heat gun on shrink plastic! What a cool idea. And thank you for telling us about the mask for the resin. I’ve been wanting to try uv resin on a few things but have asthma, so this is a big plus to know this. No worries on the ones that didn’t work out the way you wanted, too many videos show the successes but not what it took to get there. This is how we learn and when we see too many that “seem easy” and come out “perfect” we think we can do it on the first try. Gotta trust the process! 🩷🩷🩷
