- In this video, Caleb and myself were sent to winch out a spreader truck that was stuck . The farmer already tried to pull it out with 2 tractors.The spreader truck weighed around 42,000 lbs. Mr. Hal, I know that you already know this, being raised on a farm, but that is the misconception that people have about a tractor. Though it's big and powerful and heavy, it's claim to fame is it's light footprint in pounds to the square foot on the ground. Given that light ground load when attempting to pull an object that is effectively chocked by more square feet of ground, the pulling tractor has to break free and move a vehicle that in theory weighs more than the pulling tractor. And in this instance if the gross of the pulled vehicle was 42,000, by the time you distribute that to the half depth that at least three of the tires were sunk to, the John Deere didn't stand a chance.
The wrecker on the other hand with it's weight and the advantages of the pulling force applied to the frame of the vehicle, opposed to the wheels applying that force to the ground, makes the wrecker superior to an almost equally heavy tractor. The only exception that I could think of would be a log skidder, which by design, like the wrecker, is born to pull.
